Date: Wed, 12 Jun 2002 18:20:38 -0400 From: Mo Karamat <karamatm@optonline.net> Subject: Another fun day at Wayne's house Dear All, Well we spent another Sat at Wayne's house playing with our cars. Lucky for me the focus was primarily my car. We put in the Koni SA's in the front, with the 95 front strut mounts(I think this what they are called), and Eibach spring all around. You are probably wondering why I have not mentioned the rears. That is because for today we left the stock shocks in. I spoke with Jay at Ground Controls and he said that he is getting Externally adjustable Koni's sometime later in the year. So since my rear shocks are not that bad yet, Jay suggested leaving them in. We also changed the trailing arm bushings and installed the Shims that GC sells. We used a new strut cutting tool that Wayne bought. If you are going to install the koni's, buy it! Wayne told me that before he bought this tool, they would use a sawsALL, and then would work on the ends to smooth them out. this tool made a smooth cut after a few minutes.. Wayne found it at http://store.yahoo.com/autotoolexpress/exstrutcutto.html We also used Chester's tool to remove/install the trailing arm bushings. Another great tool.. I would also highly recommend renting this tool from Chester. It made the process VERY easy. I have heard other folks say that the eibach's are harsh. Well for this car, I would have to disagree. They only feel slightly stiffer than the stock springs. Last but not least, I would like to thanks Wayne, and Dave for helping me out with the car. Without their help, I could not have done this job. Thanks GUYS!!! Mo

Date: Wed, 12 Jun 2002 19:37:43 -0400 From: Gcfuller@aol.com Subject: Autosolutions shifter for E36 M3 Vern- I have the Autosolutions "ultimate" kit and it is awesome (the one that replaces the whole assembly, pivot point, etc. If this is what you can get, I'd recomment it. I was one of the "beta" testers for this product, and it has been improved since. Let me know if you have anymore questions, or just call Ron at Autosolutions - he's a great guy. Greg - St. Louis 98M3/4 - lot's 'o stuff (Vern - glad to hear the wheels are working out for you!) Hello all, Does anyone have any experience or info about Autosolutions shift kits? I have an opportunity to purchase an almost new one below cost for my 98 M3 but I am unfamiliar with the brand. Thanks in advance for any info! Vern Anderson 98 M3/2

Date: Wed, 12 Jun 2002 21:46:01 -0500 From: "Jeff A" <aabel@austin.rr.com> Subject: floor jacks revisited. I admit it. I have floor jack envy. At the track, people have serious hardware. I, too, would like a nice jack that doesn't require a zillion pumps to get my car in the air, one that I could operate with a finger and juggle with one hand, and have a low enough profile so I don't have to drive my lowered M3 onto blocks. Since I can't have all that and stay married (you paid what for a freaking floor jack, and who's this Steve character to whom you promised your soul?), does anybody have experience with these units (from Norco)? http://www.mile-x.com/norco71230.html - Jeff, in need of a low profile floor jack

Date: Wed, 12 Jun 2002 23:08:50 -0400 From: David Ngo <dngo@commvault.com> Subject: RE: [E36M3] floor jacks revisited. I have one. I bought it from JackXchange (http://www.jackxchange.com) instead of a Lincoln after Lincoln switched to foreign manufacturing plants and their quality suffered. For my purposes, it's perfect (except for dragging it to autocrosses - lugging around 103lbs. gets old quickly, though it does intimidate other drivers. ;-) ) For autocrosses, I'm considering picking up a 37lb. jack from Harbor Freight for $200, which I understand are backordered forever. It's got a 2 piece handle and is built like a battleship. No problems with leaks or blown seals at all so far after plenty of lifting. I have no problems lifting my car (with H&R OE Sport springs) though to reach the front crossmember I have to jack the car up from the side first to preload the suspension. I'm pretty sure, though, that this is something I'd have to do with any jack, even with stock springs. I also like the AC Hydraulic jacks that Steve D'Gerolamo sells. They're somewhat lighter, but with a shorter body. They require either stock 3 point or the 5 or 6 point, but they don't specify a roll bar with the 5 or 6 point. I run Schroth Autocontrols with ASM in my M3 for street and track, so will not be doing any home chapter drivers schools with Patroon. Couldn't get a good reason, other than possibility of submarining if belts not worn properly. Couldn't reference a specific incident or injury, only the 'we decided'. It does not look like it is the head gasket. I have been running without the internal guts of the thermostat for the last couple of weeks due to it sticking at a previous track event. I just got a new 88C thermostat and installed it. I took the car on the highway for 10+ miles keeping the RPMs between 5K and 7K and varying the engine load by alternating full throttle and part throttle. The temp did not budge past halfway. In my particular case, it looks like not running with a functioning thermostat in combination with not running the air duct/underpanel may have caused the problem. I plan on installing a new radiator cap as well and probably installing the 80C auxiliary fan switch as added insurance. Anyway, I have a track event in a couple of weeks where I can subject the car to a racing-type environment to test for sure, but I am keeping my fingers crossed! I will let you all know the outcome if it indeed turns out to be the head gasket.
