If you had a stronger clutch, you "wouldn't mind abusing it a bit more often." In that case, since you installed a stronger clutch, you feel "hey, it can take the added power/abuse." But you wouldn't just be abusing that high-performance clutch, but everything else in the car. That is the black cloud that modified cars have over them. Nick

I am looking to fit the following wheel/tire combination to my 95 M3 and was wondering how much difficulty I will encounter. The wheel in question is an 18x8 BBS LM with 35mm offset and a 235/40R18 Kumho Ecsta MX (heard some good things about these...open to suggestions in same price range). This tire size should about make my speedometer read the correct speed. Nice of BMW to build this enticement in to the car. 8^) I have the following suspension setup: Koni adjustables with H&R OE sports. Stock spring pads all around. So, has anyone tried this setup? Something simliar? How much rolling and/or pulling of fenders might be in order? Thanks, Andrew Joseph ....hoping to someday know enough to contribute something

I personally think it's up there on the Darwin Award scale. You're not going to feel a gain of 5 hp. The factory put the fan on there for a very good reason. They must've felt it was needed. While the car is moving airflow will cool the radiator adequately. However, when at idle, or stop and go traffic, not having the fan might be a problem. Is 5 hp worth it? The fact that PTG deletes it isn't relevant, they don't get stuck in stop and go traffic! #6. Baby needs a new rack, and paintjob, and... - from Chester Wong

