#1. Timing Chain Tensioner noise? - from Gary A. Preece

Reid said: For as long as I've had my 95 M3 (60k miles) (about 1 year), I've noticed a deceleration noise coming from the car. <snip> Reid, That is the noise that I started with on my 95 M3 at about 70K, now with 90K on it. I took off the cam cover the other day to take a look after replacing the primary chain tensioner to no avail. What I found was the sprockets on the secondary chain look very worn because the teeth looked very sharp on the passenger side one and somewhat sharp on the other. The back sprocket on the primary chain looked much different (the ends of the teeth were flat on top). Also, the secondary chain tensioner seemed to have very good tension. I think the VANOS is the thing at the end of the cam? I may replace it as well as the worn looking sprockets and chain. Anyone help me out here? I plan to take mine to Don Black here in Louisville, KY next week or so and see what we can find out. I will report what I find out. Gary Preece

I've had several people tell me it's probably VANOS.. but the message from Mr. Conforti on the bmw-m.net website says ALL VANOS units make noise, but some some owners are more sensitive than others.. Whenever I hear of owners replacing their VANOS, though, they talk about a "marbles in a jar" sound @ idle coming from under the front cam cover.. but on my car, I can rev the engine while staring at the engine and I hear no obvious noise coming from that area. Weird. It seems to me if it's VANOS I should hear noise coming from there. How about yours? Crack the hood, stick your head under there, and manipulate the throttle with your hand.. any weird nose from the engine? I hear a tiny nosie that sounds like it's coming from the fan, but.. hrm. - reid > Reid, > > That is the noise that I started with on my 95 M3 at about 70K, now with 90K > on it. #3. Bay Area M3 Organization - from Chris

Date: Sat, 11 May 2002 22:38:16 -0700 From: "Chris" <ccurry@curry.org> Subject: Bay Area M3 Organization ? I saw 6 M3 in the 2 hours I was driving around my small town of Pleasanton today, yet I hear very little of Bay Area M3 meets except for those at Thunderhill and Sears point. Is there any Bay Area Organization? Or will I find out when I get my CCA membership...? Thanks, Chris BTW, as for exhaust... I'm thinking, since I'm not looking for the hp increase and I have limited funds, maybe I'll rip the exhaust apart, pull out some of the stuffing, add some of my own that will absorb high frequency sound, and sew it back up. Not sure how it will sound.. but I'm guessing higher volume, more rumble, less high pitch whine.

Pedal > feels > fine but have yet to test drive.... > Shel, Yes there are two circuits, but I think it operates on the diagonal (RF/LR and LF/RR), not left side / right side. This is for braking stability in case of brake system failure. I might be wrong. Bob Gill 97 ///M3 coupe Philly Region SCCA AS Champion 1997 & 2000 BSP Champion 2001 Shel, you didn't say what model year your M3 is. The '95 M3 is different from the '96+ models. The '95 is a 3-station ABS whereas the '96+ is 4-station. What this means is on the '95 M3 there is just one brake line running from the ABS unit to the rear of the car. The line splits just ahead of the differential and goes to each rear wheel. Therefore, bleeding either rear wheel (doesn't matter which one) basically bleeds both rear wheels at once. You just have to bleed a very small amount of brake fluid from the other rear wheel to get the fluid from in the line from the differential to the wheel. The '96+ models do have two separate lines running to the rear. One for each rear wheel so it will require more bleeding to get all the old fluid out of the lines. Bob is sort of right. I won't say wrong. :) Federal law has required all cars in the US to have 2 chambers in the Master Brake Cylinder since the 1960's. And I am sure most cars were using 2 chambers before the Federal law. Why? Because if any one of your brake lines broke or somehow got severed or any of your wheel cylinders failed, you would quickly lose ALL of your brake fluid and hence lose ALL of your brakes. Not a good thing. Therefore, carmakers split the Master Brake Cylinder into 2 chambers. Each chamber for 2 wheels. Therefore, if a brake line breaks, you only lose brakes to two wheels. Chances are you won't rupture two break lines at once. Now the question is how do you split up the brakes? Maybe put the front brakes on one chamber and the rear brakes on the other chamber? Nope. Very bad idea. You cannot stop a car in a safe distance without at least one front brake working. Whatever you do, you don't want to lose both front brakes at once. So how about putting the left side brakes on one chamber and the right side on the other? Nope. Not a good idea either. If you just have one side brakes working, your car will violently try to spin. It will be very hard to control. Not good. Bob is right. Brakes are split up LF/RR - RF/LR for both safety and stability reasons. What I can't figure out is why common "wives tale" recommends bleeding brakes in order RR, LR, RF, LF. I don't see any good engineering reason for this methodology. The common "reason" is you start with the wheel farthest from the Master Brake Cylinder and work in. Why? I just explained brakes are split up diagonally. Ostensibly, you want to thoroughly bleed each chamber in the master cylinder. To do that, you would want to do one chamber first, then the other. The way to do that would be start with either rear wheel (doesn't matter) and then bleed the front diagonal wheel. Then do the other rear wheel and other diagonal front wheel. Oh well. I don't suppose it does any harm to bleed brakes the "common" way. Lowell Seaton '95 M3 BMW CCA #131505 Dallas, Texas

