#2. h&r coilover + rd sways (re)installed - from Zack Steinkamp

Date: Mon, 23 Sep 2002 09:54:58 -0700 (PDT) From: Zack Steinkamp <edsarkiss@yahoo.com> Subject: h&r coilover + rd sways (re)installed group -- just wanted to share my enthusiasm ... last year, i bought my 98 M3 Sedan from my boss (johnr -- maybe some of you remember him). he had H&R coilovers, RD swaybars, Porsche brakes, and a few other goodies on the car. after a few unsuccessful months trying to sell the car, he put the stock suspension back on the car and sold the porsche brakes. during that time, i managed to scrounge up enough dough to buy the car from him. i had driven it a couple of times with all of his go-fast parts on it, and loved it. i thought it was a shame he put all the stock parts back on it -- but you all know how that goes (well, maybe not paul ;-). imagine my suprise when i looked in the trunk when i got home: in it were the H&R coilovers, RD sways, and a bunch of other goodies -- a very nice gift from an excellent boss! well, i didn't have time to install the suspension parts until this weekend (it was the car's 40K mi anniversary). the stock suspension is very nice -- a good balance of sport and comfort. the H&R's take it to the next level of sportiness without too much sacrifice in comfort. it's very firm, but definitely not jarring. i followed the excellent writeup from Scott King here: http://www.bmw-m.net/TechProc/H&R%20COILOVER%20INSTALL%202.0.pdf start to finish, it took 5 hours, mostly working alone. the h&r's were already assembled (with KMAC Camber Plates, nonetheless), so i'm sure that made the job a lot easier. i'm having the dealer check out and possibly replace some rear suspension bushings and power steering hoses tomorrow that my mechanic (A&E Performance) recommended. I have an appointment at Custom Alignment on wednesday. two questions: - will the dealer try to align the car after installing bushings -- i.e. do i need to tell them "don't align it" if i'm going to a real alignment shop the next day? - should i spend the extra $200 to have Custom Alignment do a corner balance? i don't plan on doing any high-speed DEs any time soon -- maybe some SCCA Slush Series autocrosses. thanks! zs

#3. shock wear/failure; replace in pairs? - from Todd C. Merrill

Date: Mon, 23 Sep 2002 13:38:47 -0400 (EDT) From: "Todd C. Merrill" <tmerrill@mathworks.com> Subject: shock wear/failure; replace in pairs? I have what appears to be a leaking rear shock (Dinan/Koni). Is it wise to replace both, so the behavior will be the same, i.e., do they fail in a relatively gradual manner that would dictate replacing them in pairs, or do shocks fail relatively quickly and catastrophically, so replacing one is only what is necessary? Until next time... Todd 1998 BMW M3 coupe, Dinan Stage II BMW CCA member, Boston Chapter ---

#5. [E36M3] Hawk Blue Brake Dust Cleaner? - from Dave Kelley

Date: Mon, 23 Sep 2002 14:25:55 -0400 From: "Dave Kelley" <d.kelley@usa.net> Subject: [E36M3] Hawk Blue Brake Dust Cleaner? Okay, I ran Hawk Blues for the first time at Road Atlanta last weekend. But it rained and I have never seen such a mess! The brake dust turned into a concrete slurry that is baked onto my wheels and it has made a complete mess out of the side of my car too. Yellow/brown rust-like stains everywhere! I know... I was warned. But does anyone have any recommendation for a magic cleaner or methods for getting this stuff off besides a hammer and chisel? Dave, P21S (or any other wheel cleaner) and LOTs of labor grease. Repeat as necessary. The brake dust will come off. Eventually. The job will be easier next time if you wax your wheels after cleaning them. Leave as think layer of wax on them as possible (do not wipe off the white residue). alex f

I don't know specifically about UUC parts, but I know for other parts like that I have purchased from BimmerHaus, and if you are a BMW CCA member, they do give a 10% discount. Plus they are very good to deal with, and very knowlegable. http://www.bimmerhaus.com/w5.html lists the vendors they sell, and UUC is on the list.
