#3. Koni SA settings? - from Mdriver13@aol.com
Top
Date: Sat, 27 Jul 2002 09:27:48 EDT From: Mdriver13@aol.com Subject: Koni SA settings? Group, At the risk of getting ten replies and ten different responses, I will pose my question anyway. As always, I value every reply based on each owners concept of what they were exactly trying to accomplish. Well, I'm purchasing Koni SA's all around and would like them adjusted to help minimize understeer when autox'ing, but comfortable enough for the street since the M is my daily driver. She already has Eibach sways (with reinforced rear mounts), X-brace, and JTD RSMs with Z3 plate, but staying with OEM springs for now. How many turns from full soft front and back works best? Date: Sat, 27 Jul 2002 10:16:23 EDT From: LoweSeaton@aol.com Subject: Re: Help! Koni Install The part is: Spacer 31 32 1 129 977 and it's used on many different BMW strut assemblies (E31, E32, E34, E36, E39, Z3-M). It's readily available to order from any BMW dealer, but I doubt you'd find them in stock. And as you've already figured out, yes, you absolutely must have them. What happened to the spacers from your existing struts? A lister removed his original struts to do a Koni gut & insert conversion and noticed one of his spacers was missing. A list "expert" had the above part number handy and asked "what happened to the original spacer?" Answer: It broke in half, disintegrated while on the car. The lister probably drove around for 1,000's of miles without it. I've seen two different cars with the same thing. Both cars had (note the past tense) Bilstein struts. The other guy has since gone to Koni after going through 3 spacers. I need to take my struts off to see if I am missing the spacers again. It is unusual that a stock strut could break the spacer. My opinion of the stock struts is they are absolutely junk. On the other hand, the broken spacer might prove my case. Perhaps the junk OE struts were bottoming out so hard that it beat the spacer to pieces. If the OE struts had more than 30,000 miles on them, very likely. But as noted by the list expert above, the spacers are not in stock anywhere. Price is outrageous - $11 each. Lowell Seaton '95 M3 - Bilstein (likely spacerless) Dallas, Texas

Mind you, this is basically just a street car, and, because I wasn't keeping track of it, it didn't seem like much... I started to think and add things up, but then decided to stop half way through and just say "more than I needed to." Tires alone for this car have been more in three years than regular maintanance on my previous cars... ALL of them! And now I ask that this topic end and be permanently banned from this list. ;) > >89 325i - Bill gave me RA1s for it - ruh roh! > Hahaha!!! I knew that was coming...
