You unbolt the trailing arm (why is it called a trailing arm when it's in fact the front-most piece of the rear suspension? anyway, back on subject...) from the carrier, replace the bushing. Then you put the shims on either side of the trailing arm bushing, and slide the carrier over the whole shebang. > Also, once the shims are in, do they make inspection of the bushing > difficult? Looks like they block any view of bushing tears. They do block visual access, but I'd imagine there's some other way of testing that particular bushing. I'd be curious to know myself. Andrej '97 M3

Its got white plastic over the entire surface, and the cells are under that. The plastic does NOT look like it can be removed. Definitely different than any other battery I ve ever seen. I got it in Apr of 2002. Date: Fri, 6 Sep 2002 11:51:52 -0500 From: Andrej Dolenc <adolenc@erols.com> Subject: More Bushing Blather Gruppe, With the recent slew of messages on the rear trailing arm bushings, it got me to thinking about another bushing that's supposedly a wear item on our cars - the front control arm bushings. What's the verdict on these? Do they wear as fast as the rears? Symptoms of worn control arm bushings? I'd imagine replacing these is a similar PITA as the bushing is gonna have to be pressed out of the control arm, etc etc. At 84k miles (much autocross, not much track) it's getting to be that time when I gotta start thinking about various maintenance like that. Thanks, Andrej '97 M3

#6. Suggestion on To Do List for '96 M3 with 130K? - from Stan.Shaw@Excell.Net

Date: Fri, 6 Sep 2002 12:50:23 -0400 From: <Stan.Shaw@Excell.Net> Subject: Suggestion on To Do List for '96 M3 with 130K? My '96 M3 only has 9 track days on it, and I envision a future (maybe 2003) of club racing (now that it is paid off). Reading about the trailing arm bushings, I wonder what my "to do" list should be considering since the car has 130k miles on it, and last had an Inspection II at about 100k. The car is well maintained with the following notable maintenance and upgrades: .. recently rebuilt the brakes with new stock calipers and rotors. .. TC Kline Trackline suspension in it with new stock upper front strut bearings. .. JTD rear shock mounts. .. Bavarian Autosport rear stress bar .. UUC strut bar .. UUC short shifter kit .. UUC clutch stop .. UUC tranny mount enforcer and (E30) tranny mounts .. JTD front splash pan and brake cooling kit .. BMW X-brace .. UUC sway bars .. Conforti Injector and Cold Air Intake .. Autopower Bolt-in Rollcage (not yet installed) Regards, Stan Shaw Excell.Net Phone: (413) 599-0399 Fax: (413) 599-0421 Stan.Shaw@Excell.Net http://www.excell.net/ "They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety." - Benjamin Franklin

My 97 M3 had severe vibration under braking around 78k miles and it ended up being the original CA bushings. I replaced them with Powerflex bushings and the front end of the car feels great now. I imagine that polyurethane probably doesn't last any longer than stock, but they will be a lot easier to replace next time. - Bob -----Original Message----- From: Andrej Dolenc [mailto:adolenc@erols.com] Sent: Friday, September 06, 2002 8:54 AM To: E36M3 Subject: [E36M3] More Bushing Blather Date: Fri, 6 Sep 2002 11:51:52 -0500 From: Andrej Dolenc <adolenc@erols.com> Subject: More Bushing Blather Gruppe, With the recent slew of messages on the rear trailing arm bushings, it got me to thinking about another bushing that's supposedly a wear item on our cars - the front control arm bushings. It's possible, but the sheets in the 325is came out rather nicely with judicious use of a heat gun and a putty knife. Many of them just needed to be "warm".
