I was with progressive and they are pretty good, very quick at handling claims but expensive... but cheaper than anywhere else with my record. :( I think I was at the $4K a year mark on my Miata until that ticket cleared... (now I pay $1200 a year on my M3, $500K/$1mil coverage, $250 comp deductible...) -kit

#4. Maybe ready to move up in tires - from Chester Wong

Date: Sat, 20 Jul 2002 13:22:29 -0700 (PDT) From: Chester Wong <chester_p_wong@yahoo.com> Subject: Maybe ready to move up in tires Hey guys. We just got back from a three day driver school at Watkins Glen. A big thanks goes to the Delaware Valley Chapter for organizing this event. Unfortunately, the event did not go without incident, but I'll leave it to that person to speak when he's ready to :) We also saw an E46M3 blow it's motor right after turn one. Apparently it wasn't event a misshift...doh! Anyway, I was running pretty well in the intermediate run group. Lou Millinghausen was my honorary instructor for the first run session while my real instructor (Asher) was delayed. We already participated at a track event at the Glen about a month ago with the Gennessee chapter so I had some familiarity with the track. Right off the bat, Lou said that my line was good. I did cook it going into turn one on the last lap and had to drift wide, but oh well :) Hahahaha. Anyway, from that point on, I was doing rather well. Asher was a very good instructor and he was very pleased with my driving abilities. He asked if I wanted to be signed off by the end of the third session, but I told him that I'd just have him drive with me for the rest of the day and the first session of the second day. I was surprised that I was passing a lot of people over the days...at least 10 - 15 cars per run session :P E46M3s were particularly fun to pass. My exit speed out of the esses was just shy of 120mph while shifting into 5th right before going onto the back straight. My unofficial laptimes by the end of the second day were about 2:30 - 2:31 =) ...not sure if that's fast for a car with only street tires (worn Pilot Sports) Koni replacement struts/shocks, Eibach sways, stock springs, LTW flywheel and big reds w/ Pagid Oranges. On the third day at the first run session, I was caught behind some slower traffic that wouldn't let me pass....must be that E46M3 pride that could bear seeing an E36M3 pass :) Once I got around the slower traffic, I pulled away from a fairly well driven E46M3 :) woo hoo! There was one fellow with an M Coupe (S52 engine...I think) and Pilot Sport Cup tires. On the second session, I had to give the only point by I gave during the whole event...I let him pass :*( But for the following 5 laps, I was on him! I would reel him in through the esses and catch up braking at the end of the front and back straight, but he would pull a bit through the twisties...which was to be expected....but I still kept up with him! WOO HOO! Towards the end of me pressuring him, I started to feel a vibration. Rut roh! Pitted in and heard this awful creaking/groaning =( I took off my helmet and as I rolled towards the paddock, I stuck my head out the window and looked at the front wheel...I could see the wheel wobbling back and forth! I thought I blew a wheel bearing! Turns out that the wheel lugs worked themselves loose!!!???!?!?!??!! I will be redesigning the hats and using steel because I think the Movit design isn't that good and I hate using aluminum there. I also hate the idea of using an aluminum spacer, so I'll kill two birds with one stone! Anyway, Mr. M Coupe guy said that he was running 2:28s...so I figure I probably improved to 2:28 -- 2:30s =) So now to my question. My instructor said that it might be time for me to move up to a more aggressive/predictable-at-the-limit tire. He mentioned Toyo, but I'm not sure if he was talking about the T1Ss or the RA1s.. Wayne Miller and Jim El Nabli use the new Kuhmo Ecsta V700s and seem to like them, but I'm not sure if that would be the best transition tire for me. So I'm thinking of: Toyo RA1s Yok A032Rs Kuhmo Ecsta V700s Any recommendations? Input/feedback? Write me! =) TIA, Chester ===== __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? #5. H&R coilovers... too low. - from Scott Yu

