I think in Europe a trailer's brake controller is usually in the trailer. Here is the pinout of the BMW E36 trailer connector: 1 - left turn signal 2 - rear fog light 3 - ground 4 - right turn signal 5 - right tail light 6 - brake lights 7 - left tail light 8 - reverse lights 9 - 15A power, always hot (fuse F2 in an E36) 13 - ground Take these with a grain of salt as they were copied from a single ETM. I sure hope the X5's wiring is the same or very similar. Otherwise, somebody's probably going to have trouble towing BMW's own (braked) multi-trailer! -John '96 318is

The turn-on lead (usually white) should have 12v when the system is switched on. If not, the amp won't turn on and no output. I have no experience with the HK systems, but I've read of a special switch that's unique to that system. I think it's some kind of spacial expander or something. Check that out. You could have shorted some of the speaker wires. If so, the amp may be going into protection and shutting down. Again, no output. The stereo schematics are in the Bentley. If you don't have one, go to www.unofficialbmw.com for pin ID info. Good luck - Jay

This was to accommodate the integrated cell-phone feature, so that you could hear the caller without needing to turn off the stereo. I'm not positive about the proper connections to a dual voice coil system, but I'm guessing that it requires a shorting setup if not used by the cell phone. I know there are some audio fanatics on the list that can explain who dual voice coil setups are connected properly. This still does not explain why you get no signal even after disconnecting it though... I swapped the right kick panel speaker and it still functioned fine. Then I swapped the left kick panel speaker and the system produced no sound at all. The head unit lit up and changed stations but the system produced absolutely no sound. WTF!?! What could I have done to cause this? I tired swapping back the kick panel speakers to no avail. All that power and only 5.6 sec 0-100 kmph? What's up with that<< I forget which magazine it was, and i'll try to locate it, but it posted a 4.5 sec 0-60! Most seem to find 4.7-4.8 0-60. Matter of fact, I hit most of the stats, and Ive never seen such a slow time. 5.6 0 - 100 kmph usually loses around .3 when compared to a 0-60 measurement, but even so, a 5.3 sec 0-60 still about a half sec slower than most of the tests have indicated. It may be a pig, but I dont think its THAT big a pig :--) Could it have been a Convertible that was measured? #6. It's a small thing but - from Neil Maller

Date: Fri, 20 Sep 2002 10:20:44 -0500 From: Neil Maller <neil.maller@gte.net> Subject: It's a small thing but A week or two back someone asked about the Strong Strut strut tower brace. I'd never heard of them, but surfed on over to check it out: http://home1.gte.net/azz3man/ Looks like a decent product, but I already own a UUC Strut Barbarian which I'm perfectly happy with. However one thing caught my eye, and that was the strut tower caps shown on: http://home1.gte.net/azz3man/accinst.htm since of course our original M3 caps, which fit over the 3 mounting nuts, don't work once you've installed a brace. So I emailed Strong Strut, and the owner Paul Ebeyer told me that these are, of all things, stock Z8 parts. I looked up the P/N, which is: 31 33 1 096 046 and ordered a pair at my local dealer for under $10. They arrived yesterday and I popped them in. So as I said, it's a small thing, but it does finish off the strut towers nicely, and prevents dirt from dropping into the bearing area. The caps fit inside the raised mounting lip of the bearing hats, and should work with pretty much any open-plate brace: UUC, BMW-Motorsport, Dinan, etc. (All of which begs the question of just why BMW would tool up a special plastic part just for the Z8, but there you have it.) Rich, Yes they do. In fact when I wrote that "The caps fit inside the raised mounting lip of the bearing hats" I should really have said "of the reinforcing plates." I get a kick out of some renewal parts product planner back in Germany wondering why the hell they're selling to many replacement Z8 caps! Strong Strut told me that they buy them 100 at a time. I think I have a local buyer, so I want to provide him with the part number for the new lense. Thanks, Vince __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
