#2. Somethings burning...!? - from Chris

Date: Thu, 9 May 2002 15:20:30 -0700 From: "Chris" <ccurry@curry.org> Subject: Somethings burning...!? Although I have little experience as an auto mechanic, I am quite sure that the smell of something burning is not a good one. For about a week now I have noticed this burning smell upon exiting my car. The first few times were after I had driven the car relatively aggressively. At first I attributed it to the exhaust, then the oil (which I checked and it is perfect), and now I am quite unsure and expect the worst. Or perhaps this is normal in the heat of the nearing summer? Any suggestions? I need this car to get around! Thanks, Chris '95 Black/Black M3 and still looking for M3ers in the Bay Area so I can hear different exhausts

(you know, the one you get when you forget to tighten the gas cap) I've checked the cap and reset the light, and even borrowed a buddy's gas cap. CE light only seems to come on during extended idle periods (stuck in traffic, etc). Based on Al and Kit's recommendation I'll be checking the 'lumpy thang' under the spare, but just wondering if anyone else has experienced something like this. One broke when I did the replacement. They are only about $5 each I think. You say that you have new clips, so maybe you already have them. The only other thing to watch out for is to remember to remove the rubber bumpers off the old radiator and put them on the new one. Otherwise, you will get to install your radiator twice...like me :-) Fortunately it is a very straightforward task to change the radiator. Almost like they *knew* that it would fail at regular 60,000 mile intervals. The whole job takes about an hour. Certainly no more than two. Have you been driving on any different roads and possible picked up some debris? When my car's nice and dirty, it often emits some odd odors, but it's generally just road grime and dirt that's caked up on the exhuast can. What's it smell like? ;) I'm sure if you can describe the smell to some degree, someone with good olfactory experience can help you diagnose it. Is it coming from any particular area (inside, outside, front, rear)?
