#1. Aftermarket rotor touching control arm - a fix - from peter@guagenti.com
Top
Date: Tue, 2 Jul 2002 15:21:39 US/Pacific From: peter@guagenti.com Subject: Aftermarket rotor touching control arm - a fix I wanted to send out a potential fix for those folks who were concerned about occasional rotor contact against the control arm with their big brake kits/aftermarket rotors. Seems that when most companies design their kits, they get into very small tolerances for fitment, and that those tolerances are actually smaller than what BMW allows. If you look at the casting on your control arms, you'll notice that there's a size difference on the edge. You can safely grind away the excess on the control arm that is touching in order to gain clearance back. This will work in my case without adverse affects. If grinding off the excess will not provide enough clearance, you have a different problem. Otherwise, issue resolved. -peterg ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This message was sent using HiSpeed Technologies Webmail. http://www.hispeed.com

#2. Re: Climate Control Problems / Noise Under Hood - from Jason Sarich

Date: Tue, 2 Jul 2002 15:56:48 -0700 From: "Jason Sarich" <sarich_m3@prontomail.com> Subject: Re: Climate Control Problems / Noise Under Hood I have that same problem currently, and had it before (minus the noises). The problem is the blower motor failing on you. I have already had mine replaced and called the BMW dealer today to find out if the work they did almost a year ago is still under warrantee. I have a rattling (sounds like flywheel) when taking off (at initial application of throttle as the clutch is disengaging). I have noticed that if I turn the AC off, I either don't hear it or it is much less. I have to confirm that. I didn't hear it at all today, and that was with the AC off. Anyone else care to comment on what they think it is? Jason Sarich Date: Tue, 01 Jan 2002 15:56:55 -0500 From: Mike Frank <mfrank28@comcast.net> Subject: Climate Control Problems / Noise Under Hood Anyone have any ideas on this one. About a week ago my climate control started acting up on my 97 M3. It occasionally wouldn't turn on after starting the car, but would come on after a few minutes of driving. Then maybe turn off again or flash on/off a few times. Usually stayed on once running though. The last few times I drove the car it wouldn't come on at all - short 10min trips. All the fuses were OK. When a parked the car today I noticed strange under hood noises near the fan, more to the passenger side. Almost a rattling or rubbing noise, periodic in nature ~5Hz or so, that fades in and out. Possibly belts? How much play should there be in the fan? It looked to be a little off balance, but I've never really examined it before. Could the noise be related to the climate control problems? I also noticed unusually warm temps in the footwell without the climate control working. Any help is much appreciated. #4. Windshield damage - from Paul Elliott

Well, its either there, or in the paint on the hood...Neither makes me happy. But this afternoon, I managed to catch one right in my field of vision, right at eye level straight ahead...I saw it coming, getting bigger and more visible as it approached. Then, smack...It was small, and what it left was like a BB sized divet. I was hoping that when I got home, and hit it with some glass polish, it might just polish off...Silly me...So what I have now is a BB sized clean divet...Just deep enough to catch a nail on . Not real bad, and in no danger of cracking or growing...But damn annoying, added to the collection of others like it, I must have about 4 scattered across my windshield, but this is the only one directly in my field of vision all the time. Is there anything I can do? Once, I tried one of those glass polishing kits from Eastwood, with the cylindrical felt polishing surface for use in a drill which comes with a powder which you mix into a slurry, and apply to the glass, where it flings the stuff all over the place, but doesnt do much to the damage..Actually, it was counterproductive, as the area I polished developed some distortion, and became a slightly different consistancy, which was even MORE distracting! Does the dealer do anything with this type of damage? Does insurance do anything...(oh stupid me...with a $500 deductible, I guess its not relevant, unless I were replacing the whole windshield, which I suppose is an option, but seems like a bit of overkill at this point) Any suggestions would be appreciated. thanks. But it doesnt...Thats what full glass coverage means! So, Allstate give me the name of the shops they use, Payless Autoglass...I make an appt with them to come out to where I live...They actually bring a replacment windshield with them, and when there, they decide whether to repair or replace...Since the pebble damage I got yesterday is right in my field of vision, and becaues its a scuff and they dont polish out scuffs, theyll probably elect to replace...And the best part is that its 100% covered, with No Deductible....Get a new windshield for free! What could be better than that...The car's 3 yrs old with 43K miles, so you can imagine there are pits and marks all over it... Now, one last question...The Windshield is part of the structural integrity of the car. Does a windshield replacement necessarily compromise the integrity of the structure, or, do standard replacment techniques ensure that the integrity will be restored? ie, am I better off trying to learn to live with the distracting marks, or, just having it replaced? thanks. If they prep the area correctly and if they perform the correct installation procedures, etc, you should be fine. If I were you, I'd remove the a-pillar linings so they don't get goup on it. Also, make absolutely sure that you get BMW glass, unless you don't mind generic stuff. Chester ===== __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Sign up for SBC Yahoo! Watched them replace the windshield in my wife's Tiburon last week. All they do is run a slim knife along the edge to cut the seal, remove the rubber gasket, add a layer of rubber glue, put on a new gasket, and seal in place. Don't drive for about 4 hours, no pressure wash for 2 days so the hard streams don't drill a hole in the sealant while it is fully curing. Glad to see CT covers glass as well. I disagree on the BMW glass thing. I talked to a guy at Novus who was VERY knowledgeable about glass.. he told me the company that originally made BMW glass, and told me what year they switched to a new company, who the company was, and that the same company makes the generic glass.. the only difference is the eraser-head-sized roundel on the BMW glass, and I think it's $100 to $150 more.. so if you're paying for it, it's not worth it. If it's an insurance job, BMW glass would be preferable.. but really the generic (if you get the right generic, at least) is the same windshield. I paid for it myself, when your insurance rates look like mine do, you don't use insurance for anything :) Came to $286 for a full replacement. Local BMW shop wanted $650 to do it with BMW glass. - reid
