And there won't be any: under that blue powder coat the Bimmerworld backing plates are stainless steel. Another reason why they're a more sophisticated - and more costly - solution than most of us can home brew. Here's another installation tip. Someone in this thread mentioned reinforcing some of the stock plastic part mounts because of the pressure exerted on them by the permanently installed run of the 3" flexible hose. The stuff you get from BW is very high quality double-wall, but it is quite stiff. I used cheap, light duty, low temp PVC duct for that part. This runs from the inlet to the forward end of the wheel arch flange, and doesn't see any heat. This stuff is much more flexible and results in a cleaner installation, plus you get left with extra lengths of the good stuff for replacing the flange-to-backing plate run when it wears out. I also buy replacement high temp duct at the local aviation supply store. Not cheap, but available by the foot. Neil 96 M3

It probably will work on many other models. It basically let's you mount the Dyna-Batt as if it were your stock battery. Very clean, easy in and out installation. Of course, being a Dyna-Batt means you must buy a short positive battery cable and use it as your ground cable. Don't ask me why they do that. However, that is a very easy change as well. What is the maximum size I can fit under there without rubbing issues? Car is a '95 ///M3 with stock suspension and ten spoke Motorsport wheels. Will probably be installing Koni's soon and lowering slightly as I slide down the slippery slope....BTW, thanks to Neil for his willingness to spend so much time with me talking about his car and his modifications, and for the little spin around the track, as well. #4. Brake cooling ducts - from Paul Robertson

Date: Thu, 20 Jun 2002 09:37:17 -0700 From: "Paul Robertson" <robepa@wwc.edu> Subject: Brake cooling ducts I noticed the stock dust guards on the brakes cover the hub. I would guess this is to keep dust/heat away from the hub and I am reluctant to put on backing plates that do not retain this feature as BMW felt they were necessary. However many people have used the bimmerworld plates without ill effect. How long do the front hubs on a track driven M3 last? I have 110K miles on my car and if the hubs are approaching the end of their life... Paul

CE light still on. i drove 5 minutes to the post office. after i started it up again when leaving the post office, the CE was no longer on. any ideas what that was all about? i've seen others write that they are also using 5/50 oil, so i dont think (i hope) it has anything to do with that. (btw, i'm trying out the 5/50 to see if it cuts down on the oil burning i've been experiencing, which is about 1 qt every 1000 miles). thanks, russell dakar 99, 55k miles, 1st CE light. ===== "the state is the great fiction by which everyone seeks to live at the expense of everyone else" --frederic bastiat __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Upon your next startup, you probably got some knocking and rough idling. This would throw a fault. Got access to a Peake reader? #7. The final calibration of the butt dyno and underdrive pulleys - from Wayne Miller
Top
Date: Thu, 20 Jun 2002 14:30:31 -0400 From: "Wayne Miller" <m3@waynemiller.com> Subject: The final calibration of the butt dyno and underdrive pulleys So, after 2 failed attempts (because the shop was busy), I was finally able to dyno my car yesterday to see what the Evosport underdrive pulleys did on my car. As I expected, they did give a little bit of added hp and torque in the midrange and, most importantly, at no point did the power fall below the baseline. The peak numbers changed very little but there was a maximum gain of about 7hp and 8 ft-lbs of torque at the wheels which is about what I expected. Here are the graphs with the before (Full Cam Kit) and after (Underdrive Pulleys) and I also included the run from when my car was Sharked with the Eurosport/Conforti CAI. I don't have a baseline run with my car stock so I couldn't add that. http://64.14.56.30/m3/underdrive/UnderdriveHP.jpg http://64.14.56.30/m3/underdrive/UnderdriveTorque.jpg -Wayne P.S. The reason for the strange dip below 3,500 RPM in the Full Cam Kit curve is because of the way that the guy doing the test pressed the accelerator so disregard that.

Date: Thu, 20 Jun 2002 17:40:05 -0700 From: Robert.Eric.Fesler@nsc.com Subject: Sears Point with BMW CCA I am signed up for the DE at Sears Point on July 9. I had invited a friend to come and hang out with me and get some passenger seat time but according to the student information doccument BMW CCA does not seem to allow passengers. Can anyone confirm that this is rigorously enforced? Is anyone here an instructor for this event and if so can they take my friend for a full session? It seems like a bad rule. I learned as much from passengering with other drivers as I did from my own track time. Thanks, Eric Fesler

#9. Slow afternoon ramblings - from Jim Bassett

Date: Thu, 20 Jun 2002 18:14:25 -0700 From: Jim Bassett <jimbassett@attbi.com> Subject: Slow afternoon ramblings So, I've got to wait to leave work until the accident clears (5-car pile up on N680), and the list seemed a bit slow, so I thought I'd post some odds & ends. Unless you need a sleep-aid, I won't feel bad if you delete now (except Rich Beebe - you have to read the whole thing - TWICE <bfg>). Got the car back from the A/C repair. It certainly seems to blow colder (tested at 44 degrees before, 40 after). Car goes back for a check-up in a week - they have to make sure there's no residual leakage. M Service in Walnut Creek did the repairs; I'm surprised how many people I know that work there. Recent gas gauge troubles seem to be cured by replacing the sending unit. Car had a "hesitation" ever since I ran out of gas twice. Replaced the fuel filter - helped a bit. Replaced the spark plugs - much better. Not sure if they got fouled or not, but all of them were loose(!), so I'm sure that had something to do with it. This set went in nice & snug (and much easier with the new Snap-On socket), but I may check them in a while just to make sure. (I'll have to have a talk with the tech that installed that last set <g>) Next major repair is the rear main seal. It's leaking noticeably on the garage floor now; used to only drip in the paddock during track events, but not during daily driving. Obviously, the clutch will get done at the same time. And finally, as part of the on-going garage re-organization, I'll have a few E36 M3 odds & ends for sale. Here's a preview, if anyone's interested: - Rob Knob I (the original) - UUC e-brake handle - driver's side visor, black, airbag decal "professionally" removed by me <g> - E36/E46 stock rear brake pads - a whole bunch of 55W H1 bulbs (8, I think) - gray floor mats (BMW, from the 325is) - BMW alarm from the 325is and, possible, maybe, not sure: - UUC Strut Barbarian A web page with more detail/pix/prices will appear soon. But if there's anything there you might be interested in, send me an email. Just about any reasonable offer will be excepted; it's either sell it to someone who wants it, or throw it out. Well, if you made it this far without nodding off, thanks <bg>. Cheers, Jim Bassett 1998 M3/4 - starting to show it's mileage a bit, I think (115K) 1993 325is #44 KP - not really all that fun to commute in
