Rich, In my experience 'early chip' is a moniker used by less reputable shops to pimp their own chips. If your sharked M3 had started pinging recently I would suspect either bad or oxygenated gas that is becoming prevalent in metropolitan areas all over the US. If your milage had also recently gone down 5-10%, it is definitely the oxygenated gas. Try filling out 50+ miles outside of your city's limits and see if the car runs better. alex f > > From: Tom Byrum <mycroft@academus.net> > > alex.fadeev@verizon.com wrote: > > (08/09/2002 12:25) > > > >>> I can get the chip to match it. > >> > >> Do yourself a big favor and only order that chip from the suppliers > >> listed on Jim C's page: http://www.bonnevillemotorwerks.com/vendors.html > >> > >> You may find a bunch of other shops, like ERT, selling "early" Conforti > >> chips. > >> Don't bite! Clark" <toclark@cisco.com> Subject: Iowa Chapter Drivers School For anyone interested in another drivers school this year, I got this from the Iowa chapter today. I went to their first school in June and had a GREAT time! The track is brand new and very safe. I would highly recommend this school to any track junkies out there! The Iowa Chapter BMW CCA September Driving School is set for September 21 and 22 at the new Mid-America Motorplex in Pacific Junction (Council Bluffs) Iowa. Registration is $250 before August 15th and $275 after August 15th. Students will received plenty of classroom instruction and track time. Registration includes sweatshirt and two $5 lunch coupons to be used at the track. Registration application can be downloaded from www.bmwia.org

#3. EWS II Box - from sean_murphy@tankhq.com

Date: Fri, 9 Aug 2002 19:32:06 GMT From: sean_murphy@tankhq.com Subject: EWS II Box Steve, Dependa on which box, the one with the big yellow connector or the little black and white connectors? If it's the little black and white box, that normally sits above the kickpanel on the drivers side. It's the amplifier which picks up the key code from the Ingnition cylinder antenna and routes it over to the main EWS II box, which is the box with the yellow connector. The EWS system is BMWs anti-theft system. There was a problem on some cars where the amplifier box would fail causing the car not to start. It happened to me, but I keep my old one in the door pocket, not the glove box. :) spm >Question all- > > I have a small electronic box that was in the glove box when I >bought the car. #4. O2 sensors mixture and performance - from Robert.Eric.Fesler@nsc.com
Top
Date: Fri, 9 Aug 2002 14:27:17 -0700 From: Robert.Eric.Fesler@nsc.com Subject: O2 sensors mixture and performance Has anyone examined how or whether O2 sensor variation or the reference voltage to which they are compared (in the DME) affects performance? It seems to me that fairly small variations in either of these would affect the mixture and accordingly performace. It also seems like extremely simple circuits could be used modify either of these voltages. I do not expect that huge horsepower gains are to be had from here but perhaps a few HP. Comments? Eric Fesler

The O2 sensor is ignored at WOT.

I would appreciate it. So far, we have from Chester that PF90 and PF97 do not have clips? Anyone else have more to add?

#9. Help - Stability problems under braking - Rear control arm bushings? - from AVUSM3@aol.com
Top
Date: Sat, 10 Aug 2002 00:37:25 EDT From: AVUSM3@aol.com Subject: Help - Stability problems under braking - Rear control arm bushings? Gruppe - I have a '95 which has seen 20+ track days. Recently under hard braking I have experienced a strange situation. The steering wheel is turning to the left about 20 degrees, and I can feel the rear of the car rotating to the left (a clockwise yaw when viewed from the top). The problem is not related to the brakes as far as I can tell, since I have new pads and rotors, and the calipers are relatively fresh. The problem is also not alignment related since that was done recently as well. A mechanic has looked at the car and said it could be one of three things - 1) tie-rod ends are worn and need replacing 2) the rubber bushing at the rear of the control arms on the front suspension are shot and need replacing 3) the bushings on my rear trailing arms are shot and need replacing Do any of these potential causes for the braking issues make any sense to you guys? Thanks, John Cloutier

#10. 95 M3...pinging! - from Steve Grigory
Top
Date: Fri, 09 Aug 2002 23:05:23 -0700 From: Steve Grigory <sgrigory@pacbell.net> Subject: 95 M3...pinging! My all stock 95 M3 with 72k miles pings! Most noticable in 2nd gear and in 3rd. The harder you get on it, the more it pings. Even when you are accelerating normally, it pings a bit. Give it say half throttle and ouch! It's getting worse lately. Premium (California gas) helps, but not much. I've run several cans of very good injector cleaner through it, if it helped it wasn't much. A few thousand miles ago I had to get the car smogged and it failed badly. I took it to a shop and they replaced the O2 sensor (the original one was very, very black) and the plugs. The car at that time was pinging in 2nd gear if you drove it hard. It also had a slight misfire at idle. They swapped out the ignition coils in pairs (a pair at a time) to see if the misfire would disappear, it didn't so the original coils were put back on the car. Also, the exhaust tips were pretty damned black. Lately, the misfire has become noticeably worse and the exhaust tips are black again. So, if any of you have had a similar condition and found a cure I'd love to hear about it. Thanks in advance, steve