Date: Wed, 18 Sep 2002 20:52:04 -0700 (PDT) From: Chester Wong <chester_p_wong@yahoo.com> Subject: Baby needs a new rack, and paintjob, and... Some say I got Wayne-itis. I might have to agree. On Sept 2nd, my car met the guardrail. Guardrail: 1 M3: 0 =( The car is in the shop right now....a whole lotta damage. What caused it? A multitude of things. I beat the living crap out of the Pilot Sports. The running joke was "I'm gonna get a whole season outta these". That almost came true. Sure, they were still good once you got them up to track temperatures, but the truth is, in the wet, they were downright scary. I've been going back and forth between going with 235/40 or 245/40 S03s...which was the reason I was asking about fitment. I love the answer of "Well, factory spec is 245/40, therefore they must fit!" Not all cross section widths and shoulders are the same, ya know? Plus, I have the movit rear brakes so the adapter plate seems to space the rear wheel out a little. Anyway, it was Labor Day and I had just finished brunch with some friends and we were gonna head into Queens. At the intersection, I had to decide which way to get back to the highway. Hunch said left, but I went right. A few blocks later, I knew I was headed the wrong way, but I knew the next entrance was pretty close so no use in turning around....plus it was the scenic entrance anyway. Merging onto the Belt Parkway not even driving hard. All of a sudden, the rear end starts coming around. I'm staring at the concrete divider between east and west-bound traffic. This does not look good. Both passengers in the car start screaming while I tried to remain calm. Counter-steered and the nose starts to turn back. Whew! No more concrete barrier. But there was just no traction. It was raining/drizzling compounded with almost no rain the whole Summer...I suspect lots of oil lifted out of the cracks. So nose starts pointing to the right now....what? What's this? Whoa...now the rear end comes around the other way. We're in a spin... I'm travelling backwards now and I fixate on the guardrail coming closer and closer to the driver door. The car was not scrubbing off any speed at this time. WHAM! Observations: this car is a tank! One of my passengers had a Mazda a few Winters ago when she ran over a patch of black ice. Car spun and hit a wall...car was totalled. She said that I hit harder and the car didn't look too bad. Go figure. At impact, I actually left the seat for a bit and the top of my head hit the interior trim around the door frame. Ouch. Aside from sore necks for the next 3 days, every one was fine. Now here's the damage: - driver fender - front bumper - front panel - driver door - driver quarter panel - trunklid - rear bumper cover (a hole was actually punched into it) - rear bumper reinforcement - trunk floor - tail piece (the thing above the rear bumper that surrounds the tail lights..oh yeah, those broke too) - driver side wheels (front and rear) - driver rear suspension - driver front suspension probably some other stuff I missed The tie rod actually snapped. The shop tried to replace it today but discovered that the steering rack was also bent. So when you turn the wheel from full left lock towards right, it's nice and smooth and then starts to bind. So it needs a new rack. I figure I might as well replace it with a quicker ratio so if anyone has info on what will fit, I'd be more than happy if you shared :) The only thing that at least bothers me is "it won't be the same" kinda feeling :( Whaddya guys think? Someone talk me out of this feeling. Basically the whole ass will be cut off and rewelded. The shop does great work but still.... Anyway, it is my first car. It is all paid off. It is a ton of fun. I'm going through some serious withdrawal now....driving around the folks' E38, but it's a boat. I miss the wired-into-your-spine feeling of the M3. So there is some sentimental attachment to my M3. If the car was totalled and I got a big check back, I wouldn't even know what to do. The E46M3 is a big chunk of change and I'm not even that sold on it...still think that the E36M3 looks more sexy. Damn...I sound like a E30M3 owner when the E36s came out :) Since so much of the car will be repainted, I thought I might customize the silver a bit. Any ideas? Not too radical as only the external surfaces will be resprayed...door jams, etc will not so it can't be too different. I'm also going to have the car wet sanded.....no more orange peel!! WOO HOO! BTW, kids, you might want to cover your eyes: http://www.geocities.com/chester_p_wong/ouch.jpg Anyway, gotta tell the shop which rack to order so if anyone has info or thoughts in general, I'm all ears. TIA, Chester BTW, definitely replace tires if you are approaching the wear limit or feel that the grip is just not there anymore ===== __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Andrew, At about 65K miles on my 95 M3 the upper hose neck of the radiator broke off dumping my coolant between turn 5 and turn 6 at Laguna Seca at a track day. I have been told that this failure is very common for BMWs. The only solution is a new radiator, I'm told. There was a recall three years ago on the radiator cap. You can check through your dealers computer to see whether your car got the new cap. #10. Enough! Modded cars and selling them - from Mel Silva
Top
Date: Wed, 18 Sep 2002 23:06:58 -0500 From: "Mel Silva" <melsilva@mindspring.com> Subject: Enough! Modded cars and selling them You guys are all dancing around the issue here. There is just as much "neglect" of a perfectly stock (as in non-modified) car as there is "abuse" of modified cars. I, for one, would NEVER buy a modified car from a dealers lot! Why, you ask, when I just wholly condoned the selling of a modified car? Because if you don't know who the PO is, how the mods were done, why they were done, and how the car was taken care of (not neglected), you can't know the damage, if any, that was done. I am, and I think there are several others on this list that are card-carrying anal retentive nuts when it comes to their cars. We want to know everything that was done, how, and when. I had considered several modified M3's when I was looking to buy one. The bottom line came out that any car that was done "the right way" was financially out of reach for me, so I bought a completely stock car. Turns out it had as many problems as any abused car would, due being neglected by the PO. Upon close inspection it appeared that the car had been left to sit in the Dallas sun for much of its previous life and repainted in spots. There are more examples but this message is too long already. My point is that we as a group are unique in that we think of cars as more than mere appliances. However, not everyone that purchases an M3 (or M5 and certainly not your average BMW owner) does so because they feel the way we do. Believe it or not, some treat cars like toasters and just put gas in them and go from here to there with nary a thought about what that creak is in the front suspension, or why the car stumbled at idle for the first time in two years. It never even occurs to them that they should look into something until it becomes drastically obvious like when the damn wheel falls off. I would agree that Paul is trying to make a point that few are ever going to agree with. I would disagree with those of you that say that all modified cars are "beaters" as well. There are some (not all) modified cars that have been pampered and taken care of more regularly and diligently than any non-modified car, but you have to find that card-carrying anal retentite that owns it... I has always looked at it this way: If I decide to drive the snot out of my car then it deserves my time to give it the "creeper tour" and replace anything that I find abnormal. On a car that doesn't get driven hard (like my wife's Trailblazer) it does not deserve or require that sort of attention. The problem arises when someone drives a car hard and puts it away wet (as someone else put it) or you get idiots that buy a (lets keep it generic and say "sports car") for the "status" and have no idea how to take care of it. Okay I'm going to stop, this is becoming a freaking essay. Enough I say. Mel Gary, >>If you present the car properly with documentation a modded car will sell fine<< Ah, gary, bless you.