#6. WTB: tire(s) - from Carguymb@aol.com
Top
Date: Sun, 12 May 2002 16:52:09 EDT From: Carguymb@aol.com Subject: WTB: tire(s) Picked up a screw in a tire the other day. Unfortunately, it's close to the oustide edge, so I really should replace the tire (unfortunately, the spare already has a similar plug/patch). The tires are the NLA Michelin Pilot SX MXX3 235/40-17, and the rears are still in good condition, so I'd like to find one (or two, since the other front tire already has a patch) matching tires, so that I can avoid mixing types or brands. Does anybody have one or two of these tires they're looking to sell. Prefer 50% or greater tread left, in good condition, with no patches, plugs or other damage. Philly area ideal, but I'll pay reasonable shipping, too. Martin Bullen '95 M3 '97 Z3 2.8

Major options are: OBC, Harmon Kardon stereo W/6 disc changer, power front seats, power sunroof, cruise, keyless entry, and M contour wheels Safety: Traction control with LSD, air bags including front side air bags. All inspections have been done by BMW and the oil (Mobil 1) and filter has been changed every 3000 miles. Fuel filter and spark plugs were changed at 35,000. Transmission and rear dif fluids changed every 6 months with Mobil one fluids. I get 28mpg on the freeway at 75mph no problem. Best ever was 32mpg!!! I had an Eastern Motorwerks gauge pak professionally installed that has oil temp/pressure/volt meter which is where the sunglass holder was. Also had the 320 tranny mount bushings installed and the M3 convert. X brace installed. I just had new Bridgestone SO3 tires and Borbet type R wheels put on at 40,000 miles. I also have the orginal M contour wheels, and the original Dunlop 9000 tires installed on Millie Miglia MM 2 sports. So that is 3 sets of wheels included!!! The car was pictured in an article on the history of ///M in Grassroots Motorsports April 2001 issue. My car is actually shown with the BMW M brand manager and Hans stuck along with all the M cars ever made. Great article for sure. I am also quoted at the end of the write-up when they announced the best M car ever built was the E36 M3!!! The windshield was just replaced at 39K from getting chipped by a rock. I drive the car to work everyday on the freeway. Most miles were put on vacations and road trips. We went to Florida twice, once to Texas, 3 times to Michigan, and once to Chicago. Also I drive a lot between Louisville and Atlanta for my job. So most is freeway miles. The car runs great and is a blast to drive. I have never had any major problems other than a faulty fuel gauge with a mind of its own (common on E36) and the gearshift light went out, which all were fixed under warranty. The service has been excellent and the car rock solid. All service records can be obtained from the BMW dealer. I am asking $28,900 OBO. Car is located just outside Louisville KY.
