I'm actually going in for an Insp. 1 tomorrow and was thinking of changing my tranny fluid to Mobil 1 ATF (that is the proper fluid, right?) instead of the Redline D4 ATF I have now. I keep having problems with getting stuck in 3rd gear until it's warmed up for 15 minutes or so. Anyone know if the Royal Purple stuff can be found at local-type stores? Obviously don't have time to order by tomorrow morning, so I guess it'll be Mobil 1 from Walmart or the like if there are no local sellers of Royal Purple. After trying all of the popular synthetics over the last few years (Redline MTL, D4-ATF, Mobil 1 ATF, even Royal Purple ATF), they all have very similar results. The Royal Purple Syncromax is not a new fluid, but newly repackaged. Royal Purple introduced this fluid more than 12 years ago. Recently, they repackaged it, renamed it 6 months ago, and just relaunched it as Syncromax. I'm not sure who carries it in bottles (chris p?) but we have a 5-gallon pail of it here in the shop to make things easy. Heck, it's a lot cheaper than replacing tranny parts that you think are worn, just to find out why a shifter feels sticky. fwiw. Whattaya know! Checked for local dealers and found about 7 that are somewhat local, or at least sort of on the way to where I'm headed tomorrow morning. Not a single one of them had it in stock, however. Oh well. At least I can try that one next time around if I don't like the Mobil 1 ATF (provided that's easier to find). Date: Fri, 2 Aug 2002 20:23:47 -0400 From: "Paul Elliott" <elliott.paul@worldnet.att.net> Subject: Where to buy Methanol? For my water/alcohol injection system, I sometimes run a mixture of isopropyl alcohol and distilled water...this works ok....but the aquamist pumps will tend to swell their seals in mixtures with isopropyl any stronger than 20%. The preferred alky is Methanol, which you can mix to 50% without fear of swelling pump seals.. The only way Ive been able to buy it where I live is to buy the blue windshield washer fluid gallons...I buy the stuff that protects down to -20 degrees, and I believe that protection usually is accomplished with a mixture anywhere from 20% to 44%, and Im just not sure which...Does anybody happen to know? Second, in the Metro NY area, does anybody happen to know of any stores that carry it? Beleive it or not, ive been to Wallauer paint store chains, and even Home Depot, and they simply do not carry any products with a proponderance of Methanol...They carry it combo with Ethanol, and with other products, but Aquamist says not to use Ethanol. Methyl Hydrate, Methyl Chloride, Methyl Alcohol, theyd all be ok I think. Thanks. Paul, If you want to burn the fewest $, look for stuff with methanol already in it. Most gas-line antifreeze contains some methanol and is cheap. To find out whats in the product, get the MSDS for it. IIRC, methanol is a single carbon atom bonded to three hydrogen atoms and one oxygen-hydrogen. It's good fuel! To get smart: http://www.methanol.org/ To get pure meth $$$ fuel, check out petro-chemical suppliers like Ashland. Or a buddy at your local CART shop might score you some leftovers. I believe your system uses a submerged electric pump ? What I don't know about is the danger of stray arcs turning you into a Crispy Creme ;-/ HTH, Bob

Problem may be in getting small quantities. You probably don't want a 55 gal drum. VP Racing Fuels is one. I have a friend who runs alky in his car. If I wanted a small quantity, I'd buy some from him, since he buys it by the drum. Jay
