However, based on the recent postings I've been using my 97 M3 for Tarheel BMW CCA schools. I have used a dedicated set of track pads for it. First I used Carbotech Panther, then a used set of Cool Willy's. The Carbotech Panther lasted me 3 schools (VIR Full, VIR South, Charlotte Motor Speedway). I used the Cool Willy's on VIR Full and they looked pretty good coming off the car. One thing I did do was get a new set of rotors for the street and swap to the old rotors for the track. I got Brembo front rotors for $50 each and Zimmerman rear rotors for $50 each. I changed rotors and pads before leaving and carried both my street pads and street rotors to the track with me as spares. I think this is the way to go. The M3 will only see occasional track duty at this point - I have a Miata. I have actually used the Miata a lot on the street lately, so I have street pads on it, but will be using Carbotech and Hawk pads on the track. I don't have a second set of rotors because the car will end up a race car next season anyway. Good luck with your decision. I recommend being anal and carrying full spares. If you have a rotor or pad failure, you can still get home. As an aside, I noticed you're from Cary. Are you going to the VIR North course event this weekend? -matt -- matthew c. mead 97 Dakar M3/4 - sharked, xbraced 97 White GS-R/4 - stock (wife's) 92 Black Miata - dropped, dampened, headed towards SM http://www.goof.com/~mmead/

#3. No to Mini dealer markup - from HYPERM3@aol.com

Date: Mon, 1 Jul 2002 18:34:17 EDT From: HYPERM3@aol.com Subject: No to Mini dealer markup From what Ive seen and been told at my local dealership, they are charging list price. I go in all the time and they usually have at least 20+ minis on the lot with about 30% being S versions. This is the Princeton, NJ dealership. If you call, ask for Alan Causing. I used to deal with him when he was in BMW service and then moved into Mini sales. He's a great guy and will take care of you. Just tell him Alex with the yellow M3 sent ya. The number there is 609-452-9400. I have no affiliation with the dealership or otherwise. They also have a great service group too. Alex "HyperM3" Demsky 97 S/C M3

I know BMW of Sterling in VA has a policy against mark-up, and a full Mini showroom with quite a few S' sitting on the lot. I spoke with the owner himself and gave him some kudos for running his show sans market adjustment. If/when I buy new or CPO he's got my business....BMW of Murray in SLC also doesn't mark-up. Don't know if they're a Mini dealer or not. I would imagine so since they are the only dealer in the state. I agree, get the PF97s, direct from Porterfield Brakes with the 20% list discount. Also, if it hasn't been mentioned already, get a set of dedicated F rotors for the track as well (Brembos are $60/each from The Ultimate Garage). Not much extra time needed when swapping pads, and the pads will thank you <g>. Any suggestions, or does anyone have a spare? > I'll drive anywhere in the SF bay area to get it. Pretty good ASCII art! The part is: Spacer 31 32 1 129 977 and it's used on many different BMW strut assemblies (E31, E32, E34, E36, E39, Z3-M). It's readily available to order from any BMW dealer, but I doubt you'd find them in stock. And as you've already figured out, yes, you absolutely must have them. What happened to the spacers from your existing struts? Neil 96 M3

Date: Mon, 1 Jul 2002 19:01:59 EDT From: Sprichardson@aol.com Subject: Re: poor man's understeer correction Mark, I installed 245/40-17 Bridgestone SO3 pole position tires on 8 1/2" M contour wheels on the front of my 96 M3 coupe (to match the rear) a couple of weeks ago. Just like the guys on this list who told me it would work, I experienced no rubbing or other negative issues with this set up. The main reason I did it was to allow front to rear tire rotation, but less understeer is a very small side benefit ( I guess... haven't been on a track yet). This is not what I'd call the "poor man's" solution since new front wheels are almost $300.00 each. I think it would have been less expensive and more benefitial to add negative camber provided understeer correction had been my main objective. I'm told that Eibach or H&R springs will still work with this wheel and tire combination, so this, along with swapped strut hats are probably next as I slide further down the slippery slope.... I hope this information helps, and thanks to you other list members for all of the great advice. Scott 96 M3/2

Kit, It's not rocket science and if your favorite gas station has a workshop attached they will have the special gauges to do a recharge. I would trust it to the Arco station on Foothill Expressway near Stevens Creek, for instance. #11. DieHard Battery for 95 M3 - from Dan Bocek
Top
Date: Mon, 01 Jul 2002 16:44:00 -0700 From: Dan Bocek <dan@rasy.com> Subject: DieHard Battery for 95 M3 My stock battery finally died, so I did a little research on an aftermarket replacement. Other's have used the Exide 49-84N. This turned out to be a non-maintenance free battery, so I headed over to Sears. The "49" in the Exide part number means the battery is a "Group 49" form factor. Every battery has a group number, which is a standard that battery manufacturers adhere to. If the Exide group 49 battery fits the 95 M3, then any group 49 battery should also work. DieHard has a group 49 out of their "International" line - vented and maintenance free. 99 bucks (cheaper than the Exide) and fits like a glove! -Dano-
