I got a relatively decent price for an m sport front strut brace ($399) from Bekker's and was told I didn't really need the matching six nut caps for (!) $93.40. Now I'm told by a friend in the local BMW parts dept. that the stock strut tower nuts don't seat properly and the brace will move under stress. He can't get LTW performance parts since US dealers don't sell them for legal reasons. My questions: 1. What's the collective list wisdom about whether these nuts are really essential? 2. If they are essential, is there a cheap source for these apparently 24K gold cap nuts? 3. Is there a Home Depot or other equivalent part that will work as well? Appearance is a non-issue for me. The brace is now mounted with the stock nuts. Thanks, Craig Perrin 95 M3 w/standard mods

David, The two most common aftermarket performance shocks for the M3 are Koni and Bilstein. The Bilstein are a direct replacement. The Koni require substantial modification of the old original front struts before they can be installed. However, I don't think Koni nor Bilstein are cheaper than stock M3 shocks. I know about the cheapest price on Bilstein is $520. Cheapest Koni price would probably be a little over $600. I have not checked into it but I suppose places like Midas or Sears would have cheap M3 shocks. I don't know how performance oriented they would be. What is your intended purpose for your M3? Between the Koni and Bilstein, I'd recommend the Koni (I have Bilstein). My Bilstein shocks are absurdly stiff. Very few people could tolerate the rough ride. But I have not heard a single complaint on the comfort of Koni shocks. Koni may be more expensive and much more work to install, but they are better matched to the M3. Lowell Seaton '95 M3 Dallas, TX

#8. Dust Boot Won't stay seated on Front Brake - from Noah Paci

Date: Thu, 8 Aug 2002 10:02:45 -0400 From: "Noah Paci" <npaci@rr.com> Subject: Dust Boot Won't stay seated on Front Brake Hey all, I just got back from a weekend at the track, and for the second time the dust boot that goes around the brake piston has come out of the nice little groove. It is beginning to creep up the piston. Is this what I get for using PF97 track pads? I don't brake really hard, or abusively, fairly friendly for track use. Or is this just normal wear resulting in the rubber becoming less compliant? What should I do? Does a brake caliper rebuild help with this? Is this because these are the stock boots from 95? Solutions? Suggestions? Insights? Cheers, Noah Paci 95 M3.

David, Try Shox.com for a benchmark price on Koni or Bilstein shocks. I got a quote from them some time ago, but I have not purchased yet. I would rather pay an extra few bucks and give the business to some of the vendors that participate on this list. The price I got for either Koni or Bilstein was under $580 and within $10 of each other. On the advise of guys like Lowell and first hand experience with both brands, I am certainly going with Koni's for my 97 M3 Sedan. The fact that it's a '95M3 doesn't help in terms of the youthfulness of the rubber seal. You say you're light on the brakes but that's subjective. When you pulled back into the paddock area, can you feel the heat radiating from the front wheels? Were the wheels themselves too hot to touch? You could have melted the seals. I would definitely rebuild the calipers before lots of crap starts accumulating and start scratching the piston. Chester --- Noah Paci <npaci@rr.com> wrote: > What should I do?