Date: Sat, 20 Jul 2002 14:34:37 -0700 (PDT) From: Scott Yu <segascott@yahoo.com> Subject: H&R coilovers... too low. Well, I'm sure Kit wouldn't approve, but my H&R coilovers are TOO LOW. The adjusters are ALL the way up in the front, and almost all the way up in the rear, and I am still in danger of scraping on manhole covers, shadows, and figments of imagination. I'm running K-mac camber plates in the front. Does anyone know how I can get maybe an extra 1/2 inch of height in the front? Kit actually told me once that he's able to get stock height if his adjusters are all the way up. We have the exact same setup, K-mac plates on H&R coilovers. I'm sure there would be plenty of folk out there with "slammed gangsta whipz dat be off da heezy" that would be rather envious of my ability to tuck the tires waaaay up into the fenders, but I would gladly trade that for a bit more ground clearance. PS - I did run Tremblant with the suspension almost all the way down. Driving there was horrible, I was able to catch air off the frost heaves on the poor montreal highways. But it felt purty durn good at the track :D scott yu __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Health - Feel better, live better http://health.yahoo.com

Input/feedback? Write me! =) No contest - Toyo RA1s. I ran them on the M3 for 2-1/2 years for drivers schools. Relatively inexpensive ($170-$180/tire), decent grip, good feedback, wear *really* well, you can run them full tread and don't have to worry about heat-cycling them. Pretty much a no-fuss tire. I haven't run the Yokos, but one person who has probably would recommend the Toyos (Hi Donna! :-)). The 2 sets of Kumho Ecsta V700s I've run on the race car have been CRAP. They go away after about 5-6 laps, have a wear groove reminiscent of the old BFG's "groove of doom", and I and several other racers had them wear out/cord/blister after only 3 days at the track. You can see a couple of pix of mine here: http://home.attbi.com/~jimbassett/235KumhoBlister1_sm.jpg http://home.attbi.com/~jimbassett/235Kumho4_sm.jpg For drivers school application they *might* be OK, but I wouldn't recommend them. Especially good to hear about someone beating on those E46M3's ;-)) I guess without that V8 under the hood, they're not too tough, ( I know, if I could I'd have one of these too). I'll be using the same suspension setup your mentioned when I get the Koni's this fall. What are your Koni's set at? Tires, I'd suggest the Kumho's. I like them, but then I'm an autox'er. #8. Getting a good price on the Harbor Freight Aluminum Racing Jack - from Wayne Miller

Date: Sun, 21 Jul 2002 15:20:39 -0400 From: "Wayne Miller" <m3@waynemiller.com> Subject: Getting a good price on the Harbor Freight Aluminum Racing Jack After seeing the recent posts and using Harold Chang's aluminum racing jack over the past few days, I decided to look into buying one. I received a Harbor Freight catalog in the mail yesterday and it had a $5 off + free shipping coupon on it. I found the jack in the catalog for $199.99 but used a trick on their Web site (I could tell you but then I'd have to kill you) to find the least expensive price that it shows up in any of their catalogs for and found it for $189.99. If you call them up at 1-800-423-2567 and then order part number 47246-2NTH (NOT the 0NTH in the catalog), you will get it for the lower price. You can even try using the coupon on my catalog because it isn't specific to me (at least I don't think it is) and that number is "317-967-931". I tried using the coupon online but that didn't work so I had to call it in. In the end, I have it being delivered to my door for a total of $190.94 because they give you free shipping but charge $5.95 for handling (then minus the $5). I haven't seen one in person or tried it out yet so don't cry to me if you don't like it but I doubt that you will get a better deal than this. -Wayne P.S. Ordering from them is interesting because they keep trying to tell you stuff like telemarketers.

You must not be driving fast enough! <BG> Re sticky tires... one of the best E36M3 drivers I know stayed on street tires long after he moved to the advanced group. By the time he went to stickies, nobody on street tires could keep up with him. Are you sure you want to give up the extra learning? If so... I really like the A032Rs as a first step to R-compounds. Very noisy, very linear, great on wet track. RA1s are faster and less linear, but they wear like touring tires.
