Unless there's something much more there than meets the eye it's inexplicable. FWIW our Chapter (Hoosier) allows the following: - Stock lap/diagonal belt. - 4 point. - 5/6 point only with roll bar/cage. As points of reference I drove at schools for many years with a Schroth Rallye 4 harness and consider this entirely appropriate for school use. I now have a roll bar and 6 point harness. Neil 96 M3

I had the exact same thing happen a year and a half or so ago. Had the fuel pump (with integral sender) changed (Feb 2001) which fixed it for a while. Recently, the fuel gauge would read incorrectly, not reading full immediately after a fill-up and being optimistic on how much fuel was in the tank (lead me to run out of gas TWICE a couple of weeks ago; once as I'm pulling into the gas station, once when I'm a block away). I just replaced the separate fuel sender unit (located in the left side of the tank; fuel pump is in the right). So far just one fill-up, gauge reads & reacts correctly, we'll see once it gets near empty. Jim Bassett

The Sedans use the "regular" E36 underpanel, which is shorter - doesn't extend as far back as the coupe ones. At least, this is the case on the Sedans that I've looked at (several new ones on dealers lots, mine and a few others). I have pix at home of the underpanel on my Sedan, and can post them on my web page tonight. (This is not to imply that you CAN'T put a JTD underpanel on a Sedan, just that there are differences between the one's on the coupes and the sedans.) Cheers, Jim Bassett 1998 M3/4 1992 325is #44 KP ....both have the same underpanel

If the heat can transfer from the metal of the engine to the coolant then it can transfer from the coolant to the metal radiator. Once the heat is in the metal radiator, it will transfer to the air at the same rate regardless of the speed of the coolant. There is no direct coolant->air transfer of heat. Even if there were, I don't see how the total heat transfer of the system depends on the speed of the water. While it is true that you won't transfer as much heat from the coolant with each pass through the radiator, the coolant gets more chances to cool off. Can anyone explain this? Maybe if the coolant flows faster, turbulence will increase, resulting in some thermal barrier forming between the coolant and engine or radiator? I know that water wetter, for example, works by decreasing the thermal barier formed by the coolant (by reducing surface tension?) Then again, with air flow, the barrier typically degrades as the turbulence increases due to excessive velocity. I'm not arguing that leaving the thermostat out won't cause overheating since I don't know; I'm just curious as to why this happens (if it does). Thanks, Matt Always the engineer, I guess :-). --- "kitwetzler@mindspring.com" <kitwetzler@mindspring.com> wrote: > > > Without a thermostat, coolant always has a wide > open path > > and will always flow through the radiator. > > Actually, this can result in overheating.
