My mechanic took out the OBC to replace the clock panel bulb. While doing some other work, he pushed the OBC back into place and forgot about the bulb. Lo and behold, when the car was fired up again, the clock panel was lit again! So in my case it seemed to be some sort of loose connection rather than a bulb burn-out. This was only on the clock side; the information panel on the left worked fine. I figured mine was an isolated case. - Chris

E46 M3 vs. E36 M3 track day Hey all, it was just pointed out to me that the E46 suspension is quite a bit different (and superior) to the E46. B/t the chassis, power, gearing, etc., I'm sure once the E46 guys figure out good track setups I'll be put in my place. Looks like I'll be relegated to become one of those cranky E30 types that lament the fact that BMW gave birth to the E36, and have to seriously outdrive the E46 guys to stay in the game. :) Jeff > > Neil, > Your understanding is appreciated. > > On tighter and more technical tracks, the E46///M3 is surprisingly good. > Its Achilles' heal is its stock brake pads that do bad things to the rotors > and stopping distances. > > A comparison of stock E30, E36 and E46 M3's would find an improvement in the > breed over time. Does anyone know the explanation for this? I always assumed that 5th gear (as well as 6th gear in the E46) would be an overdriven gear. Was the source that I got this information from accurate?" yup. all the BMW manual boxes I'm aware of (mostly recent ones, can't say for the E21s and what not) have a direct drive 1:1 fifth gear. The idea is, instead of an overdrive that passes through multiple gear pairs in the transmission, simply lock the input and output shaft together with zero gear reductions. This means (theoretically) you gain back a bit of drivetrain efficiency (aka MPG), and use a taller differential ratio to get the RPMs back where you like. In practice I don't think one method or the other yields a noticeable difference in mileage. But in the case of the E36M3, they stuck in a short diff for acceleration and make us live with high RPMs on the highway. I think the 6-speeds get an overdrive.

But don't forget about the automatic tranny. I know we sometimes look down our noses at the 5-speed AUTOMATIC M3. I think the auto tranny might even have 2 overdrive gears - 4th and 5th. The '96+ non-US M3's (i.e., Double VaNoS 321 hp engine) did use a 6-speed overdrive transmission. 6th gear was 0.83:1 or about 17% overdrive. But your question why? I suppose BMW designed it more for racing and/or high performance driving. Overdrive is useless for racing. 5th gear 1:1 is virtually unused unless you need to go faster than about 130 mph. 4th gear is good up to that speed. What you want for racing is close spaced gearing so you can always stay in the max powerband. You don't need super low gears nor super high gears. Just lots of gears in the middle. Some of the pure racing gearboxes even have 7 speeds, maybe more. With that said, I do wish I had an overdrive 6th gear for easy Interstate cruising. I'm always envious of these guys doing Euro 6-speed tranny conversions. Lowell Seaton '95 5-speed manual M3 Dallas, TX

The insurance company gave me the option of disposing of the car and I was wondering if anyone has any info on how best to do this. Mechanically, the engine, trans, diff, brake system, etc are all fine and only have 50K miles on them. The car was in really good shape and had Mobile 1 every 3K miles, etc. - you guys know the drill. Several body panels and interior pieces are intact as well. I am deciding on a replacement car - probably another M3 we will see... Thanks Eric

There are a series of about 4 light bulbs at the top of the OBC. Since the clock is on all the time, the one on the right hand side burns out first. They aren't very expensive. I took replaced the dead bulb with the one second from the left to get by until I could get a bulb. In 5th, it's only turning 3200 rpm at 100mph (I must have read that somewhere <g>). Donna -- 88 M3, "Guido" #41 JP 95 M3A, super-commuter/tourer * for sale * :(
