And that last is the point that needs emphasis for this group. All the fire sale jacks had minimum height of over 5". That might just work for a stock M3 (I forget) but isn't low enough for a lowered car. Neil 96 M3

#3. steering wheel wraps(?) - from marc@plante.com

Date: Wed, 08 May 2002 07:24:33 -0700 (PDT) From: marc@plante.com Subject: steering wheel wraps(?) My car's wheel is getting a little worn at 3 and 9. Wondering what luck people have had with rewrapping their wheels. Thinking the options include cutting off the old wrap and putting a new one on, or parhaps putting a new one over the old one, providing a thicker wheel to grab. Has anyone had particular luck with a specific brand/supplier of wheel wraps? I'd rather not use the fur from Trak Auto... Marc Plante E36 325i, 198k Vienna, VA

#4. Fuel gauge; fuel senders; resetting oh my! - from Msebmwman@aol.com

Date: Wed, 08 May 2002 10:20:47 -0400 From: Msebmwman@aol.com Subject: Fuel gauge; fuel senders; resetting oh my! All; I've switched to a different e-mail address to decrease traffic on my business e-mail. Yeah, it's AOL. I thought that there might be a few folks that would benefit from this. Because of a relatively short commute I fill up about once every 3 weeks. Usually fill up with about 2-4 gallons left in the tank. About half the time my fuel gauge does not go back to full after filling. It stays at its previous indication prior to filling. I have replaced one of the senders in the tank and that didn't seem to do the trick. However, what I do these days is that when I get home or at the next opportunity I pull fuse number 31 (front left on my car) for about 10 seconds, put it back in, and the gauge is reset where it should be at full. I don't know what the reasons are that it does this. But, this is relatively simple and cheap. Thanks, Marc 95M3 regular with 45 K miles(this is the one with the fuel gauge problem) 95M3LTW 33K miles(this one doesn't have the fuel gauge problem

#5. Rob Knob Magnum FS - from marc@plante.com

Date: Wed, 08 May 2002 07:31:46 -0700 (PDT) From: marc@plante.com Subject: Rob Knob Magnum FS Well...I tried one of the Rob Knob Mugnums when rob had his "defect" sale a few weeks back. Brushed aluminum, there's *sort* of a little scratch if you really look hard. The scratch really isn't that big of a deal, so if you have to ask... It has a 6 speed insert installed, though there's also a 5 speed insert included you can install. Need to pry out the 6 speed and install the 5 speed (peel-off glue thingie). It's too big for my taste. To be a decent guy and not capitalize on Rob's sale, I'll part with it for $45 plus shipping, which is basically my cost plus a couple bucks to cover the trouble of getting it back to the post office. Z3 share the same > 3-spoke wheel, can someone else comment on the airbag similarity? You must get the airbag from a 98-99 M Roadster, 99 M Coupe, or late-98/99 M3 coupe or 99-or-earlier Z3. Starting in the fall of 99, the E36 chassis went to the Smart (dual-threshold) airbags which have dual inflators. Thus, you can't use the '00+ MY airbags. Personally, I have had very good results from the "wheelskins" brand of leather steering wheel wraps. It all comes down to installation. If you are patient and take the time to do it right, they look nice. If you rush through it, it will look like Hell. I got mine from Kragen Auto, I think, but Bavarian Auto also carries them in more colors. They may even have their own website, I don't know. Date: Wed, 08 May 2002 10:41:33 -0500 From: "slafredo" <slafredo@fast.net> Subject: Re: Jacking the car... was:Smoking deals on AC jacks I recently discovered this site. I thought it might interest all of the track junkies and those looking to outfit their garages. Since all of this stuff is designed to organize stuff track trailers, I think it is also perfect to organize stuff in my small one car garage. http://www.pitpal.com/ Now to my point. Jacking up a lowered car is a PITA. I have been driving up on my Tru-cut upside down ramp extensions (plastic) to gain some height but after finding this site, I have decided to purchase a set of ramps. http://www.pitpal.com/ramps.html I just spoke w/the company. The vertical storage rack will hold both the pit and assist ramps. The assist ramps are heavy duty and designed to hold the car for longer periods of time. The pit ramps are light weight and designed to lift the car to gain access for jacking. They are not designed to leave the car on the ramps for extended periods of time. That said the company said it would be OK to leave the car on the pit ramps while changing the oil. I'm still trying to decide which ramp would be best for me. I like the idea of the light weight but for $10 bucks why not get the stronger ramps. BTW, the pit ramps have an handle and the assist ramps do not. Enjoy.
