I turned the hub assembly so I could get the 16" breaker bar on it. For the rears, due to the limited room, I used the same standard ratchet, and whacked it with a dead blow hammer. Those were the good 'ole days, weren't they? Thanks for all the offers to pick the M5 up for me, but I think it best to have the car shipped. Hopefully I will have it in a week or two. First thing I plan to do when the car shows up is run it over to K-Mart for a tune up. Hope they know what kind of oil to put it in :-) Suzy Joe Dyer wrote: > Jim's probably too busy managing his brothel! I'll go down to LA and get it > for you. =8^} > > Joe

#6. Brembo Rotors (was Too Quiet!) - from Dorffer, Rich

Date: Tue, 28 May 2002 10:48:27 -0400 From: "Dorffer, Rich" <RDORFFER@CleIndians.com> Subject: Brembo Rotors (was Too Quiet!) Joe says > > Well, where are all you guys? It's been awfully quiet today. Well, I just got back from spending the weekend at Mid-Ohio. The car and I returned in one piece thank-you very much. Actually, I think all the students had the same experience I did (car and driver returned in one piece). It is interesting to see that some of the same passing problems exist in the B run groups as do in the C & D run groups. I am not sure if it is a pride issue (those pesky E30 M3 and E46 M3 owners) in the B run group or lack of observation like C & D. I also like how some of the out-of-state new people "allow" me to pass on the right and wonder when I don't (Ohio chapters only allow passing on the left) but I digress..... But, I can't say the same for two different 95 M3 LTWs on Friday. One in particular some of you may find interesting. Tom Kane's LTW (Michigan native) suffered terminal brake rotor failure. If any of you know this guy, he is pretty fast instructor and drives his LTW hard. On Friday, he was out practicing and took some guy's girlfriend for a ride on the track. He was pushing it pretty hard when the front locked and he spun and went off track and ended up hitting a tire wall. The problem resulted from an ->exploded<- left front Brembo cross drilled rotor (he had Brembo calipers and rotors). Turns out the rotor was fairly worn (not sure what the thickness was) and stress cracks had developed around the holes. The right side also reflected this situation. The girlfriend was understandably very shook up. Both airbags went off and the passenger side air bag broke/bulged out the windshield. Tom will likely rebuild the car and pay closer attention to his rotors in the future. I am sure someone else has more details. I was going to take pictures of the rotor (the exploded one as well as the one still intact on the right side) but failed to figuring someone else already had and would post them somewhere. Moral of the story - If you use cross drilled rotors at the track, pay close attention to them to determine if any stress cracks begin to show at the holes. Later, Rich - Seriously slow out at the track but becoming a better driver I hope! PS - OE rotors (Euro floaters) and see no reason to change with anything with holes in them. - Also, I was kidding about the E30 M3 and E46 M3 owners, they let me pass pretty easily.... not true for some of these other numbskulls.

I suggest going with the Brembos. I'm sure others have info on where you can get inexpensive Euro rotors, I don't.

Rich, I posted a review on the do's and don'ts of cross drilled rotors from fellow listers. The first point was as followed... 1) it seemed to be general consensus that using c/d rotors on a tracked car was not a good idea (possible cracking) Looks like this list speaks the truth again! Glad to hear no one was hurt. Bob Gill - (still working on that GP for c/d and slotted rotors) 97 ///M3 coupe Philly Region SCCA AS Champion 1997 & 2000 BSP Champion 2001
