I'll let everyone know how I make out. I called Bilstein and chatted with a helpful fellow named Raul. He suggested I take the shock and compress it halfway, then quickly yank up and down on it to see if there's any play. I did, and there was about 1/8" play - just enough to make the clunking noise I heard from the rear. The good news from Bilstein is, yes it's totally covered and I just send them the old one and they send me a new one. I also have the option of doing a cross-ship where I put a deposit down and they ship one to me while I ship mine back. The bad news is, there's no rear M3 sport shocks in their warehouses here, and the next batch is currently on a boat from Germany. They expect to have them in by the beginning of August. He didn't like the idea of me driving on it a lot in its present condition, but felt that it should be okay for light duty since my car isn't lowered. He offered to rebuild it and ship it out same-day if I paid shipping both ways, but I'd prefer to wait for a new one and keep the car driveable in the meantime. - Chris

#2. Thinking of snow - Wheels for Sale - from Tom Tice

I've still got a set of 5 rims that would make great winter wheels. They are an 17 X 8 with a 40mm offset, older style MODA M2 (I believe) made by BBS. The M2 is a two piece bolted version of the more popular M1. All 5 rims are straight and true but not cosmetically perfect - they are winter or beginner track wheels. The wheels don't look bad but they do have some scratches. These rims are very strong but not competition light. I'd like to get $400 plus shipping for all 5 wheels. Pictures are available if for anyone who is interested. Tom Tice '98 M3/4 '99 540/6 '2002 325iT

#3. Gauge questions in an E36 325 racecar - from Chris Turrisi

Date: Mon, 15 Jul 2002 09:45:38 -0400 From: Chris Turrisi <cturrisi@worldnet.att.net> Subject: Gauge questions in an E36 325 racecar Ok gang.... I am adding 5 gauges to my, new to me, racecar... The gauges that I have installed so far from Autometer Pro-comp ultra-lite are: http://www.autometer.com/hp/index.html 1. Electric Oil Temp 2. Volts 3. Electric Water Temp The questions that I have are: 1. Should I install an electric or mechanical oil pressure gauge? 2. What should I install in the 5th gauge location? I was thinking of one of the two following gauges: A mechanical Fuel Pressure gauge model 4462 (what range should I use and where should I tap into the fuel system) A differential temp gauge model 4347 or 4348 (what range should I use) An exhaust gas temp model 4466 (one channel or two channel) An air fuel ratio gauge model 4375 Thanks, Chris T. 92 325is KP #325

Looks are not important but it must not be bent or anything! M Double Spoke II preferred, but I will consider anything since this bad boy will hopefully spend most of its time in the trunk. #5. Driveline noise question - from David Bauer

Date: Mon, 15 Jul 2002 09:08:39 -0500 From: David Bauer <dbauer@blkbox.com> Subject: Driveline noise question Group, I've got this annoying noise when I push in the clutch pedal. It is a rapid succession of about three to four "thunks" and it is not metallic sounding. The noise is most pronounced and repeatable when pushing in the clutch after engine braking. Is this a symptom of a toasted dual mass flywheel? I gave a cursory look at the engine and tranny mounts and they seem to be ok. Is it the excuse I needed to get a lightweight flywheel? TIA, Dave 95 M3

The extra width will prevent the trunk mat from sitting flat. Tire Rack sells M-Contour copies in 17x7.5 and 17x8.5 for around $170-190 each. #7. Tensioner Querry - from Steve Klein

Date: Mon, 15 Jul 2002 09:28:12 -0500 From: Steve Klein <klein@robinsonad.com> Subject: Tensioner Querry Hello, Everyone- A question on the primary chain tensioner. Since I'm waiting for the special order part, I pulled the tensioner I have to inspect it. Everything was solid, and the spring had ample tension for dampening any chain harmonics, but looking at the center of the notch that I believe rests against the chain rail, it appeared shiny, as if it has been resting against a moving part (surely not the chain?!?). It is a convex surface between the two vertical protrusions, and it's got me wondering if the rail has been worn down or disintegrated. So how exactly are the tensioners known to fail? As a note, I was getting a good deal of chain noise, especially at low speeds between shifts but the act of removing, cleaning (no debris/residue in particular, just habit) and reinstalling the unit (case first, then plunger on spring, then spring cap) has quieted quite a bit of the noise. Thank you all for your wisdom. I'm planning on taking it in for an Insp. II soon and want to be as thorough as possible on this checkup. Steve

M3 parts for sale Did some cleaning out in the garage a few weeks ago and found a few more leftovers from the M3. I'll take the best offer on this stuff plus shipping. 1) X-brace (could not find the screws, but they only cost a couple of bucks) 2) e36 car cover (I think it is the Evolution II, only used twice) 3) UUC aluminum oil filter lid with ///M insert 4) RS clutch stop (new - sold the car before I had a chance to install it) I'm also looking for some black Dinan floormats for the M5. Anyone know of a Dinan dealer that might offer a discount? Thanks! Sue
