Geof, That's because you have a January 95 build date which means you have the older part number 51 11 8 164 930. Beginning 4.28.1995 the new number is 51 11 2 267 451 which is the same bumber for all the U.S. E36s and is the one for the LTW Spoiler. So for all others who want to use the LTW spoiler, make sure you check your build date before you go to the dealer and slap down another $125 for the same bumper you already have on your car. Even a couple of mm difference in offset could mean a rub. I have Yokohama 245 on the back of my street car and they rub with the wheels I use, moderately rolled fenders soon to be flat. Track - Unless your first couple of events will be in a very cool environment or very calm, get them shaved. They may not chunk at full depth, but they will be really terrible until they wear to approximately shaved depth. Kumhos don't seem to be terribly responsive to heat cycling, I would save the $$$. Mohammed, The answer to your question depends entirely on where you live. A friend has recently paid $300 (about 4.5 hours at $65/hour) to replace his shocks and springs at a local DFW independent. Another local Dinan authorized independent quoted $650 for the same job, which may or may not have included a ~$100 allignment. A dealer wanted $800 which is about 8.5 hours at $93/hour. The last time I did the job in my driveway it took me about 5 hours front and rear without a lift or air tools. YMMV. As you can see prices vary by a lot. The job is just about brain dead simple. Ask local club members for the shops they use then call around and go with the lowest known honest bidder. alex f

#8. R.I.P. 1995-2002 - from Andrew E. Kalman

Date: Mon, 24 Jun 2002 14:05:15 -0700 From: "Andrew E. Kalman" <aek@pumpkininc.com> Subject: R.I.P. 1995-2002 Hi All. I've been driving my M3 Lightweight on-track at various DE's, Open Track events and races since shortly after I bought it new in December 1995. Apart from the cage+safety equipment and replacing i) the front rotors once (I warped the factory rotors at a BMWCCA DE in 1997), ii) the original front splitter and iii) the plastic-impeller water pump, it has remained all-original. It's been a fantastically reliable car. I've had my share of Off-Track Excursions, but nothing too major. Confidence inspiring, still much better a car than I am a driver, this LWT has been everything I had hoped for in a track car. Some people voiced concern over how I was treating the car, and this weekend, well, it finally happened ... I REPLACED THE FRONT ROTORS! :O Yes, it's true. The front rotors, that have been on my car since late 1997 or early 1998 (I can't remember which), have seen over 4,000 track miles, and have been through: stock BMW (x1), Pagid 4-2-1 (x1), Hawk Blue (x2), Performance Friction 90 (x4?), Pagid Orange (x2) and Performance Friction 97 (x1) brake pads, are finally retired. I've experienced shudder (came and went), brake fade (fluid was old -- went off at 11 and 2 at Laguna -- Hi, Todd!) and surface cracking with these puppies. On more than one occasion, people (you know who you are) have politely suggested I replace them. I always said "Why? They still work. They don't fade ...." After looking at them this weekend ( http://www.pumpkininc.com/images/other/crackcloseup2.jpg ) I figured it was time for them to go. The minimum allowed thickness on those rotors is 26.4mm. Imagine my surprise when they measured at 27.8mm! There's, like, 10,000 miles left in them! The cracking is roughly the same on the inner and outer faces. FWIW, I have no brake ducting, but I almost always pump my brakes twice because i) my brake pedal has never had a "solid-wall" feel (unlike several of my other Ate-brake-system cars, but none of them have ABS), and ii) it's a habit from my 914-4, which has poor brakes to begin with. A new dawn. Bet I won't get 4,000 miles out of this set. Maybe I should start actually using my brakes ... -- ______________________________________ Andrew E. Kalman, Ph.D. aek@pumpkininc.com

Immediately I grabbed the battery charger I purchased yesterday and injected a little JC genius into Penny's ECU. All I can say is WOW! I should have done this 6 months ago. This was one of the easiest mods I have ever done to any car. I didn't even get dirty! And what a difference! The car seems totally transformed from 3K to 6K RPM. I am so amazed at how radically different the car is. Gotta go, Penny is waiting... Mel
