#1. The Klunk and Charlie the Tuna - from Steve Klein

Date: Thu, 1 Aug 2002 12:40:10 -0500 From: Steve Klein <klein@robinsonad.com> Subject: The Klunk and Charlie the Tuna First, thanks again to all who responded. And thank you, Chuck. That is exactly the information I was looking for on suspension characteristics. To follow up on the klunk, I decided last night to pull the rear apart and have another look. As I thought, the RSM's and shocks were solid, with no give whatsoever. I unbolted the bottom of the shocks and yanked up and down on the wheel hub and heard, quite distinctly, a bunch of noise from the RTB. These I recently replaced with urethane bushings (I believe from Bimmerworld) and I dropped the trailing arm front bracket to inspect. Everything was nice and tight and there was no failure of the urethane. A ha! The bolt that holds the bracket on the bushing is about 1mm smaller in diameter than the threaded tube that it runs through! Since that bolt applies a clamping force, under rest conditions or small loading, nothing moves, but hit an aggressive bump and the whole bushing assembly will travel that 1mm and make a hell of a racket. As a note, the bushing is two pieces of solid urethane, each flanged like half of a spool. The halves mate into the hole on the trailing arm, and a threaded tube runs through the center. Two large washers and nuts clamp the assembly snugly into the trailing arm, and the bracket bolt runs through the threaded tube, where the tolerance discrepancy lies. My temporary solution (it was late and getting dark) has been to make shims from the side wall of a tuna can to take up most of the slack around the bolt, and on the ride in this morning, things were pleasantly quiet from that area. So now what? Do I replace the bushings with another make? Replace the bolts? I'm open to suggestions, both on my diagnosis and possible solutions. Another note about the steering response: After I'd installed the TC Kline Streetline setup, I had an alignment at a local Firestone center, but discovered that they only did the fronts. I then took the car to the local BMW dealer (Baron BMW in KC) for a full alignment. They didn't give me a printout of the before and after numbers, and I have yet to call to see if they can fax them to me. I've (stupidly) assumed that they set everything to factory specs. After my Insp II on Monday, I'll pursue the finer tuning of the steering. With much help from Chuck, et. al.! Thanks again, all- Steve 'Sorry Charlie, but thanks' Klein

Which is none of the Fidanza list. I'm confused! Neil 96 M3

Hi Russell, I use Mars Staedtler White Plastic Eraser. It pulls the wax right out of black trim. <http://www.reuels.com/reuels/product423.html> I now tape all my black trim off with 3M low adhesive masking tape before waxing. -- Rex Tener rex_tener@yahoo.com 1996 BMW M3, SCCA SFR Solo II Street-Mod #173
