#1. New oil, no burning! - 5W-50 - from Gcfuller@aol.com

Date: Sat, 15 Jun 2002 13:56:02 -0400 From: Gcfuller@aol.com Subject: New oil, no burning! - 5W-50 Speaking of new oils, weights and prices - I've been meaning to tell you all about this... I was in Autozone month ago and found that they are selling an Exxon full synthetic 5W-50 - for (if I remember right) 3.09/qt. without starting another round of good oil/bad oil debates, I didn't think this was half bad for a full synthetic 5W-50 that we all probably change too soon anyway... I bought six and put it in my 340K 535is and the car has been "happier" since: Better mileage, higher oil pressure, smoother running and revving. And, it took just under 4000 miles before I had to add a Qt. (which I topped off with Wal-Mart's 15W40 that they sell for just over $9 in two gallon jugs... which I also use and works well in my rusty Ford pickup with a non-existent thrust bearing as well) Anyway, I think I'll try 7 or 8 Qts. in the M3 next. P.S. - To the local guy in St. Louis who just emailed me - please email again. I got the message while traveling and somehow managed to completely lose or delete it. sorry! I'd love to talk - especially since I think you had air tools! Greg Fuller - St. Louis '98 M3/4 (lot's 'o stuff) '87 535is '84 635csi euro "project car..." '78 rusty orange F150 - the best kind! I've always used SynTec 5w50 and have never burned any oil... ever. Castrol had detergents in their oil that cleans your engine. Also, I run a couple of tanks of Chevron gas per month too. I think the slower revs are from the weight of the oil. You should try the 5w50 from Castrol. I noticed that when I used 10w40, I got worse gas mileage and the engine felt a little sluggish. Switched back to 5w50 and all was well with the world again. I've used this at Buttonwillow and Willow Springs during the summer (100+ deg weather) and never had any lifter tick. Of course I had 8 qts in there too. -Bobby

Great article. I've only done one auto-x, but not really (just a casual, non-organized 'event'), but have gotten a fair amount of track time in. Reading the article makes me want to join the ranks of cone junkies. Jeff (dreaming of Motons, and pondering if they are streetable)

Date: Sat, 15 Jun 2002 19:40:03 EDT From: KLchmn@aol.com Subject: Re: Roundel Autocross Article (shock costs) Well, the JRZs aren't cheap, but they aren't the hot set up (HSU) anymore in stock or street prepared classes anymore. Motons are the HSU. Just check out the World Challenge/Grand Am cars and see what they are running for more confirmation. Turner's ProTrac is also good stuff. Price? Only about $5400 per set of 4. <gulp> How fast do you want to go? I'm not sure if this is the latest price or an old price. Call Bimmer Haus to check (they advertise in Bimmer and the Roundel). If you are running stock, street modified, or street prepared class, you should be buying Koni SAs if you want to do ok in your region. Buy Koni DAs if you want to do well in your region. Buy Motons if you want to win your region and have a chance of winning at Nationals. Driver skill level may affect above results. You will probably not win nationals. YMMV. etc. This all being said, I'm having a heck of alot of fun with Bilsteins (though I'm lusting after a set of Koni DAs)... What are your goals and how fast do you want to run? Guys like Bob Tunnell autocross as a business b/c they can make money (from contingencies and sponsor $$$) or at least break even doing it. Yeah, they have a great time too, but it is extremely serious stuff at the national level. Cheers, Kirk Lachman Sin City Chapter '95 M3 #21 I-stock

Reading the article makes me want to join the ranks of cone > junkies. I've been doing track events now for a year and a half, and spent two years before that doing SCCA SF region autocrosses (which may as well be nationals events). That experience has taught me that the two kinds of events are drastically different and offer unique things to drivers. Autocross requires worlds more technical skill and ability to 'read' a course than a track ever does. Only recently have I really understood why autocross regulars get snobbish about road racers thinking that they're "only cone-dodgers". I personally think being very fast in autocross is way harder than dropping lap times. If you've never done one, get out there. The skills you learn in autocross will make you faster on the track (but be prepared for the converse to not be true). -peterg

#9. RMS short shifter - from Reid Conti
Top
Date: Sat, 15 Jun 2002 17:25:15 -0700 From: Reid Conti <reid@conti.net> Subject: RMS short shifter So, lucky me, I ended up with a free RMS short shifter. Everyone was pointing out it is basically the UUC short shifter, which is $295. Upon closer inspection, I found that to be half true. First of all, the bottom piece (the horizontal one) looks identical to the UUC part. Fair enough. The upper part, however, is the stock BMW part -- it's the "before" picture from the UUC website before and after. So it's not height adjustable, it has the crappier bushing at the bottom, and the plastic "ball". I still need to get a carrier bushing, I think I'll buy UUC's for $25. So here's my question -- what's the deal? RMS sells their kit for $395. I don't see how they get away with selling a half UUC and half BMW kit for more than UUC charges for a whole kit. Can I buy the UUC height adjustable upper piece separately? I didn't see it anywhere on their website.. Anyway, I guess my question is, what all do I need to make this work? I plan on buying the UUC carrier for $25, and I know I also need an oval (not round) bushing for the front of the horizontal piece. Other than that, can I just install it as-is? Should I get the UUC vertical rod? thanks! - reid

#10. [E36M3] 95 oil viscosity - word from BMW - from RogRacer@aol.com

Date: Sat, 15 Jun 2002 20:31:26 EDT From: RogRacer@aol.com Subject: [E36M3] 95 oil viscosity - word from BMW Regarding the correct oil weight for 95 M3s: yes, it is confusing, because this is one case where the owners manual's recommendation has been superceded. My manual clearly states 20W-50 for moderate climates. However, BMW issued a TSB for the S52 indicating a change to 5W-30 synthetic...but where did this leave the 95s (S50)??. I wrote BMW....below is their answer....5W-30 SYNTHETIC is now the "official" recommendation from BMW. WRITE IT DOWN IN YOUR MANUAL!!!! -Roger RogRacer@aol.com I am with BMW of North America, LLC and your Owners' Circle inquiry has been forwarded to me for a response. Unfortunately, I cannot send you a copy of the bulletin that you are requesting. However, BMW recommends that you use a High Performance Synthetic Oil with a weight distribution of 5W-30. If you have any other specific questions regarding oil changes and oil consumption, you may want to contact your local authorized BMW center. Please let us know if there is anything else we can help you with.
