The ultimate limitation tends to be ground clearance. Winter tires are of course a matter of compromise. The narrower, softer, grippier and more tread-detailed the tires are, the better they work on snow and ice. But the worse they are under normal conditions. A prime example would be the original Blizzaks, which were phenomenally effective when the going got really nasty, and horrid all the rest of the time. These types of tires also typically have low speed ratings, an issue for the M3. (Note that there are now performance versions of the Blizzaks too.) If you lived in upper New York state, where the winters are long and the snow gets deep, then you would want to compromise on the narrow and grippy side. This would call for no larger than 215 section winter tires on either 16 (see more below) or 17 inch rims. For less severe and more occasional winter conditions like yours a 225 section performance winter tire is a good compromise. I live in northern Indiana and have 225/50-16 Pirelli Winter 210 tires (several years old - there are now other variants of these also). They have worked very well for me. On 17 inch rims you'd use 225/45-17. I chose to use 16 instead of 17 inch rims to get a little more sidewall height and compliance, but only a few wheel designs in this size will clear the front brake calipers. With mine (the ACT-LS from Tire Rack) you can't have balance weights in the inner rim area swept by the calipers, but that isn't a problem as long as you explain it to the tire mounter. Neil 96 M3

Anyone have experience with this failure? I've searched the archives and found lot's of info on the "Crankshaft" Service Bulletin, but hardly anything on the Camshaft position circuit. I'm wondering if simply replacing the sensor will solve the issue, or is the nomenclature "circuit" mean that there's greater gremlins at work than simply the sensor (A la, "Brake Sensor" and "Brake Sensor Circuit") Comments and suggestions greatly appreciated! My '95 M3 with 99k miles has one original wheel bearing and one that was replaced at around 60k miles when the upright/spindle was replaced due to cross threading. One thing to consider is the cost of lobor in your area. Where I live in the SF Bay Area labor costs are $90-100/hour so its easy to spend alot of money on small random repairs over time. I bought my extended warranty (7 years and 100k miles) for around $1300 from a dealer in San Diego after a little price shopping and bargaining. It definitely paid for itself twice over. I don't have the whole list of things in front of me but caliper piston rebuilds, water pump and thermostat housing replacement and 2 sets of trailing arm bushings with alignments are some services that come to mind which were covered. I wish I still had extended warranty coverage. Since the car went out of warranty last Nov. (at 95k miles) I've spent around $4k on repairs (AC, radiator, Guibo, leaking valve cover, o2 sensor, coolant sensor, CAT, power steering hoses, ignition coils...).
