Andrew must > have a death wish... ;-) A couple of months ago a friend of mine, a very capable driver and instructor, had a front rotor on his M3 LTW explode in the braking zone at the end of the back straight at Mid Ohio. (For those not familiar with Mid Ohio an M3 would normally be going 120-130 mph when entering that braking zone.) He told me his car was airborne for 130 ft. before touching down and hitting the tire wall. The incident occurred during one of the instructor sessions. He was giving a ride to a female passenger at the time. Nobody was hurt, just shaken. Harnesses are good. The insurance company totalled his perfectly good M3 LTW to the tune of over $35K, although he's bought back the carcass and it will in fact be rebuilt. As my friend is the first to admit, this was an avoidable accident in that he was aware of some stress cracking of the front rotors, and that the cracks were reaching the edge. He had been planning to replace them. I should also add that this car had P-brakes on the front with their standard drilled rotors. Despite the superior process used for these (cast-in holes), when stress cracks start to reach the edge of the rotor from the outermost holes, you're in trouble. Bob Stommel, whose opinion on such things I respect, tells me that if you can feel a catch from stress cracks against the edge of your fingernail, then it's time to replace the rotors. I'd add that being conservative in such matters is a good thing. > Is minor surface cracking not a big deal? Minor is normal. See above for definition of what's not minor. > Again, nothing like Andrew's picture. Exactly. > I have to look closely to see the cracking. > Will ducting reduce/eliminate this problem? Sure won't hurt. Any ducting is good. Bimmerworld ducting is very good. Be careful out there folks. Neil 96 M3

Not mine. Same failure mode. That's when I bought the $350 Snap-on, which was expensive and worth every penny (although there are now some good but less costly alternatives). Neil 96 M3

I decided to order the impact wrench. For $20, it doesn't have to last too long since it will only be used where I don't have my air one. They also had a good deal on a 400 amp booster/air compressor for $49. Very similar to the Griots Garage one for $340. Ordered that too. Will report on quality when it comes. I bought these from eBay, they have never been used. The eBay seller neglected to mention that they are only for ACS wheels, so I will not make the same mistake. They include 10 longer lug bolts. They will probably also fit an E36. Buyer pays actual shipping.

#7. Rotor Removal - from KResener@aol.com
Top
Date: Tue, 25 Jun 2002 19:25:33 EDT From: KResener@aol.com Subject: Rotor Removal Hey list, I'm going to be installing new rear rotors tomorrow and am wondering if it's as easy as the manual states to remove them. After removing the retaining screw, do they just slip off? I can't imagine not having to beat on it with a hammer to get them off, but there doesn't appear to be a way to hit them from the backside. Any suggestions from those that have been there? Thanks, Kurt '95 M3 Coupe

#10. Rear Deck Removal? Help! - from Tom Tice
Top
Date: Wed, 26 Jun 2002 00:02:15 -0700 From: "Tom Tice" <tetice@triad.rr.com> Subject: Rear Deck Removal? Help! I'm trying to wire up the 3rd brake light on a rear wing and attempting to access the existing 3rd brake light in the rear deck. BTW this is on a '98 M3 Sedan with fold down rear seats. I have the headrests off and the rear seat out. Looking for tips to take me the rest of the way. The deck cover doesn't seem to just slide out and I don't want to break anything. TIA, Tom Tice '98 M3/4 '99 540/6 '02 325iT
