#2. Does Differential Require Grounding for Temp Sensor? - from Andrew E. Kalman

Date: Sun, 22 Sep 2002 15:30:27 -0700 From: "Andrew E. Kalman" <aek@pumpkininc.com> Subject: Does Differential Require Grounding for Temp Sensor? Hi All. Just wondering if those of you with temp sensors in your diffs had to ground the diffs ... The E36M3 diff is suspended by rubber bushings at the diff body. Its axles connect to the rear suspension, which is also wholly suspended by rubber bushings. The diff's input connects to the driveshaft, which has metal-to-metal contact (I presume) in the centering sleeve at the tip of the driveshaft. My diff measures a weak 1-10kOhm to ground, but that's when nothing is in motion. I plan to use a simple VDO single-terminal screw-in temp sensor in a modified drain plug. I'd like to know in advance whether I need to add a ground strap to the diff in order to avoid electrical gremlins down the line ... Thanks, -- ______________________________________ Andrew E. It tells the heater when to come on. It doesn't have a probe sticking out like the OBC temp sensor on the other side. It's round and flat. About the size of a quarter. Jay

I've got a stock unit and a changer (Alpine based, I believe). Willing to go to single play for better sound quality. I tend to listen to 65% radio (around town), 35% CD (Longer drives), so a decent FM tuner is a requirement I want a clean interface (no video game displays, something stockish looking would be nice...ie orange display) I note that Nak makes a basic player for about $190. Any comments on alpine units? No Blaupunkt please... Marc Plante E36 325i, 206k Vienna, VA

It kinda negates the necessity for a cd changer since you can fit 150 songs on one disc. They aren't particularly expensive, (under $300) and several companies make them. That's the way I'd go... -josh --- Marc Plante <marc@plante.com> wrote: > Date: Sat, 21 Sep 2002 09:40:01 -0400 > From: "Marc Plante" <marc@plante.com> > Subject: <E36><Misc>CD headunit recommendations > > OK, I'm pretty sure the outputs of my stock head > unit are going, so I'm > looking for recommendations of a moderate priced CD > player/changer for my > E36. =<($300-350)[note odometer] > > I'm already running an Alpine 4CH amp, ADS 335is and > Stealthboxes. I have a CD-45Za and I love it. The best sound of any deck. But, I've had it replaced twice and repaired once in the 2 years I've owned it. Also, I'm not sure the low priced Naks are available with amber display. The 2 top models were. The "a" in the model number stands for amber display. Alpines are also great decks. To get into one with the amber button display (Alpines have always been green) you need the CDA-7894. Great deck, high power and plays MP3s. But, around $400 IIRC. Eclipse is also a very good choice. Starting at about $220. Great tuner and awesome performance. Very conservative in looks. But, uses a blue light in the middle of the volume knob. Besides Nak, the best sounding on the market. 3 year warranty. Solid. Good luck - Jay

Later I spotted the light to be the > check engine light. Ajay, I don't know when the DME records the lights (older cars had a 30 second 'on' threshold for recording the lights). Just to be on the safe side, I would find a friend with a code reader and have him check for any stored fault codes. FWIW: my car used to momentarily flash check engine lights at me for a long time until it started stalling at the last autoX. The problems was eventually traced to flaky coils that would go berserk once the engine warmed up (the first usual suspect Jim C pointed out without ever seeing the car!). The code reader was of no help. Each time I cleared the DME memory I would get a brand new error code. Each time something different. Drove me nuts until I borrowed a known good DME and a known good set of coils from friends and started swapping stuff out. > I am driving to Indy on wednesday night, > now I am worried. Any suggestions? Thanks. Did the car stumble? Any other signs of trouble? There are a lot of trivial reasons for the check engine light to come on (02 sensor is the most popular). I would not loose sleep over it just yet. alex f
