#5. USED TRANNY - from Gary A. Preece
Top
Date: Sat, 25 May 2002 17:40:58 -0400 From: "Gary A. Preece" <gapreece@entreky.net> Subject: USED TRANNY I got my used tranny the other day and am wondering if I should do anything other than install the lightweight flywheel, new clutch, pressure plate, throw-out bearing, and ??? I don't want to have to do something again. I brushed and vacuumed as much of the old clutch dust as I could and cleaned off the outside so that I can tell if anything leaks later. The tranny is supposed to have 20K miles on it, so the seal should be fine. I figured that I can always replace the slave cylinder later if it craps out down the road. Any advice? Is there any way I can tell what year it is from? It sure is bright and shiny compared to my old one. Thanks. Gary Preece 95 M3

#6. BATTERY - from Gary A. Preece

Date: Sat, 25 May 2002 18:14:51 -0400 From: "Gary A. Preece" <gapreece@entreky.net> Subject: BATTERY Hey Guys and Gals, You can tell I am giving my attention to my car today since the better half is out of town. My battery looks like the original, but a couple of cells are low and there is some seepage around the filler holes. I check it a couple of times a year and wondered if anyone had one that lasted 7 and a half years like mine. My other M3's battery croaked in 4 years which is more typical I think. The PO said that it had not been replaced. I did not see a date...is there a coded one? The car is starting fine but I don't know how much longer this will last. Has anyone gone the Dyna-Batt route in order to save 36 pounds? Thanks for any advice. Gary Preece 95 M3

Sorry, I was off bemoaning the bending of a rim. :( Hit something in the road last night about 7:30 PM, looked like a 4x4. Flatted the front right tire, and visibly bent the rim. Called AAA about the flat, called the CHP about debris in the road. AAA said that ten different cars had flats that they were servicing along that section, probably all caused by hitting the obstacle. Today, waiting for my tire installation shop to return from the holiday weekend so I can find out what they can do for the bent rim and flat S-03 PP. Any pointers to shops for straightening a bent rim? Blah. :( Jim 98 M3/2 mismatched tires. -- ICQ:27292190 mailto:jfiles@alumni.ucsd.edu (time critical? use the phone!) http://www.chezgage.com/jim/

#8. Electrical Gremlins - from Paul Elliott

Date: Sat, 25 May 2002 20:04:41 -0400 From: "Paul Elliott" <elliott.paul@worldnet.att.net> Subject: Electrical Gremlins I usually concentrate so much on performance, that I forget that mundane stuff like this can still happen, and its no fun when it does. Ok, so Ive been playing with my new clear/red taillights. They were fine for a few days, but then, the dreaded TAILLIGHT FAILURE OBC warning accompanied by a Check Engine light. At first I thought it was the new taillights, so, I tried swapping all the bulbs and sockets with my stock ones...No difference....I also noticed a very weird thing. I noticed that when I put my headlights or parking lights on, both green directional arrows on the dash would light...It never did that before. But the directional signals didnt work with the headlights or parking lights on...The green arrows on the dash just stayed lit. Then, when I turn off the headlights, the turn signals resumed working...But if its the left turn signal, all of a sudden, I noticed both my A pillar gauges light's were blinking in time with the Left directional indicator...Turn the head or parking lights back on, and all blinkers stop! And all this is accompanied by that incessant 'TAILLIGHT FAILURE' check control....So, I dont think its related to my Clear/Red taillights anymore, since it happens with both stock and these. One more thing...I notice that when I turn the head lights on and both green directional indicator arrows light up together, I hear like a 'boing' coming from the speedometer gauge cluster in the dash...Sounds like a relay or something. Ok..So thats my sad story...Does ANYBODY have any idea what gremlin has struck? Before you suggest it, Ive swapped out each bulb and socket from stock taillights to Euros, and back...It made no difference. The stock taillignts are back in there now with their original bulbs and sockets, so that when I take it to the dealer, he doesnt start blaming it on the Euro taillights. One thing I thought of was that maybe while using fine sand paper and a little steel wool to clean the contacts on the sockets and bulbs, a little strand of the wool managed to short out a connector. But since its happening with both Euro and Stock lamps, I ruled that out...But I also steelwooled the female connector to the lamps plug...There are 8 little holes which I twisted some steel wool and cleaned them out. But again, I blew any strands out of there, and it looks very clean to me...So again I dont think thats a factor. Good luck .... If anybody can help me solve this before I get to a dealer in a week or two, I'll come up with a prize for you...And thanks!
