Date: Fri, 12 Jul 2002 22:12:38 -0400 From: <Stan.Shaw@Excell.Net> Subject: Electrical Issues - climate control & radio My '96 M3 Lux has had a strange radio problem for a while, sometimes the FM does not work, while the AM does. This problem comes and goes, and since I am not driving any significant distances, I have been willing to live with this problem. A local stereo shop did take the receiver out, send it out, found nothing to report and reinstalled it....the problem persists. My real concern is as of today my climate control is now acting similar, it lights up inconsistently (except for the greed led on the auto button which stays on even when the face lights are off). When the climate control lights are off, I do not have the ability to change any settings, and the vents blew heat for a while, and then blew cooler air. Anyone have any similar problems? Is this by chance a ground problem? I do have the Bentley Manual, and will look there next. I am in digest mode, so direct email would be appreciated! Do these E30 wheels fit an E36?? Once again I have the dreaded "pucker" at 1100 on my E36 steering wheel: leather begins to "bubble up." exactly where the left hand resides. At 16,600 miles (4/2000) dlr replaced the first one; at 27,700 miles (6/2001) dealer replaced the second one. Now, at 37,000 miles, need for a third. I really don't think that my left hand exudes some sh**t that fouls the wheel. But three times makes you wonder. My warranty runs in Aug 2002 and the dlr says, "I guess we will have to replace it again." I sure hope so. Anybody else w/this prob? Carl Sewell Charlottesville VA e36 M3/4 CCA 151298

Also, do you use a leather conditioner on it? I don't, just because I don't want to make the wheel slippery, and the leather seems to be holding up nicely. I've got a similar problem with my wheel - a "bubbling" of the leather about the 9 o'clock position. I failed in my attempt to get it replaced under warranty, when the car was under warranty. So I just live with it for now. Jim

I have no affiliation, just a satisfied customer. They offer a CCA discount and are very good to deal with. http://www.leatherique.com/ Tell them you heard about it on the M3 list, they know who we are. One caveat, the directions tell you that you can apply the restorer with "your hands to massage the liquid into the leather". This provided excellent results on the car, however after 3 days the top layer of skin started peeling off my hands. Not uncomfortable, just looks scary (I'm in sales so looks count). Anyway, great product, no hype, just results. But I can tell you that when I had my E36 4-spoke wheel listed for sale, an E30 driver wanted it - he assured me that the spindles line up perfectly. I haven't had personal experience with that, so I can't confirm it. #9. Airbag light? - from K Quistorff

Since early this week, mine consistently comes back on immediately after it turns off with the other dashboard lights at start-up, then it stays on the entire time the ignition is on. According to the owner's manual, I need to take it to a BMW dealership for diagnosis, which means automatic one hour minimum labor charge. Keith Quistorff Cary, NC

I would prefer to sell to someone local - SF Bay Area. Price is $300. If you're out of the area and I have to ship it, price is $325. Here's a couple of pix, after removing it this afternoon: http://home.attbi.com/~jimbassett/StrutBar.jpg http://home.attbi.com/~jimbassett/Fasteners.jpg Cheers, Jim Bassett

#11. the annoying "FE" check-engine light returns - from Scott Yu
Top
Date: Sat, 13 Jul 2002 16:00:58 -0700 (PDT) From: Scott Yu <segascott@yahoo.com> Subject: the annoying "FE" check-engine light returns Well, I've started to get really annoyed by this "FE" code (fuel evap system) check-engine light. I know the darn gas cap is on tight, and so far this light has come back to haunt me about 4 times. It seems to occur under the following conditions - engine is well into operating temps (running for at least 30 mins), fuel level is very low, and only when the car has been idling for at least 5-10 minutes. It has never come on while the car was in motion or when the tank was more than a 1/4 tank full. The FE CEL doesn't seem to have any negative effects on the performance of the car, and mileage is roughly the same. As long as I don't idle the car for a long time when the fuel level is low, the CEL won't come on, but it still bugs me. I've only just started to look at some of the fuel lines around the expansion tank and charcoal canister - I gave it a cursory glance and everything looked ok but haven't yet performed an in-depth inspection of all the lines and connections. I did get a price quote on a replacement evap system pressure sensor, and it goes for ~$60 new. I'm a little reluctant to just buy one to test out whether or not the sensor is the weak link in the chain, but I'll do it if I can't find any other way. But in the off chance that this has actually happened to someone, has anyone had a chance to diagnose and repair a similar problem? Any info or advice would be greatly appreciated! Also, I wasn't sure about this, but I'm under the belief that the fuel pressure system and the fuel evap system are totally different in terms of pressures... would a problem with the motor's fuel pressure system have anything to do with the fuel evap pressure? take it easy, folks. #12. [E36M3] LSD chatter ? - from Adam Fila
Top
Date: Sun, 14 Jul 2002 00:24:03 -0700 From: "Adam Fila" <fila@stealthaccess.net> Subject: [E36M3] LSD chatter ? My 95 M3 has developed a strange sound, and I was hoping the expertise of the group might come to the rescue. Few weeks ago, I had the differential oil changed by the local BMW dealer. Not being very knowledgeable about differential lubricants, I didn't really inquire about what they put in. The mechanic doing the work said I had a synthetic oil in there, so he will put the same stuff in. Few days later I noticed a sort of unpleasant, intermittent, loud groaning/grinding sound coming from the rear when turning both left and right at very slow speeds, anywhere from moderate steering input to full lock. Applying even little power seems to quiet the sound down a lot, or even make it go away. I was convinced for a while it must be a suspension component, likely in the front (due to turning) but after some time pin-pointed it to the rear. Then recently there was a discussion on one of the mailing lists about differential lubricants and friction modifiers put into limited slip lubricants. So I pulled out the Bentley and looked at the final drive section, and it mentions that if the oil level in the diff goes low, I might get chatter or gear noise. This started making sense, as the LSD is doing it's thing when in a tight turn, however I have no experience of what LSD chatter sounds like, so I am not completely certain this is it. My theory is that either the mechanic at the dealership did not put the right amount of fluid in, or that they put non-LSD stuff in by mistake, either of which could cause noises coming from the diff ? Is there a definitive way to confirm the sound is indeed LSD chatter ? If it is, is there serious harm being done to the diff ? The sound sounds quite unhappy to me, as if some serious wear was taking place in there ! I am also going for a 3 day driver school at Watkins Glen on Tuesday, so I am worried I might fry the diff at the track? I think I will stop by the dealer Monday morning, to see what they say, however is there a way for me to find out what kind of oil they really put in in case they deny responsiblity ? Should I take a sample and have it analyzed somewhere ? Any suggestions are most welcome ! Thank you, -Adam Fila '95 M3
