#1. Deals on Yoko A032Rs? - from Carl Stern
Top
Date: Thu, 27 Jun 2002 12:12:24 -0600 From: Carl Stern <carl.stern@xilinx.com> Subject: Deals on Yoko A032Rs? Well, 2 of my Yoko A032Rs are shot. Since the other two are still in decent shape I guess just buying two more makes the most sense. Any deals around or anyone have some used ones to sell? Size is 235/40-17 which I run on 17x7.5 (all four) stock 10 spokes. Any point in switching to Kumhos? I'd rather have extra life than shaved lap seconds. I'm an intermediate level driver. I also like to drive to and from the track on the tires. My local racer tire store quoted me $180 something each including mount and balance. Unless there is a way better deal on new ones around I'll go with them. Funny thing, I bought this set WITH factory wheels for $175 each. They had 2 autoX days on them. I'd probably be better off just finding another deal like this again and selling my extra wheels. I learned that I should have flipped them on the rims and swapped sides to prolong their life, and rotate more. I run stock suspension and alignment so I guess they are not staying very flat through the turns. thanks, Carl Stern 95 M3 ~

They last longer they Kumhos, stick better, fantastic in the rain with full 8/32 tread and are *wisper* quiet. $150 raw or $160 mounted/installed/balanced at the local SCCA friendly Discount Tire store. > Funny thing, I bought this set WITH factory wheels for $175 each. > They had 2 autoX days on them. They've since paid for themselves many times over in prolonged tire lifespan. Beware that SCCA will try to punish you for resorting to camber plates (use crash bolts if you run with that crowd). alex f

Three more words: What he said <g>. I ran the RA1s exclusively for the drivers schools/track days on the M3. I enjoyed them; they handled well, and had a great tread life/cost ratio. I use them as the street/rain tires on the 325is. And, like Alex said, you won't sound like a 4X4 <bg>. Jim Bassett

#7. Brake Pad Query - from Gcfuller@aol.com
Top
Date: Thu, 27 Jun 2002 15:48:10 EDT From: Gcfuller@aol.com Subject: Brake Pad Query I'll probably get clobbered for saying this, but I have and like the EBC "green stuff" pads on the front of my '98M3/4. DISCLAIMER: I have not EVER tracked these, and they are the new formulation that doesn't cause pad build-up on the rotors. I had the old version, and they were terrible - it always felt like warped rotors do to pad transfer. I called EBC, they admitted the problem and said they added copper (?) to the pad material and now they were fine. But, amazingly, they didn't have any replacement, trade in, or special deal program for us schmucks with the old formulation (very dumb). So, I wrote a nice letter to the president explaining that brakepads were not a one-time purchase, talked about the list, etc., and, magically new pads appeared free in the mail. I put them on, and all has been well. No dust, decent bite (though not as good as stock), and quiet (with goop). And the green pads look cool in my silver calipers next to my cross drilled rotors... (I am REALLY gonna get it from you guys now) I had PBR's on there, and these are better. They don't have than wierd PBR trait of not working AT ALL for a couple seconds of application in the rain or out of a car wash. The PBR's now reside on my big-braked 535is, and I'm careful about the rain thing. But I digress... My point is if you want a dustless street pad, don't overlook these because the first version was bad. They are good now, and seem to be holding up fine. Just another data point for everyone. Flame away! by the way, have you guys (and girls) seen this? http://www.jimmy540i.com/bmwnightmare.htm Greg St. Louis '98M3/4 waiting to install bilsteins and H & R's, as soon as I can find the bump stops... Date: Wed, 26 Jun 2002 22:21:10 -0500 From: "Mel Silva" Subject: RE: [E36M3] Brake Pad Query Okay, so the consensus is that for my use here in Houston (where there are no canyons for bombing, no mountain twisties to romp through, and maybe 2 clover leafs in the entire city) that the PBR Deluxe pads will be almost as good as stock (Pagid?) pads with less dust. The pad of choice it seems are Porterfield R-4s pads (Mark was not the only one to say similar things, I'm just picking on him for no particular reason). I have used the R-4 pads and found them to be grabby and rotor eaters when cold, but at open track temps the dust boots caught fire before the pads faded (true story! Got the meatball flag at Laguna Seca for it). The question I have now, is how rotor friendly are the R-4s pads and who sells them at BMWCCA discount? Mel

I have on occasion gotten these errors (maybe twice a year), and have just reset the codes. I think some of these are just momentary "hiccups" and aren't anything to be too concerned about. But if someone has more info on them, I'd love to hear it. Jim Bassett

EVAP = Fuel Tank Evaporative System (see Bentley pg.100-10) Diagnosis - test EVAP Purge Valve (see Bentley pg.160-4) OBDII system check for leaks in the EVAP system this is accomplished using the fuel tank pressure sensor, the vent shut off valve and the evaporative purge valve. The EVAP is the charcoal canister that absorbs fuel vapor and releases it to the engine vacuum during normal operation. I am not certain where it is located on the car.
