#1. RE: SSR Competitions - from Legerlotz, Alan

Have you ever bent a wheel >>before? >> No I haven't owned them. Yes I've bent a wheel. So what? I know the people who have bent SSR Competitions and know their driving style and it certainly seems as if they wouldn't have bent them if they were using different wheels. >>I have bent stock wheels, BBS's, and TSWs. Any allow wheel can bend if you hit >>something or drive over excessive potholes (or have an off-track excursion). These issues were normal on track situations or driving over the occasional berm at track out, not 4 wheeling through the infield after almost balling it up or driving through the streets of Boston in early spring. >>Lightweight wheels as a general rule are using less metal in order to cut >>weight, so they will be more prone to bending (there are people on this list >>that have bent RKs for example). How the reduced amount of metal is formed into a wheel and the wheel design have something to do with it, too. >>But that would be true for any lightweight wheel and SSR shouldn't take the hit >>for it. Not to mention, the "bending" most people complain about are "out of >>round" issues that usually just require more weights. I agree with SSR not taking the hit for this. In fact, their "Integral" wheels are a pretty good deal. When compared with the Competitions, the Integrals are still lightweight (although not quite as light as the Competions), cheaper, and far less prone to bending... The Competitions are the soft ones. When it won't balance on the machine, no matter how much weight you add (and doesn't this defeat the purpose of a light weight wheel?) then the thing is bent. Call it out of round, etc... but its NFG until its fixed. Unless you have really deep pockets, these seem like a poor choice given the almost $400 each price.

I have ben running with COM (Corvettes of Mass.) since 1998 and known Rob since day 1. He had a great sense of humor and will be missed tremendously. Here is the article from the Boston Globe. AND PLEASE be careful out there. Ahmad. Massachusetts race car driver killed when car hits wall By Associated Press, 8/6/2002 09:02 EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. (AP) An amateur race car driver from Massachusetts was killed when he lost control of his modified 1999 Corvette and struck a concrete barrier at the Pocono International Raceway, officials said. Robert Goldfarb, 45, of Duxbury, Mass., died Sunday from blunt force trauma to the head, Monroe County Chief Deputy Coroner Jody Hutton said. An autopsy was performed Monday. The accident happened during the second lap of a Sports Car Club of America event Sunday. ''At this point it is under investigation by our people,'' said Robert Keating, president of the club's northeast Pennsylvania region. He said investigators did not know what caused Goldfarb to lose control of his vehicle. It was the first fatal accident during a club event at Pocono International Raceway since the club started using the track in 1968, Keating said. Pocono Mountain Regional police responded to the accident. But officials said police are not investigating because the death happened during a sanctioned race. Rob has been a member of COM for over five years and President for the past two years. He has made significant contributions to the organization and operation of the club, and his grace and humor will be deeply missed by all. The funeral services will be on Thursday, August 8, 2002 at 10:00 am in Canton, Massachusetts. All members of COM and anyone else, who knew Rob, are invited and encouraged to attend. The following is from Chris Tier on behalf of the family: “It is the wishes of Lisa and family that all are welcome and encouraged to attend the services and a gathering at her house (directions attached) following the services. I wish to say that she does not know a lot of you but that should not deter people from coming to the gathering, she would love to meet you all. Jeff, >>had a lil issue with its high zoot Fikse wheels during the One Lap. Something about them blowing apart << Yikes!!! That's all I need to hear ... Mine are the FM-10s, 17 x 8.5 size. These are 3 part wheels...Rim halves attached with special adhesive, and then bolted on to the center, with bolt heads on the inside so theyre relatively hidden...Wonder if the adhesive under high stress lapping blew apart. Or if the bolts werent secure....Seems like those two would be the first places to look. Anyone else heard of anything like this happening?? I haven't had any problems like that (my car really doesn't see the track) but I do have first-hand experience that the Fikse's are not indestructible. 3 years ago I went on a road trip of the US, somewhere on the way back I hit a pothole which dented & cracked the inside lip of the left rear tire. Crack was minimal, not enough to cause the tire to leak air. Beauty of the Fikse's is that with a new rim half, the wheel is as strong as new. Andrej Well travelled '97 M3

I'd have to look up the receipt but somewhere in the neighborhood of $250 alltogether. The tire shop that I use (shameless plug: Radial Tire for those in the DC area) did all the work in house and had the wheel fixed quickly. Andrej '97 M3
