#3. Re: Brake squeal AFTER applying CRC. - from Ron Buchalski

Date: Fri, 14 Jun 2002 17:17:00 +0000 From: "Ron Buchalski" <rbuchals@hotmail.com> Subject: Re: Brake squeal AFTER applying CRC. Jason, I used the red CRC goo on the Hawk HPS pads installed on my E34 525iT, and there was no squeal at all for about six months. Now, I get an occasional squeal, but nothing objectionable. I haven't put anything on my M3's street (Jurid) pads, and I get no squeal at all. Just that wretched black dust! For my 525iT, I put the CRC goo on the backing plates wherever they made metal-to-metal contact with the calipers. After putting the stuff on, I let them sit for awhile before installing them. Basically, I applied the goo to the pads for the NEXT corner that I am going to work on, and let them sit and cure while I worked at the PREVIOUS corner. This gives at least 15-20 minutes for the goo to sit, and it becomes very tacky by that time. Then, once assembled, I let the car sit overnight, so perhaps having the goo transition from a tacky state to a dry state while assembled, and keeping the pads cool and motionless, does the trick. I do know that high pressure water spray on the calipers will tend to loosen the bond that the goo provides, and will hasten the separation process (and the return of squeal). One other thing...the CRC goo makes it a PITA for a car that's used on the track with dedicated track pads. You really need to clean the old goo off of the street pads before reinstalling them, and you also need to clean it off the caliper piston so it'll be clean and allow the goo to adhere. I'm still searching for non-gooey solutions to eliminating brake squeal. As Bobby Chay mentioned, there are adhesive backing 'shims' available. I'm going to try them on my M3 next. I'll share info with the list. -rb PS: BTW, I never had any luck using the white paste from BMW (plastilube?). The only time the brakes didn't squeal was when the car wasn't being driven! >Date: Fri, 14 Jun 2002 12:01:32 -0400 >From: Robert Chay <rchay@mindspring.com> >Subject: Re: [E36M3] Brake squeal AFTER applying CRC. > >Jason, > >CRC is probably the best anti-squeal "stuff" you can buy for stock brakes. >I >wouldn't use them on aftermarket brake kits since it's a PITA to get the >crap off when you need to change pads. What happens is that the coolant circulates too quickly to release its heat content while passing through the radiator, so it just builds up to an overheating condition. So my advise to everyone - don't run without a functioning thermostat!
