I'd forgotten the MTBE transition effect. (that IS the oxygenator by the way)I had an M5 back then. Immediate 5% drop in mileage. Got the M3 after the MTBE was here so never got to experience it w/out the Canadian chemical additive of mass destruction which is still here courtesy of NAFTA don't get me started. -----Original Message----- From: melsilva@mindspring.com [mailto:melsilva@mindspring.com] Sent: Wednesday, September 11, 2002 3:48 PM To: Dames, Mark Cc: E36M3 Subject: RE: [E36M3] Re: [uuc] E36M3 Service II / what to do? parts? Extra Stuff Deleted: Mark, I see from your email address that you are in Santa Clara County. Being a former resident of Santa Clara and Campbell, I can tell you that the difference in your mileage could have something to do with the Oxygenated Fuel used in the Bay Area as well as the MTBE if it is still in use there. However, I have no MTBE and 93 Octane here in Houston, TX and I still get 18 to 20 avg. mileage. If this is due to my O2 Sensors being junk, I too would like to kow this. My mileage did go up a little when I sharked my '97 which is also a sedan. Most of my driving is highway miles at between 65 to 80 MPH. If I can "clean" the O2's as a cheap insurance, please let me know how to do this (I've never heard of such a thing). Thanks, Mel I'm actually serious here, if someone's getting 28 mpg's I'd like to know why I'm getting shorted the 4 mpg, especially since I commute 250 miles a week. I average about 75-80 mph on the freeway. I've got a sedan. I've got 245's on the front. So assuming Matt is crawling along, with a coupe, 225's, and a tailwind, would that account for 4 mpg??

With experience this becomes a rote process that can be accomplished in an hour or two. There is an SAE1.03 correction factor printed on the charts, or am I mistaking this for something else? Do I need to take all the atmospheric conditions printed on the top of the charts through some hairy formula to get corrected horsepower? >>>>>> Yes, the SAE procedure allows for humidity correction. See the following link for more info: http://wahiduddin.net/calc/calc_hp_dp.htm HOWEVER...most dynojet operators don't measure humidity, so it is implicitly assumed to be zero. Unlike temperature and pressure, humidity data is not accounted for directly by the software (at least this was true in early versions, and I think still is). The operator has to enter humidity manually, which, in my experience, they don't typically do. In temperatures 70 degrees and below, it doesn't matter much to account for it or not. But at temps above 80 it starts to become a big player. You can play around with the above link to see what I mean. That said...the SAE corrections still are based on the atmospheric thermodynamic potential of the air at a certain temp/pressure/humidity. It really does *not* predict how a *specific* motor, like the S50, responds to changes in the air. So, IMO, the "corrected HP" term is a bit of a misnomer. It should be called "normalized HP" as what is shown on the Dynojet HP axis is actually the measured rwhp normalized to the atmospheric potential of the air at the test conditions (and not even that if the humidity was not accounted for!) I commute 30 miles each way, mostly highway with occasional stop and go. The highway miles are about 28 mpg. The drop in the average is pulled down as I add the city miles. I have seen as high as 30 mpg on the highway trips but it easily drops down as I get off the highway. I get about 9 - 11 mpg on the track :-) Later, Rich

No, I wouldn't bother. They're slippery when wet and I have heard that the rubber inserts wear out pretty quickly, though I don't have first hand experience there. They do look pretty nice, I will say. Does anyone know State Farm's stance on DE claim pay outs? I looked over my policy carefully and didn't find anything that seemed to bear on the matter, but it looks to me like maybe I don't have the complete policy terms. And I think someone was asking about rotor replacement. One piece of advice: Make sure you've got a BF deadblow hammer, in case the rotor is stuck on the hub. I believe I had the OE rotors on my car. One slipped off the instant I undid the little keeper screw, and was pretty heavily greased behind the hat; the other was frozen on like I could not believe, without a hint of grease. Different sides of the assembly line get different treatment, I guess.. I had to wail on it with a deadblow hammer like a mad man before it finally broke free. No way it was going anywhere without the hammer. Zach

I've never gotten over 24ish. My display is about 1mpg high. On my commute when I lived in virginia plus a little around town stuff, I'd get 24.5 or so. The miles / gallons I put in were right around 23.5. I've seen the exact same trend on long highway trips. I'll see 29mpg on the OBC and get 28 when I do the math myself. I don't generally use the right foot too much on the highway because how fun is going fast in a straight line? :) -matt -- matthew c. mead 97 Dakar M3/4 - sharked, xbraced 97 White GS-R/4 - stock (wife's) 92 Black Miata - dropped, dampened, headed towards SM http://www.goof.com/~mmead/

I drive a pretty consistent 8-9 miles per hour over the limit, unless it's an area I think appears risky with respect to enforcement or I'm in a construction zone, where I generally stick to 4-5 over. -matt -- matthew c. mead 97 Dakar M3/4 - sharked, xbraced 97 White GS-R/4 - stock (wife's) 92 Black Miata - dropped, dampened, headed towards SM http://www.goof.com/~mmead/
