#1. While the oil pump subject is on the table... - from ajoseph1981@earthlink.net

Digest-ers: Car in question: Early '94 production '95 M3 If the nut is loose in the oil pump, could this cause the oil pressure to be low? I would assume (and you what happens there!) that the drive gear would be keyed or splined to the pump drive shaft? I am curious to know the ACTUAL oil pressure readings from people that have an oil pressure gauge plumbed in. My concerns stem from this: I recently added a VDO oil pressure gauge and here are the readings I've gotten the last couple of months...at low idle and oil temp ~190 degF the pressure is 10-12psi. At 3K rpm and ~190 degF oil temp the pressure is high 40's to low 50's psi...Funky sender, air trapped in the JTD distribution block I added, something more sinister? Feedback appreciated...supposed to track the car for the first time in Nov., so I have some time to look in to this. Andrew Joseph ajoseph1981@earthlink.net

Depends also on your oil viscocity (sp?...looks wrong right now, but I think I spelled it correctly :)). 10W30 will give different pressures than 15W50. I'm trying to remember now (I have 15W50) and I think I run a bit under 20psi at idle and close to 60 psi at operating pressure. Here is what I experienced with my race car which is powered by a 95 M3 engine. I had seen my oil pressure readings drop slowly both warm and cold and at idle and various rev ranges. They didn't drop much but I watch it very closely. Then they dropped a big chunk overnight and I was scared. Took the car in and it turned out that my oil pressure was a little bit low but not nearly as low as my gauge said, my VDO sender unit was going bad. I decided that I wanted to know what (if anything) was going on and had my shop open it up figuring that it was worth it just to safety wire the oil pump inside. It turned out the oil pump was fine but I had it safety wired but my bottom end bearings were worn a bit and replacing them brought the oil pressure back up to normal from it's slightly lower levels. Had this done last year and couldn't tell a difference in the car other than the readings on the shop gauge and my old sender (even though it's still bad it went up some too with the new bearings). The whole deal didn't even cost all that much. #9. M-3 Engine (was piston rings) - from David Sanchez

Date: Thu, 15 Aug 2002 09:12:57 -0700 From: "David Sanchez" <sanchez918@msn.com> Subject: M-3 Engine (was piston rings) I have decided that because of the cost differential a new M-3 engine is preferable to a used one. I am now waiting for the delivery of this new factory engine. I am not sure whether to use regular oil for a break in period or to stay with synthetic. I had been using Castrol Syntec 5-50. My Technician says that I should use regular oil for break in and then switch. Does anyone have any suggestions? Also, since this is new engine (no miles) are there any suggestions about how I should break it in? David M. Those that waited until the intake was out got one Shark program, as I understand it. Perils of being an early-adopter :-) Jim Bassett 1998 M3/4 1993 325is #44 KP
