#1. Just Another Suspension Report - from Steve Klein

Date: Tue, 04 Jun 2002 17:12:46 -0500 From: Steve Klein <klein@robinsonad.com> Subject: Just Another Suspension Report To sum up: Aluminum Control Arms - Turner Motorsport Koni Streetline set: - T.C. Kline Racing Koni SA's HR OE Sport springs Billet Al. Mono ball - T.C. Kline Racing Rear Shock Mounts Polyurethane CA & Rear - Bimmerworld Trailing Arm bushings The car was 'floaty' over the rough roads here (K.C.), bouncing more than deflecting. I replaced the rear shocks, springs and mounts Memorial Sunday, and 80% of the handling returned (purely unscientific results). The front still had some knocking and thumping on bumps and was not crisp and responsive. This past Saturday, I performed the Koni Strut Cut and Gut on the front end and with everything apart, replaced the control arms and pressed out the old bushings and the new ones in. The new bushings rotated around the end of the CA quite freely (I couldn't spin the old ones at all) and were lubed with a white (lithium?) grease. They had a small hex bolt that apparently squeezed more grease into the coupling after they are placed on the end of the CA. The Al. CA's must be half the weight of the steel. The Cut and Gut was without hitch, but being at a friends metal shop played no small part. The 22 mm deep socket was crucial to the operation. My friend welded a handle on and I used a 1/4" drive 11 mm socket through the 22 mm center to hold the top of the shock stationary. The original struts had EIM hex tops and came right off. The left strut had about as much gas pressure as a flat pop can, and there was none on the right. They were VERY easy to actuate by hand, while the Konis laughed at my efforts. Installation was without incident, tho I did remove the stabilizer bar for better access to the central ball-joint nut on the CA's with a full sized combo wrench. The torque wrench wouldn't fit (engine mount (?) blocks the socket) so I made it Guttentite with the provided lock nut. Rear shocks: 1/2 of firm range, Front: 1/2 of firm range (180 deg?) Great Humperdink. I couldn't believe the change. It is now the car I remember buying, and after an afternoon of being gingerly and listening for anything out of place, I was dodging potholes both real and imaginary and grinning constantly. Sinister giggles kept popping out. I have yet to install the last item, the Rear Trailing Arm bushings, and get the car aligned, but even without the alignment, the car tracks beautifully. Until the road crowns or the wind gusts. Every input is immediate and very clear. It makes driving more interactive, but I like that. The car is a daily driver until I get new skin for my bike, but it feels like new. The engine has 104K and needs a little pepping, for which I'll solicit advice, but this was one of the most satisfying jobs I've done. FWIW, with parts sourced by me, the garage wanted $1,600 and three days to do the job. Now it's just $54 for an alignment. Not bad. Hope this helps someone. All my pre-search came from this list and was invaluable, Thanks again for your help, everyone. Steve

I did the exact same thing to my new-to-me '97 M3/4 on the second day I owned it. It was a fat, West Texas cat though... I don't remember the bumper cover cost but the entire repair bill was about $1100. Bumper cover, left fog light, brake duct, fender liner, cat gut removal, etc. My body shop painted the bumper cover before putting it on the car and the total down time that the car was in the shop was about 5 hours. Ouch! Chuck Hanson

Does JC burn a special chip (Shark Injector) for the OBII Cam Kit? What kind of horsepower/torque can be gained in just the 3.0L to 3.2L manifold change (no cam change)? Thanks KLBurgess

#4. Part Number for M3 Lightweight Aluminum Bumper? - from Geof McLaughlin
Top
Date: Tue, 04 Jun 2002 19:16:07 -0400 From: Geof McLaughlin <gfmiiilist@attbi.com> Subject: Part Number for M3 Lightweight Aluminum Bumper? Anyone have the part number for the M3 Lightweight aluminum bumper? I'm interested in installing my splitter, but I have read the directions on attaching it to a stock bumper and it seems like a major PITA. From what I understand the M3 LTW bumper already has all the holes drilled for attaching the splitter support brackets. Also, I think that someone mentioned that the stock bumper on certain model years also had the holes for attaching the support brackets. Can anyone confirm this? Thanks. Geof

Symptoms were persistent soft pedal > which would sink all the way to the floor no matter how much bleeding was > done. Bentley manual has a check for master cylinder & brake booster (page 340-1). Mine seems to fail this check for master cylinder: "To check the function of the master cylinder hold brake pedal down hard with the engine running. The pedal should feel solid and stay solid. If the pedal slowly falls to the floor, either the master cylinder is leaking internally, or the fluid is leaking externally. If no leaks can be found, the master cylinder is faulty and should be replaced." My pedal, if held, will eventually hit the floor after a couple of seconds. > If the pedal is just a little soft it's probably something else. How are you > bleeding the brakes? Manual bleed. No pressure or vacuum. Also, I have an service invoice (non-dealer) from previous owner. ATE master cylinder (072-9219, cost $275) replaced due to "soft brakes" on 8/18/99. This cost seems low, anybody know if that's the correct ATE part number? Jeremy 95 M3 ps. 3 day track weekend coming up this weekend!

I think I speak for most when I say that an M3 should never be in the hands of a 17 year old. I can say this because I myself am 17. Nonetheless, I would never let anyone tear it away from me =) I love my beautiful German engineered car. My 95 M3 leaves today for a new home and in doing so I finished converting the car back to stock today. The triflo exhaust, the turner cam, the eurosport kit and chip, even the wheels and tires are stock. yes everything has already been sold. Now for the intereseting part, last month I installed a supercharger for my partner on his 330ci (my install pics and cars side by side). he always said his car was quicker than mine but now he was sure he could toast me. 3 weeks after getting everything done we decided to see how fast he really was. I did not time anything but we got the same physical results each run.... My 95 m3 bone stock from the factory won by a car length each time (0-100mph) I cant not even explain his frustration except that he would not comment on the race and he was going to call ESS later today. I only wish that I raced him with all my goodies on the car. I hope he does not get to upset when the 17yrdold (i cant believe it) who bought my car for 18000 is able to toast his 40,000 car with 10000 in mods- The M3 is truly a magnificient vehicle and I will definitely be purchasing another in the next few months. ben- 95 M3 -only a few more hours 02 Z71 Tahoe (500 hp) Faster than my stock M3.
