Could you or someone shed more light on the differences between the Pilots and the SO3s? Why are the SO3's not nearly as good? Thanks! I have 245/40 17 SO3s on the back of my '99 with the stock 10-spokes and a TCK Streetline suspension (H&R OEs and Koni SAs) ... no rubbing that I am aware of, and no comments from any mechanics suggesting the possibility ... it might be close though, because when I first put the new tires on there was a definite burning rubber smell from the rears when I pulled into the garage for the first month ... PS > wouldn't buy these tires again - not nearly as good as the original Pilots!! Regards, Doug

I think Doug was comparing the S03s to the MXX3s (correct me if I'm wrong). The MXX3s are known for the great turn in and control. They do, however, perform poorly in the rain...well, just not as good. How do the S03s compare to the Pilot Sports? I think the S03s are better. #3. Rubbing issues with 245/40R17 S03s?? - from Dorffer, Rich

I had really high hopes for the S03s when they first came out but I have my doubts as to it being the best high performance tire available. A guy I know that works for Bridgestone/Firestone and tests tires regularly raves about them and their far superior wet handling (along with very good dry handling) compared to any other high performance sport tire throughout the tread life due to the compound and not just the channeling. Care to elaborate further on your likes/dislikes with the S03s? Compared to what others? etc. Any others care to chime in as to their experiences with the S03s versus the competition now that they have been out for a while? I have heard others also say they liked the Pilot Sports better too. Best regards, Rich

I tend to forget that I am one of those 'bigger' guys that will manhandle nuts at times. That doesn't mean I don't use PB Blaster, cheater bars, and impact wrenches at times when convenient, but I am usually able to get stuck and/or over-tightened nuts loose fairly easily. Another thing that comes into play on a stuck and/or over-tightened nut is the assurance that it is supposed to come loose which only comes from experience. You know what I am talking about when you go to loosen something and you wonder if the threads could possibly be different or something else may be impeding progress. Regards, Rich - wishes he lost a few pounds off my 225 lb frame but comes in handy to break free stuck nuts :-)

I'll chime in, since I've run all 3 tires on the M3 (OE MXX3, Pilot Sports, currently SO-3s). The MXX3 were fabulous; great turn-in response, excellent dry grip, no bad in the wet but then we're talking mild CA rain :-) Next was the Pilot Sports. Not *quite* the crispness of the MXX3, but more than sufficient for street use, excellent dry AND wet grip. Top-notch tire, IMO. (Interlude with AVS Sports, which, frankly SUCKED. Noisy, fairly decent dry grip, but downright scary in the wet. Glad I had the "ugly wheel" incident and the opportunity to replace them. Blech.) Current SO-3s. Gave 'em try as they were new at the time, and I got a deal (see above). In all respects, very similar to the Pilot Sports. Maybe a *tad* less crisp at turn-in, but other than that, another top-notch tire, IMO. Except for the OE MXX3s, none of these tires saw the track. My impressions are based solely on day-to-day street driving, mainly CA freeway (with their requisite on- and off-ramps :)). Each was on the car through dry & wet conditions. I managed 40K miles on the Pilot Sports (100-mile RT freeway driving, judicious rotating & flipping), and appear to be getting similar wear on the SO-3s (23K on them so far, a bit over 1/2 worn from what I can tell). All things being equal, I'd probably go with the Pilot Sports next time - I rate them #1A and the SO-3s #1B. Cheers, Jim Bassett 1998 M3/4 1993 325is #44 KP - also seems to like Michelin's (Pilot Sport Cups)

Being of "slight build", I need to find ways to add torque to fasteners. That's why I couldn't have been happier when I found I could access the caliper bracket bolts with a stubby 16mm socket and the impact gun. No more awkward straining on a breaker bar :-) And as mentioned previously, getting the whole front-end up on stands, and turning the steering wheel for greater access helps as well. >Rich - wishes he lost a few pounds off my 225 lb frame but comes in handy >to break free stuck nuts :-) Jim - classic 133lb weakling :-)

I was just about to buy some s03s for my stock 99 with countours because everybody raves about their grip. Now I'm hearing they don't fit? Let's hear some more about this, because I'll be right upset if I drop $600 on tires, to find they rub my fenders... Let's hear it listers.... Just curious to know the mileage anybody in our gruppe replaced his/hers. My car still runs great and passes CA. emissions without fanfare. Would anyone suggest replacing the O2 sensor at this stage maybe for improvements in gas mileage and drivability or should I follow the old adage "if it ain't broke, don't touch it"? Thanks! I may have missed something, but I haven't seen ANYONE say they don't fit on stock wheels on a car with stock suspension. Chester said he had seem rubbing first hand, but I wasn't clear on what car. My WAG is that it was NOT stock in some aspect <g>. Jim Bassett

I thought I could rely on bodyweight and measly strength to get those suckers off. I was working with about 5-inches of "torque space" and the car was about to fall off the stands which is why I got frustrated and stopped. Later in the afternoon, after the penetrating oil had worked it's way through and I had turned the wheels to make more room to work, the bolts came off within a few seconds. It was sweet, sweet relief! ;) > >>Rich - wishes he lost a few pounds off my 225 lb frame but comes in handy >>to break free stuck nuts :-) > >Jim - classic 133lb weakling :-) > Jonathan - glad to see that his 200 lbs of self turned out to be useful after using his 5 lbs of grey matter and great advice from the list. _________________________________________________________________ MSN Photos is the easiest way to share and print your photos: http://photos.msn.com/support/worldwide.aspx
