#1. RE: Bedding Hawk HT-10 pads on new rotors - from Legerlotz, Alan

Yep. Put the pads back into the box and return them for some Hawk Blues. Unless you're going to do an endurance race and use the entire set of pads in one day, IMO they're junk. Over time (a few schools/time trials/races) they would crack and large chucks of the pad material would just break off the pad backing plate and exit the vehicle. What's left still wears great, but when the piston starts binding from going against a pad backing plate that only has material in the front or back the pedal starts to feel "interesting". I went through 4 set sets of HT-10 pads (3 front, one rear) before I gave up on them. I never wore them out, just had to return or throw them away because of defects. The Blues, on the other hand wear well, stop well, and are cheaper. Their only down side is that you HAVE to wash the car after your track day to ensure that you remove all of the dust that they leave. -Al 1996 328is (BMW CCA Club Racer #328 JP)

When you call to complain that you got the wrong thermostat (my 9/95 M3 had an original 88 degree C thermostat), they will tell you that the 92 degree thermostat superseded the 88 degree thermostat which is no longer available." I was also told by my local dealer that the 92C supercedes the 88C. bimmerparts advertises the 80C thermostat (from the 318 I think?), which a lot of their customers get to try to reduce engine temps. I asked them and was told they'd ship the 88/92C or 80C as required. I asked for the 80C and got it. The cooling package is a great deal, just went through this myself. I wouldn't put any weight on having BMW roundels on the boxes - the BMW parts are the ones that fail regularly by disintegration and loose bearings (pumps) and breakage (radiator end tanks)... The water pump I got from them was very nice. andy r. 98 m3/2

#5. Going from conventional to synthetic oil... - from Juan Rico

Date: Thu, 25 Jul 2002 09:28:31 -0700 From: Juan Rico <juan_rico@captionsinc.com> Subject: Going from conventional to synthetic oil... Hi List, Here's the perennial oil question once again. With 150K on the odometer, I am going to switch to synthetic oil for the first time in my 95 M3. Looks like this summer is going to be atrociously hot here in LA, and my recent home purchase has liquidated what funds I had for a possible engine rebuild so I'm trying to "extend" my engine life as much as I can here... ;) The oil I'll be using is MOBIL 1 5W-30, courtesy of COSTCO. Here are the questions: Is this OK.? Are there any negative consequences to switching oils? Are the leak stories just urban legends? Should I expect my car to burn more oil? Is this a good oil for a 95 M3 and what you guys would recommend? My owner's manual doesn't have any info on synthetic oils- just says to consult with your dealer. I'd rather consult with the list... Thanks for any info, Juan.

Juan, Most of the myths about leaks and stuff are just that myths. Mobile 1 is a fine oil, plus with Costco and Wal-Mart carrying it the cost/benefit ratio goes way up. Personally I use Amsoil, but that's me. The only thing to be concerned about when switching is varnish buildup from conventional dino-juice. The synthetic will break down the varnish eventually, but while it does it is integrated into your current oil system and collected by the filter. This is my advise to you: Either A) use an engine flush, such as Amsoil AEF-CN Engine Flush http://www.amsoil.com/products/aef.html to clean out the varnish and deposits before changing to synthetic. or B) change the filter between oil changes to remove the deposits release by the detergent action of the synthetic or c) do both A and B Mel -----Original Message----- From: Juan Rico [mailto:juan_rico@captionsinc.com] Sent: Thursday, July 25, 2002 11:34 AM To: E36M3 Subject: [E36M3] Going from conventional to synthetic oil...
