I have Red Line 10W40 and I run a bit under 20psi at idle and up to or nearly ~60 psi at operating pressure. I have a VDO gauge and a KMS oil distribution block. Later, Rich

Physically - yeah. Just motor damage to the car - serious motor damage. Serious enough that my mechanic calls me at 9PM last night. Ugh. Complete rebuild. Emotionally & financially - I'm doomed. See, I *enjoy* racing, and even more so, I enjoy being with all my friends at the track. So, just like the drug we joke it is, I'm paying to continue the habit. I can't (right now) imagine NOT racing. This happened on the first few laps of Friday's test day. Drove 500+ miles to get ~4 laps. I guess it could have been worse, the nut could have come off in the middle of the Mojave desert. I have to say, I got a lot of support at the track. Chris Welch of Bullet Performance dropped the oil pan in the garage to verify the loose nut. Nigel Burns was nice enough to let me drive his wickedly-fast BM LTW in a couple of Group 4 HPDE sessions (I did loan him my radiator, however :-)). And I got to visit my Dad a bit - he lives in Vegas. But he didn't get a chance to see me race :-( And of course, Bill Arnold & Tammi Hull. If things go OK, I should be back out in time for the Willow Springs race in Sept. Jim Bassett 1998 M3/4 - could become an HS racer very easily (nonononono! See what I mean?) 1993 325is #44 KP - help (whimperwhimper)

#3. popping out of gear - from Scott McClung

Date: Thu, 15 Aug 2002 10:21:01 -0700 From: Scott McClung <scott.mcclung@ubicom.com> Subject: popping out of gear My '98 M3/4 has done this twice now. At near the top of 2nd gear (manual trans) - say around 6K rpm and at full throttle - it has popped out of gear, or feels like that is what happened. Big clunking sound and the motor free spins right up to the rev limiter. First time was on a windy mountain road, so I thought maybe a bump in the road or something and dismissed it. But it did it again to me today trying to merge onto a freeway around some trucks. Very unnerving to say the least. Not sure if it's a clutch problem or a trans problem or shift linkage problem. Luckily the car is still under warrantee, but since the problem is hardly frequent (only happened twice) and requires full throttle near the top of 2nd gear - it might be difficult to show a dealer service guy the problem.. Any known issues or similar problems people on this list have experienced that could help guide me to a resolution? Thanks, Scott '98 M3/4 5-spd

In my case, it always happens when my foot is on the clutch since I just shifted. I started making sure that my foot was off the clutch right after shifts and the problem went away. -Matt __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Probably not too good for the tranny or engine, either.. Second time I realized I had my hand resting on the shifter. I think this is what happened both times, actually -- just didn't notice the first. I don't make it a habit to rest my hand on the shifter, but it was when I was driving hard, and was preparing to shift into third.. was this the case for you? It certainly makes more sense for it to be the shifter, especially with the weak tranny mounts that our cars have. -Matt __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
