#1. Euro HFM and Injectors - from Paul Elliott

Date: Wed, 28 Aug 2002 23:34:29 -0400 From: "Paul Elliott" <elliott.paul@worldnet.att.net> Subject: Euro HFM and Injectors Hi Matt, >>At the Torque peak the injector on time per spray is at the maximum, but there is a lot of time for that spray (since the RPMs are lower) so the duty cycle is still less than at the HP peak....The operating point where maximum duty cycle is achieved is near the power peak (exactly at the power peak if the AFR is constant). << So, in the final analysis, where are you most likely to find that an overused injector is at its 100% duty cycle: at Torque peak, or at HP peak? Here's another, somewhat related question..In a Supercharged engine, detonation is one of the key things to look out for...Ive read that detonation is most likely to occur at the engines' Torque peak. If thats true, then why in a Centrifugally supercharged engine, is it so crucial to watch for the proper AFR at Max HP, which just happens to be at the max RPM level? Since a lean engine leads to detonation, this implies that in this case, its the HP peak which is most closely tied to detonation rather than the torque peak, since max hp is made at max rpms? Possible answer: The reason we look at the high rpm levels for a good rich AFR and search here for detonation is because this is where the EGTs are likely to be highest, and high EGTs are usually a sign of a lean engine, and high EGTs can lead to detonation? So, perhaps in a centrifugally supercharged engine, its most important that the upper rpms levels are accompanied by a rich enough mixture, whereas in a turbocharged engine, we look at the Torque peak with the same kind of scrutiny for good rich AFRs? What should I be looking for as I look at this BMW? Is 22,500 a very good price for 55,000 miles? Paul Smith In past, 95M3 - and many other regular BMWs

What other cars besides BMWs do 17 x 8.5 inch wheels with 38 mm offset that come from an E36M3 fit? Perhaps I'm trying to match a car to some spare wheels? Where else might I find this information (is this a question that tirerack could answer?). Thanks, Marc 95 M3 CSL 95 M3 regular

At the HP peak. At the torque peak, the pulse width may be higher but the actual duty cycle will be lower since there's more time per cycle. > > Here's another, somewhat related question..In a > Supercharged engine, > detonation is one of the key things to look out > for...Ive read that > detonation is most likely to occur at the engines' > Torque peak. I think that if you look at the torque curve of a centrifugal blown engine, the torque curve is actually pretty flat. The torque peak is no longer a single point at 4500RPM, but more of a straight line all the way up. So, the point of greatest detonation still occcurs near the torque peak. It makes sense that it would happen at a higher RPM point since the intake charge gets hotter. > > Possible answer: The reason we look at the high rpm > levels for a good rich > AFR and search here for detonation is because this > is where the EGTs are > likely to be highest, and high EGTs are usually a > sign of a lean engine, and > high EGTs can lead to detonation? In all cases you want to have the maximum AFR to ensure that you don't get detonation in all operating conditions. EGTs have more to do with ignition and valve timing than AFR. If the engine starts to detonate then it will retard timing, which will increase the EGT. This may stop the detonation, but you as a user might think that it's getting worse. I suppose that if you had more fuel in the first place then perhaps it wouldn't knock and the timing wouldn't get retarded. There are a lot of variables involved in these things. Richer and more advanced aren't always better. > > Paul Elliott > > > > __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! It is a rather unique offset. Probably only BMW has that exact offset. 38 mm offset is a fairly common aftermarket size and usually works on our M3's. Tirerack might be a good place to start. Good luck, Lowell Seaton '95 M3 BMW CCA #131505

Why? Is this instead of something else, or is Germany a graphite producer? By the time my wheels look bad the whole car needs a wash anyway. Damaged front air dam. Missing damaged lower splash panels (plastic shields under the radiator/front of the engine) accident damage/repairs--readily apparent from looking at engine compartment for front end damage--you'll see new fenders, radiator support, etc, apparent in rear if you take out the truck lining and see welded/repaired quarter panels. Does the under side of the car have any dents indicating the car ran over something big at speed? Does the car have the right tires 225x45x17 fronts and 245x40x17's rear? Are they something good (Michelin Pilot Sports) or are they junk? What's left on them? Any bad camber wear? Has the radiator or water pump ever been replaced? Does the car have the stock suspension? If not, are the mods something that works well/you want. Does it have the HK Harmon Kardon/Alpine (top) stereo option? Does it have a CD changer (mounted in trunk)? Does it have the fold down rear sear? Do all the power windows, locks, seats, sunroof work? Do you want a sunroof? (more headroom without it if you're tall and wearing a helmet) Non-sunroof sedans are rare but they do exist if you need it. Note: a sedan is a taller roof line than a coupe so you start off with more head room.) Good luck. mark. -----Original Message----- From: Paul Smith [mailto:pauls@ontario.com] Sent: Thursday, August 29, 2002 6:34 AM To: E36M3 Subject: [E36M3] 97 M3/4- what to look for when buying Date: Thu, 29 Aug 2002 08:11:22 -0500 From: Paul Smith <pauls@ontario.com> Subject: 97 M3/4- what to look for when buying I have an opportunity to buy a 97 M3 sedan with 5 speed.
