From time to time during driving, I hear three beeps coming from somewhere under the steering column. The cause may be the OBC, but I haven't set any limits or anything of that nature, and nothing shows up on the OBC when the beeps occur. Weird question, I know, but any ideas? #2. NJ Inspection - from john_stoj@excite.com

Here in Georgia (and Illinois, North Carolina, and Indiana before that), an amazing amount of seemingly un-roadworthy vehicles make it past "inspection." When I used to live in NJ, inspection was yearly, and they really gave the car a thorough going-over. One of the things they tested for instance was the headlight beam focus. Imagine if you actually had to have properly aimed headlights to pass inspection? Half the cars (and trucks especially) would fail. - John S. former NJ resident ------------------------------------------------ Join Excite! - http://www.excite.com The most personalized portal on the Web!

This happened to my car when the clock bulb stopped working on the OBC. The same morning I noticed the clock was out, I started getting three beeps of the same tone/duration the OBC uses. My clock bulb wasn't actually burned out; my mechanic jostled the OBC while working on other stuff, and when I got the car back, I noticed the clock display was working again... and no more beeps! Not an answer, but at least it's another data point. Maybe the OBC is smart enough to know when the current draw of the bulbs isn't what it should be? Maybe the car is smart enough to know when a bulb somewhere else is out too? - Chris

Gas on shoes from stepping in gas some other motorist spilled (Maybe why > NJ doesn't allow self service?) Wow, NJ doesn't allow self service either? Man.. crazy. I thought Oregon was the only state like that. Well, at least they don't allow self service until you roll in at 10pm with 12 bimmers and the one attendant on duty basically says "eh, go ahead and fill 'em up, I don't care." - reid

#5. Cam Kit Questions - from Reid Conti

Date: Fri, 31 May 2002 10:25:46 -0700 From: Reid Conti <reid@conti.net> Subject: Cam Kit Questions Howdy.. I thought I'd check in with some cam kit questions, since people are talking about them.. I assume this is the OBD I Shrick cam kit.. you can get it from eurosport for about $2500, includes cams, chip, euro HFM, filter, bigger injectors, etc.. correct? Should titanium valve springs be fitted at the same time? What does installation on something like this run? I think this is outside of my realm as a DIY-er.. I'd like to do this some day, though.. I don't want to go FI -- I don't need that much power, or to spend that much money.. I just think the cam kit would give it a nice boost and a more motorsport feel with that zingy top end. My main concern is this. The euro 3.0 made 286hp at the crank. Unless I'm terribly math-deficient, a US 3.0 with this kit, putting down 240-250hp at the wheels, is making slightly MORE power at the crank than the euro engine. This can't be free power. I mean, the euro engine was a marvelous piece of work.. and we're attempting to make the SAME power out of a less .. how should I say.. refined.. expensive engine. Doesn't this bother anyone? I'm kind of worried about longevity. It just seems you don't get something for nothing. Why didn't the euro cars get this cam kit added to a lower-end engine? Why did BMW need to spend so much money to develop such an awesome engine, when we could get basically the same power curve out of a cheaper solution? I'm, of course, assuming that the power curve is about the same.. I've seen dyno charts of a US 3.0 with cam kit, and I've seen charts of a Euro 3.0.. they make about the same peak power, IIRC, and the curve looks about the same.. the torque curves are then about the same, no? Has anyone had problems with the cam kits, IE valve springs allowing piston/valve collisions? What am I missing here? I guess I'm just afraid the cam kit is too good to be true. If it ain't, well, it's going in my car pretty soon :) thanks - reid

Date: Fri, 31 May 2002 13:48:51 EDT From: HYPERM3@aol.com Subject: Re: Gasoline smell For the most part gasoline smells come and go. They just appear out of nowhere and leave just as fast. Ideas of where they come from have been mentioned and for the most part should be considered. Personally, if you smell it more than 2 times, I feel its something to start fretting about. When I worked in the service dept. at a BMW dealership gasoline smell was somewhat a common occurrence in the E36. The main problem usually was the expansion tank tube seal right by the filler. If you pull away the rubber seal on the outside and look up and to the right with a flashlight, you will actually be able to see cracks if this is your problem. Something everyone should check for after a while if you have over 60k on the clock. My $. 02 Alex "HyperM3" Demsky 97 S/C M3 ~Passed inspection today~

Have since talked to Josh MacMurray at Eurosport who told me that he found similar scoring (or "galling") on 3 of the 4 M3s in which he has installed cam kit! Best guess is that damage caused by metal shaving that was not properly flushed at factory. Since car is apart and additional labor will be minimal, we're replacing the journal. How common is this problem? Neil Wash, DC 99 M Coupe
