Wheels are light, cheap, strong - pick only two. SSRs are light and cheap, no mystery that they're not that strong. There still may be lots of people for whom they're strong enough. In that case, lucky you, light cheap wheels. I bet you could find a lot of people selling partial sets too as they bend theirs... andy r. 98 m3/2

#2. SSR comp. bending - from Tim Ng

Date: Tue, 6 Aug 2002 17:16:07 -0700 From: "Tim Ng" <s14realm3@peachtreebmwcca.org> Subject: SSR comp. bending Speaking from experience, I have a set of 17x8 SSR comps and a set of BBS RC 17x8. the SSRs are lighter and cleaner/easier to clean design. I have no issues with both these wheels so far. I use them in both my E36 M3 and my E30 M3 track car. I think most of you have to look @ driving style and road conditions on which wheels bend. If you are RACING on the SSRs and you go argricultural, fender/bumping or curb hoping, then you will probably run a higher risk of bending the SSRs. I don't do much curb hoping and only a few argricultural trips so my SSRs have been fine. If you live in pot hole city, then I think any wheel you buy will risk benage :0) Tim Ng 95 E36 M3 BzznM3 92 E30 325ic M-tech convetible 91 E30 M3 street car 88 E30 M3 Track car 93 Chevy Blazer 2 dr. tow vehicle

I have a big bottle of the Griot Stuff too but I prefer using prepsol or Duplicolor's "Grease and Wax Remover". I dunno; maybe 'cos it smells more like a toxic solvent than the Griot's stuff. For taking the black stuff off at least, I've found prepsol and the duplicolor stuff to work better (i.e. faster, quicker) Good luck! The wheel is cheap (for such a light wheel); a set of HREs are at least 3x the price. And the SSRs are available at a moment's notice if I kill one or two :-) I like the looks. I think I'll continue to fuss over the frivolous center cap! You can just call me a rice boy then. :-) Jason Leung http://home.earthlink.net/~jhleung

In the current Roundel, a fellow named Simeon and his big 7 series machine prepared by VAC motorsports had a lil issue with its high zoot Fikse wheels during the One Lap. Something about them blowing apart. Anyone here have such issues? Jeff

Date: Tue, 6 Aug 2002 20:37:36 -0500 From: "Jeff A" <aabel@austin.rr.com> Subject: Re: [E36M3] SSR Competitions Well, this subject seems to have collapsed into the hotly debated subject of SSR comp robustness (while at the same time the wheel has practically become a spec wheel in club racing). Anyway. Here's a post from Jim at TR, in response to a question about the original, guinness-pint sized center caps on these wheels: "The new caps are shorter. If you have a set of older wheels and you are looking for a cap for the older wheel then it will be the taller cap. SSR did not make a cap for the wheel and we had one made. They now make the wheels with a cap. You can either get the BMW logo or the SSR logo. If I can help let me know. Thank you Jim 800-428-8355-364" ---------- I'd suggest giving him a ring if you have any questions, as I originally suggested. As to bending of these wheels, I agree with Andy's prior statement, which I always lived by in cycling, namely "pick two: strong, inexpensive, light". However, the SSR's are not precisely inexpensive, and from anecdotal evidence from (i) a friend who is a club racer who is brutal on equipment, and (ii) a friend that uses the comps on the street, I'd strongly consider them for street use, understanding that you cannot drive your car like a Hum Vee. I'd stick with 17's, and a 245/40 tire all around, too. Jeff
