In my opinion, an E36 M3 is an absolutely great multi-purpose street/track car. I'm toying with the idea of getting a 93-94 325 for a dedicated track car. But I think the M3 may have spoiled me. For now, I'm using the M3 as a daily driver and a "driver's school" car. I won't drive it on the edge or do any wheel to wheel racing with it. If I decide that I want to invest the time to competitive racing, then I'll go the 325 track car route. Of course, in a few years, the E36 M3 might be old enough to turn into a dedicated track car! I am posting here as I know several folks have race cars or "M3's" that used to be something else like my 330 race car that was a 1992 318is. If you do or know of someone who does in the Northeast area (we are in Boston) please let me know off list at dave@spragg.com. Thanks! You can't accurately compare R-Compounds to RE730's (I appologize). I think my skill set is above average on the track, but I am sure that If I was racing myself in the same car with R-Compounds, I would think differently. I have never driven on Stickies. I wanted to get to the A-group without modification. I don't have a super-charger (sorry to disappoint), but I DO keep up with the group. I guess I should try a set of R-Compounds and see how crappy the RE730's really are. -Jason ----- Original Message ----- From: "Robert Chay" <rchay@mindspring.com> I was thinking either that or he's one hell of a driver. -Bobby ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dave Kelley" <d.kelley@usa.net> > > > Now, I am > > a spirited driver on the street, and take the > > car on the track with the RE730's. #8. bump stops - from Gcfuller@aol.com
Top
Date: Fri, 23 Aug 2002 17:01:52 EDT From: Gcfuller@aol.com Subject: bump stops People- I bought a SLIGHTLY used set of H&R's and bilsteins for my '98. From carefully reading this list is the past couple years I know that I MUST trim the bump-stops in the front struts. But that's the problem - I've got the whole yellow strut with the shock inside it - not inserts for the stock housings. So, after scratching my head for awhile trying to find, or find a way to get to the bump stops, I'm kind of lost. I hope this isn't a dumb question, but could someone give me some guidance on how to proceed? Thanks in advance- Greg '98M3/4 - St. Louis Lots 'o stuff

Date: Fri, 23 Aug 2002 17:30:54 EDT From: LoweSeaton@aol.com Subject: Re: [E36M3] bump stops Greg, Sure. Turn your Bilsteins upside down. See the nut on the bottom? There should be a slotted bolt in the nut. Unscrew the nut (counter-clockwise) no more than 2 turns. I think it is a 17 mm nut. Now the hard part. Spray liberal amount of penetrating oil on the shaft. Then get a really big screwdriver and turn the slotted bolt clockwise into the strut housing. You may not have enough leverage and strength to turn the shaft. I ended up buying a socket screwdriver bit for my ratchet to get enough leverage. But whatever you do, bear down on the screwdriver with all your weight. You don't want to mangle the threads/end of the shaft. That is why you want to leave the nut on until you have the shaft broke loose. It helps to hold the screwdriver bit in place. I was able to get one of the bolts broke loose with my ratchet and bit. The other one wouldn't budge. Ultimately I put the socket bit in my impact wrench and broke it loose that way. Risky but at that point the Bilsteins' were going into the garbage if I couldn't do something to fix the &*%$# pogo stick ride. Trust me. You definitely want to shorten or remove the bumpstops on Bilsteins' front struts. I totally removed the bumpstops. I haven't had a problem with bottoming out. If you bottom out a Bilstein shock, you have got way bigger problems to worry about. Any impact capable of fully compression a Bilstein would destroy the car. They are ridiculously stiff. Good luck!
