#1. OBD2 cat on 95 M3 - from Robert S. Hatrak II

Date: Mon, 8 Jul 2002 12:29:20 -0700 From: "Robert S. Hatrak II" <hatrak@ix.netcom.com> Subject: OBD2 cat on 95 M3 A few months ago I think I mentioned that I was thinking of putting an OBD2 cat on my 95 M3. If not, well.....tomorrow is the day. Has anyone else done this mod? For those that don't know, the 95 M3 cat has a really nasty 2-1 exhaust plumbing connection that the 96+ OBD2 cars do not have. I hoping that this mod will give me a little more "oomph" and I can even further embarrass the OBD2 M3s that want to play. <VBG> Thanks for any input. Rob 95 M3

The car has seen quite a few track days >and I am wondering when I should replace the bearings as preventative >maintenance. There are a lot of variables involved in determining the life of a wheel bearing. I had one of the rear wheel bearings replaced at 94,600 miles on the M3, based on a VERY noticeable noise. The 325is is due to have a rear one replaced, as it's starting to make noise (the car has about 93,500 miles). So, ignoring all the variables, I would say you'll need to replace at least one rear wheel bearing at about 90-95,000 miles, based on my unscientific data analysis <g>. I've much more confidence now in the car knowing that shodding it with the proper galoshes means I won't be puckering up the front seat as I drive this winter. On a side note, would any of you Mentats (Dune reference) have a part number handy for the suggested replacement lower chain tensioner for an 11/95 build? I'm having a buggar of a time finding one online, and then narrowing down the field from their vast parts databases. Again, a multitude of gratitude to you kind, kind people, thanks, Steve

#4. Timing of RSM replacement? - from Johnny Lee

Date: Mon, 08 Jul 2002 15:53:31 -0400 From: Johnny Lee <mclee@ieee.org> Subject: Timing of RSM replacement? A lot have been written about the symptoms that shows the need of replacing the RSM (clunking noise over bumps, etc.) I am interested to find out if there is a need to replace them if there are no signs of trouble, and if there will be any negative effect if I wait until the symptoms appear. I got a 98 M3/4 at 34K and it has 42k now but as far as I can tell everything is normal. In addition, is this really a procedure that one can do without lifting the car of should it be done by professionals? Thanks, -Johnny

You might want to try warrantybynet.com. They seem to be a very reputable company. I've been comparing the two (warrantygold and warrantybynet) and I think I'm going to go with warrantybynet. Not sure yet though. One thing to consider is the cost of lobor in your area. Where I live in the SF Bay Area labor costs are $90-100/hour so its easy to spend alot of money on small random repairs over time. I bought my extended warranty (7 years and 100k miles) for around $1300 from a dealer in San Diego after a little price shopping and bargaining. It definitely paid for itself twice over. I don't have the whole list of things in front of me but caliper piston rebuilds, water pump and thermostat housing replacement and 2 sets of trailing arm bushings with alignments are some services that come to mind which were covered. I wish I still had extended warranty coverage. Since the car went out of warranty last Nov. (at 95k miles) I've spent around $4k on repairs (AC, radiator, Guibo, leaking valve cover, o2 sensor, coolant sensor, CAT, power steering hoses, ignition coils...). If you're just daily-driving the car, no autox or track, then you could probably wait on replacing them. If you have a good mechanic that you take the car to for inspections, you can have him/her check on them (that's how I found out one was going bad). But replacing them is a fairly easy DIY job. You do need to lift the rear end, but a jack & jackstands is all that's necessary. The hardest part is getting all the trunk carpeting out of the way. Racepad.com has a procedure, I believe. If you're in the SF Bay Area, I'd be happy to help supervise <bg>. Cheers, Jim Bassett 1998 M3/4 - RSMs R&R'd twice 1993 325is #44 KP - RSMs R&R'd once very easily since there's no trunk carpet <g>

Anyone looking to get into club racing, or already racing and just wanting to improve, should check it out... if you won't already be at Buttonwillow for the club races this weekend. It's a great learning experience, as anyone else who's done one can attest. Nothing beats the rolling starts, or the little mock sprint races. Good times!!
