#2. RSM investigation - from Paul Elliott
Top
Date: Tue, 16 Jul 2002 21:16:01 -0400 From: "Paul Elliott" <elliott.paul@worldnet.att.net> Subject: RSM investigation I have an appointment at the dealers on monday, to hopefully, once and for all, find out why, since they installed my Dinan suspension back in January, and retorqued the bolts since, Ive had a clunk, thunk, squeek, rattle, etc, from the area of the top of the driver side rear shock tower ever since.. From the sound after riding with me, the srvc vp doesnt think its that. It apparently wasnt loud enough for him..And hes not taking it too seriously. Unfortunately, I dont have alot of confidence that they will fix the problem on Monday. But, frankly, its driving me crazy....And its getting worse. It sounds so much to me like its coming from right behind the rear side bolster on the driver side, that I dont see what else it could be. Its not down in the suspension..it sounds like its right there in the cabin...And so far as I know, thats RSM territory...And if its not a defective rsm, it might be a washer is hitting, or even, the tower is cracked. But its got to be in the area of the rsm...Its that easy to locate the sound. Its not ambiguous to me at all. So, I was wondering, is there anybody in the NY Metro area who has any experience with this, who might be willing to have a look at this with me? Assuming, of course, the dealer disappoints, as I expect them to. I have no problem compensating anyone for the time involved. I also have a Titanium Cavellino shift knob lying around, which Id be happy to donate to the cause, if anyone's interested. Its gotten to the point where I have more confidence in fellow digest members, then I do in my dealer. And, Im sure Im not the only one! Its funny...I stick a colleague, or a friend in the back seat while Im driving, and they listen, and try to hear it...And they do, no problem...I stick the VP of Srvc in the car...he refuses to sit in the back, where its easiest to hear, and he spends the rest of the ride trying NOT to hear it. Kind of robs you of all confidence....Really pisses me off. regards, Paul Elliott --------------------------------------------------------- '99 White M3; < 45K miles; Dinan stage II SC kit with 6" RMS crank pulley: 11 psi; AA Water Injection; Fikse FM-10s; X-Brace; Dinan Koni Suspension; Stygar SS and Clutch Stop; Sound by Polk, Excelon, JLAudio

Except I still have the original 7.5" spare in the well. I tried it with the 8.5" Fikse and the mat was about 1/2" raised in the middle. The hard backing wouldn't lay down and it was just all wobbly. YMMV. Dave Hogg

Andrew, I live in Kansas City (MO) and ran 19" wheels on two previous BMWs. I ran 19" BBS Challenges on my 2000 e46 328i (http://bmw.jedinite.com/photos/640/bmw_bbs_driver_side_closer.jpg) and also ran 19" BBS Challenges on my 2001 e46 ///M3 (http://bmw.jedinite.com/M3/images/640/26090010.jpg) I ran both of these cars around the Midwest quite a bit (as far north as Chicago, as far west as... Kansas). No problems in the slightest as far as bending a wheel or etc. You certainly want to be careful - pay attention to the road (like you should be doing anyways) and stay away from the occasional "New Jersey potholes" and you'll be fine... FWIW, the 328i was also tracked several times wearing the same 19" setup. The e46 M3 wore 18" BFGs for the track, but did get around the track just fine with the 19's on in the rain (and Yoko AVS Sports). Short answer - you won't have any problem with the BBS LMs in 18". You are correct regarding the fitment. The only fitment for the e36 and e46 that BBS imports to the states is 18x8. You can contact BBS and have them make you a set in any size you require... however the pricetag is significantly higher (!!!). If you are serious in doing this and need a contact at BBS, drop me line off the list. Likewise if you are interested in ordering the "regular" LMs - I've got a contact I can pass you off list who can probably get them to you at a discount from retail. My personal suggestion - the BBS LM are certainly very very good looking and very well built wheels. But I'd take a look at the BBS RC or CH as a very nice wheel for a lot less money. You can see the BBS RC on my (former) e46 ///M3 here: http://bmw.jedinite.com/M3/images/1st_HPE/640/16190007.jpg Thanks, Eric ///M Foster http://bmw.jedinite.com and under development: http://performify.com

Date: Tue, 16 Jul 2002 21:37:34 EDT From: Carguymb@aol.com Subject: Re: [E36M3] SS brake lines Doug, Bleeder valves are 7mm (flare wrench or 6-point closed-end wrench recommended). Brake hardlines are 11mm (flare wrench recommended to open the line; regular open-end wrench a lot faster thereafter). Brake flexlines (opposite the hardlines) are a mix of 16mm and 14mm. I used regular open-end wrench for these (since the fitting on the hard line is what turns). All info from rebuilding calipers and installing SS lines last month, so all this is accurate per my '95. YMMV. Date: Wed, 17 Jul 2002 00:27:10 -0400 From: Johnny Lee <mclee@ieee.org> Subject: Place to buy Mueller Alligator Clip? I am trying to make the service light reset tool (Ron Stygar's style) and I have all the parts except the Mueller Alligator Clip and insulation sleeve. Radio Shack doesn't have it and sellers on the internet only sell them in bulk. Does anyone know if they carry it in Pep Boys or Trak Auto? Maybe Home Depot? Will a Radio Shack alligator clip do it? Although the Mueller clip seem much better. TIA, -Johnny mailto:mclee@ieee.org

The OBC side connector states AMP 1-962749-1 and the wiring side harness states AMP 1-967416-1 but I can't find any refence where I could get these parts. Any ideas who would sell these types of wiring harnesses? TIA! '97 E36M3/2
