#1. suspension question - from RacerxJLing@aol.com

Date: Wed, 15 May 2002 23:01:55 EDT From: RacerxJLing@aol.com Subject: suspension question First check the condition of the tires. Consider rebalancing the wheels first (cheapest option). When they have the wheels off, take a look at the front suspension bushings including the control arm and leakage for worn shocks. First, call the hitter's insurance and ask them how they want to handle it, assuming your hitter told them about it. If the hitter's insurance plays dumb, you may have a problem, unless you have witnesses or unless the hitter admits fault to her insurance. Assuming all above goes well, if they instruct you to get three estimates, go to the three highest class body shops around. But in all likelihood her insurance will want you to let their own estimator look at it and write up an offer to settle. If you don't like their estimate, then its time to tell them you are having neck pains and see if they will recommend a doctor for you to go see! They will then try to get you to sign a release and write you a check. Don't sign anything if you are not satisfied with the offer. If at any time they ask you if anyone was injured, hedge a bit about your sore neck! BTW, its entirely possible the damage is more serious than you think if there are some misalignments for surrounding bodywork. Good luck! (Within the | last 3 weeks) | | Last night while leaving south coast plaza, while sitting at a red | light, a older woman in a Honda accord bumped me from behind. The | damage looks to be 3 or 4 - 6 inch long gashes along my back bumper, | along with the paint appearing to spider out from the point of impact. | (Kinda chipping/flaking around the area) | | We exchanged information, and went on our way. The woman stated "Sorry, | I was day dreaming". Sigh ;( | | When I got home, upon further inspection, it appears the black molding | around the bumper seems to be mis aligned now - with a 3 inch gap where | it should be lining up. Anyone have any idea of what kinda damage I'm | describing here pricewise? What are other common problems I should be | sure to check out from this kind of smaller rear impact? | | I'm thinking of taking the car to Irvine bmw to get an estimate of the | damage and repairs. Anyone have any suggestions? Do they usually | handle this in house? Or will they suggest somewhere else to take it? | Do I need an appointment at Irvine bmw to look over the damage, or can I | just pull in for an inspection? | | Also -- What would be my best bet in terms of insurance? I'm thinking | of giving them the option to go through insurance or pay the estimate. | does that sound reasonable? If we do go through insurance, would my | rates increase? | | Lastly, anyone have any paint/body shops they would recommend in the OC | area? I really want to get this fixed right. #5. Crank Fan Delete? - from Jeremy Lucas

Date: Thu, 16 May 2002 05:18:42 -0400 From: "Jeremy Lucas" <jlucas@columbus.rr.com> Subject: Crank Fan Delete? Morning all, I'm on the fence about deleting my viscous coupled crank driven fan and was hoping for list wisdom. Several guys in my area have done this mod on street cars will no ill effects, and PTG does it on their race cars. I know some club racers do this, but this is my street/track car. Before anyone who hasn't heard of this mod freaks out, our cars two fans: one electric pusher fan in front of the rad, the other is crank driven with a viscous coupling. Basically there is 3 options: 1) remove fan, add water wetter 2) everything in 1 but also install 80 deg C thermostat (basically a racing thermostat), and 80/88 deg C fan switch (from a 318ti) 3) everything in 2 but also install a second electric puller fan (probably a SPAL brand) Option 2 seems to be preferred is moderate climates, and option 3 is preferred in CA, AZ, TX, etc... Anybody with experience with this mod? Does the thermostat make that much of a difference? Is the SPAL needed? Jeremy Lucas 95 M3

Wes, Your concern does you credit, but unless there are meaningful facts to back it up, I'd have to take this story as just one more internet anecdote. - How does lack of a sub belt lead to head impact with the windshield? - What is known about the harness installation in this case? - What kind of car was involved? For instance the top of a P-911's windshield is much closer to the driver than that of my E36 M3. - Was this a 30 mph or a 130 mph impact? If the latter and the driver wasn't killed then maybe we should conclude that the 4 point did a wonderful job. - Was there an incident report and if so what does it say? - Never run a 4 point harness? Do you believe that a 4 point harness isn't safer than a stock lap/diagonal seatbelt in those cases where a full rollbar/5 point harness isn't a ereasonable option? What I'm seeing here is sketchy information followed by large leaps to hasty conclusions. Neil - concerned BMW instructor 96 M3

Date: Thu, 16 May 2002 11:12:20 -0400 From: "Robert Manger" <Robert_Manger@Mastercard.com> Subject: Jack point ??? Fellow listers I have the easiest question of the day. will the E46 jack pads fit on our e36's? If so is there any risk damaging something if used as a jack point. I am so sick of losing those damn hockey pucks, it drives me nuts. My local dealer charges more than $7 bucks each for the silly things. Thanks, Rob

I've been doing schools and open track events for a couple of years now. While I'll never be a Bill Auberlin, I am fast enough that hanging on to the steering wheel while sliding around under the three-point harness is getting real old. My velocities are also sufficent to warrant some concern about what could happen in the case of an agricultural excursion. So, I'd like to move to a better restraint system than the three points. But, I've seen snapshots of what E36s look like after going greasy side up, and the thought of a set of belts holding me in position and making my noggin the support point for the weight of the car doesn't please me. I've been considering the TC Kline bar (not cage). They're now being made locally. I've seen how they go in the Coupe (which is what I drive), and it looks like the center hoop is far back enough that it doesn't present a hazard for front seat occupants, particularly after judicious application of SFI approved padding. I'd probably do Aluminum racing seats at the same time. Anybody out there running this setup on the street? > Date: Thu, 16 May 2002 08:23:58 -0500 > From: Neil Maller <neil.maller@gte.net> > Subject: Re: Harnesses: 5 pt vs 4 pt > > - Never run a 4 point harness?
