#1. Time to touch up the paint...any tips - from Paul Elliott

Date: Mon, 1 Jul 2002 09:26:32 -0400 From: "Paul Elliott" <elliott.paul@worldnet.att.net> Subject: Time to touch up the paint...any tips Chester, How long is the scratch? The fact that its through both the clear and the color layers, and down either to or through the primer means it'll need the full treatment, but if its not too long, I would try it yourself...Jim's writeup on apexone is excellent...I think you should apply the technique he describes for chip repair to your scratch. The only thing I might add is you might want to start off with a thin layer of primer, and then just decrease the number of color coats you'll use. The idea is if you can smoothly build up the scratch to slightly higher than the surrounding paint, wet-sanding/buffing it back down to level should hide it as well as a chip repair. If its long, ie, > 6" or so, its going to take an awful lot of work, and you may want to have it done professionally. If its one of these bigger ones, have you thought of trying to get insurance to cover it? You could always claim someone through a piece of scrap metal at the car as you drove by, and it managed to create this scratch on the hood...Or you could just claim when parked and in the store, someone must have keyed your hood. etc. But if its not too big, I think you can do a good job yourself...Oh...one more thing....Youll have much better success, in general, if you have a non metallic color. For large repairs, its very difficult to get a good match on metallic colors...Those metal flakes are the pits for uniformity of lie. #2. RE: Bad Wheel Bearing? - from Mike Frank

Date: Mon, 01 Jul 2002 09:18:28 -0500 From: Mike Frank <mfrank28@comcast.net> Subject: RE: Bad Wheel Bearing? Peter, Could be a wheel bearing, but if it only makes the grinding noise during full lock you might want to check other things. Below is a copy of one of my posts from a while back. The best way I've found to check for a bad (front) wheel bearing is to pull the wheel, take off the caliper and pads, and spin the rotor. If you can feel or hear some grinding, then it's bad. If you have the time, it's even better to pull the rotor off and just spin the spindle(?). I've had 2 wheel bearings go bad and this test spotted them both. All the other tests were inconclusive. Note, neither bearing had any detectable play/slop in it. While driving the car, the bad bearing sounded like a periodic grinding or waa-waa sound (can't think of a better description) that varied with speed and intensified while turning. IMPORTANT: Check your tires. About 5k miles after replacing my bearings, an almost identical noise reappeared. I couldn't believe I toasted the new ones so quickly. I didn't. It turned out to be the crazy wear pattern on the worn out S02s which had a rough life coping with a lot of negative camber. Well, after "a hard day at the track" it may be something brake-related. Wheel bearing noise is more like a rumbling - unless perhaps they're really far gone! If you've cooked a caliper dust boot and it's come out out place, it can stop a piston from retracting fully, causing a brake pad to drag and make noise. To find out you'll have to jack the car of course. Pull the caliper and spin the wheel, listening for anything unusual. Wheel bearing R&R is pretty easy (I have some instructions if it turns out you need them). Neil 96 M3

#8. ABS Light and Changing the Brakes - from Wayne Miller

Date: Mon, 1 Jul 2002 11:21:46 -0400 From: "Wayne Miller" <m3@waynemiller.com> Subject: ABS Light and Changing the Brakes When I swapped out my stock (Jurid) pads for my PF90's a few weeks ago in preparation for the school at Pocono, when I restarted the car for the next few times, my ABS light would come on and then it went away. I didn't think much of this and then this weekend, I swapped my rear PF90's for some new PF97's and the same thing happened. The ABS light would come on when I started the car. I would cycle the ignition and it would come back on and then it just magically stopped. I am not worried about this but does anyone have any ideas? Does the ABS light come on if the fluid level is too high? I did compress the pistons when I swapped the pads. The rears are stock calipers if that matters. -Wayne
