I use an impact driver tool(bought from Sears: http://www.sears.com/sr/product/summary/productsummary.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@0511654882.1025092966@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccchadcfhmmemdhcehgcemgdffmdfin.0&vertical=SEARS&bidsite=CRAFT&pid=00947641000), where you hit it with a hammer, and it helps loosen the screw. To remove the rotor, use a heavy dead blow hammer. You don't have to hit it from the back side. Hitting from the front side will help it loosen the corrosion that holds the rotor to the hub. Just hit it close to the edge of the rotor. Date: Wed, 26 Jun 2002 10:16:02 -0500 From: Neil Maller <neil.maller@gte.net> Subject: Re: Cracked rotors It's been pointed out to me that the brakes in my 'exploding rotor' post of yesterday, which I referred to as 'P-brakes,' were Brembo branded. (While Porsche brakes are based on Brembo components, they differ in a number of respects.) My apologies for a careless statement. That distinction isn't relevant to the issue, which is that *all* brake rotors are subject to accelerated wear and to stress cracking when used at the track. The consequences of brake failure can be severe (duh!) and it's a good thing to be both diligent and conservative about brake maintenance. The intention wasn't to implicate any particular brand of brakes. In fact I wanted to point out exactly the opposite: this incident occurred *despite* upgraded brakes. And it's no coincidence that I just ordered a set of replacement Euro rotors to have on hand... Neil 96 M3

I need a set of 96+ M3 kingpins and was wondering if anyone knew of a (CA-SF Bay Area) local BMW salvage yard or even a good online place? I don't want to have to buy new one as these are expensive. I'd even be willing to trade my 95 spindles but any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Rob

A hand held impact driver, the kind you whack with a hammer, worked very well for me when my air compressor was in pieces, and I had to take my struts apart. I was racking my brain trying to figure out how to get the things apart without buying anything. For $20 you can afford to buy 2 (or even 3) of the Harbor Freight impact tools, for when the first one gives out at the most inopportune time :-) Butch

The 3rd brake light wiring may be accessed from the trunk, underneath the rear deck(?) A least, this is what I seem to recall from the race car, which is a coupe. I haven't looked at the sedan. I would think it would be similar though. Or not <g>. Hope that helps, Jim Bassett 1998 M3/4 1993 325is #44 KP

#8. Replacing master cylinder: Tips and hints? - from Davis, Jake A
Top
Date: Wed, 26 Jun 2002 12:56:46 -0500 From: "Davis, Jake A" <jake.a.davis@boeing.com> Subject: Replacing master cylinder: Tips and hints? Looks like I may be replacing the brake master cylinder on my 95 M3 soon. I've developed a 'low' brake pedal that bleeding does not seem to help. Also, if I hold steady, heavy pressure on the brake pedal, I get a bit of very, very slow sinking. Does not bottom out, though. Also, I saw a few small bits of 'foreign material' (looked like rubber bits) in the fluid reservoir today. Got good rotors and pads. So, given that, I think I'll go ahead and plan on a master cylinder replacement or rebuild. Are there rebuild kits available or should I go ahead and buy a whole new master cylinder? Who's done this job and what are the tools, tricks, hints, and 'look out fors' asssociated with doing the master cylinder? Anything to watch out for with the booster etc.? Might as well do the stainless brake lines while I'm at it. Who's your favorite parts source/brands/best prices for master cylinder and lines? Leaning toward Fischer for brake lines, like the TUV approval...any others? D(st)ealer quoted near $600 for master cylinder, I see Steve D has it for $325...hmmm Looking to gather as much advice as possible before cracking the brake system. Thanks in advance! #9. Brake Pad Query - from Mel Silva

Date: Wed, 26 Jun 2002 15:00:41 -0500 From: "Mel Silva" <melsilva@mindspring.com> Subject: Brake Pad Query First, I know I'm opening a huge can of worm, barrel of monkeys, whatever... With that in mind, I have concerns over the brake pads that are sitting on my workbench waiting to be installed. I called one of the aftermarket vendors that shall remain nameless, to ask for a pad recommendation. The person on the other end of the phone recommended PBR Deluxe pads for my mostly stock, never tracked, 97 M3 Sedan. Now I am reading posts that are leading me to believe that these pads aren't worth the cardboard they came packaged in!!!! What gives? Should I send these back and get something else? My primary concern is stopping the car when I press the middle pedal. After that, I did mention to the person on the phone that the brake dust was starting to annoy me. Mel Oh, man I know I'm going to regret this...but here goes...I'm clicking "send"

#10. [E36M3] Online Parts Sources? - from twisty M3

Date: Wed, 26 Jun 2002 13:05:07 -0700 From: "twisty M3" <twistym3@hotmail.com> Subject: [E36M3] Online Parts Sources? Just checked with my local dealer, and they don't have the parts in stock (so I'll have to make two trips there to order then p/u), and they want 60% more than what a couple of listers have quoted as apx. prices. Mind you, that's without my CCA and friends-who-happen-to-work-at-the-dealer discount, but still! Just checked with Zygmunt and they only replied with "those are dealer parts," so I take that to mean they can't help me. Anyone know of online sources to get all the exhaust mounting hardware for a decent price?
