Compared to what others? etc. Any others care to >chime in as to their experiences with the S03s versus the competition now that they have been out for a while? Rich, I drove a students car (Supra Twin Turbo with a bunch o' go fast goodies) at Roebling last weekend. A friend was sharing my car that weekend and was instructing and I was asked to instruct (I was just going to do the race) since three instructors did not show. I was hesitant to do so since I have never taken a students car out before, and have never driven a Supra. Anyway, the thing had new S03's on it and I was mightily impressed with these tires. They give up very little to some R-compound tires that I have driven (A032's come to mind). They gripped very well, did not get as greasy at the end of a VERY hot session, and gave plenty of feedback before they let go. I have changed my mind about buying Pilot Sports as replacement tires for the M3 based on my drive with the S03's. Oh, and as an aside, in this car with street tires I was able to get over 140 mph on the front straight at Roebling, and that was taking it easy since I didn't want to push the car too hard. In the M3, with R compounds, the fastest I ever got was 125. Quite a ride. I asked the guy if he wanted me to go in after a couple of laps (didn't want to burn up his tires/brakes/gas), and he said 'no' it was like riding a roller coaster! No doubt!! Shane K. While cleaning out my garage imagine my surprise when I found I had one more used MXX3 in there. It's pretty worn, maybe has 2-3,000 pampered miles left, the wear bars are about half-worn-through. Good for a spare, a track tire, etc. It's free to the first person to pick it up -- i'm in San Francisco. Contact me by email. Regards, -- ______________________________________ Andrew E. I will comment on the price difference though. With the S03s running $179 and the RE730 running $156 (245/40-17 for both), I wouldn't consider the RE730s to be "far cheaper." You would save just over $90 on all four, however, and I'm willing to bet that they certainly may last a bit longer. The fronts were cupped by about 8k miles. Tire Rack "generously" offered to let me send them back (at my expense) for a pro-rated credit on another set of Bridgestone tires. No thanks. They did work pretty well when new, though. I probably paid about $125/tire for those. The new ones had better be a lot better for the extra $100 a set. BTW, I replaced mine with the AVS Intermediates. I know they suck but for $65 a tire they are great. -Matt --- twisty M3 <twistym3@hotmail.com> wrote: > > >From: "Jason Sarich" <sarich_m3@prontomail.com> > > > >(RE: RE730 vs. S03) > > > > The grip is fantastic in the dry/rain > >and they tires are far cheaper than the SO3's. > > > > I can't comment on the performance of the RE730, as > I've never tried them. > I will comment on the price difference though. #9. considering selling my track-rat vette.... - from Scott McClung
Top
Date: Fri, 23 Aug 2002 10:22:06 -0700 From: Scott McClung <scott.mcclung@ubicom.com> Subject: considering selling my track-rat vette.... I realize this may be the wrong list to ask this question, but I'm going to anyway.... I've been very swamped in my life recently between work, family and other interests (primarily cycling) and unable to enjoy my '91 Corvette much at the track. I think I've hit 2 events this year and will be lucky to make 4 events this year. The car is becoming almost dedicated to track-duty since I have little time or use for it otherwise. Part of this may come from the latest addition to my stable, a '98 M3 sedan. The car is such an awesome street car that I've had zero desire to bring out the old vette all summer long!! The one time I did drive it I was sorely disappointed about how lumbering and vague it felt compared to my M3, and felt slower in almost all situations expect maybe 0-20mph off the line. So with the small amount of use the Vette is getting, I'm starting to really question why it should remain in the stable. My rationale is that my daily driver M3 would make a perfectly adequate track toy for those 4-5 events I'm able to get to in a year. I even have a second set of wheels ready for race rubber to save the street tires. My concern, of course is track driving is very hard on a car. I'm not so worried about mechanical wear, the M3 is pretty bullet-proof and built for that kind of abuse, plus I don't mind replacing wear items at an accelerated rate as needed since I generally do that type of work myself. I'm more concerned about nicks in the paint, chips in the windows, misc damage from off-track excursions, etc. etc. I would have to drive it a bit more carefully than I do the vette to limit those type of things as much as I can. Now, this car is not meant to be a pristine drive only on sunny days car for me - it's my daily driver and will get duty in all types of weather, so it won't stay perfect all that long anyway. But it sure is nice to have a car you can leave prepped for the track and not worry so much about scuffing up or breaking stuff while running. I'd really like to have a track-only car that I can run in a competitive series, but my time and priorities do not match up well with that idea currently. Any thoughts from those who have been on both ends of running a dual purpose E36 M3 or a dedicated track-rat would be helpful as I consider my options. Scott '91 Corvette - street legal track rat '98 M3 - daily driver '94 Q45t - spare driver, shared between my wife and I '01 Suburban - tow rig, ski rig, camping rig, kid hauler, wife's main driver

I've spent a fair amount of time contemplating how to get the mrs. out of racing her Camaro track vehicle and into a bmw track vehicle, so I can preserve the m3 and still do an occasional event. With these minimal qualifications, I would suggest selling the vette (which looks to be able to command around $10-15k) and filling that gap in the stable with a dedicated track car that someone else has already put the big bucks into to get it that way. Less out of pocket, and the nice car stays nice.
