#2. Thanks and a fuel mileage problem - from Birkhead, Rob

Date: Thu, 26 Sep 2002 13:38:56 -0700 From: "Birkhead, Rob" <rbirkhead@bb.directv.com> Subject: Thanks and a fuel mileage problem First off, I wanted to thank everyone that replied to the Laguna Seca sound limit question. It sounds like I will be right on the line and better be prepared to short shift or deflect some exhaust. Second, on my 95 M3 my gas mileage has taken a sudden turn south. I went from around 22-23mpg average to now 17-18mpg. The performance still seems to be the same, I haven't noticed any change there. I am still using the same gas and driving the same commute. Any ideas? The only change I can think of is about 2000mi ago I swapped in a 96+ exhaust center section. To do that I had to weld a new O2 sensor port in and I replaced the sensor. Using this setup the O2 sensor is only reading 1 pipe instead of taking a reading at the "Y" where the 2 pipes joined on the original 95 exhaust. Could this be causing the problem? Why didn't it show up immediately if so? Thanks for all your help! Rob

The 96+ outer bushing is different than the 95 like you thought. The 96+ one is basically a monoball with some dust covers. The 95 is a metal sleeve captured in rubber. When I upgraded to the GC lower control arms, I had the mechanic swap in the later pieces. They seemed to help keep the rear planted a bit more. I know TC Kline recommends this with all the RCAs he sells. Let me know if you want more info. I know for sure that the wheel bearings are larger in the M3 arms (same bearing used in the 8 series). I believe other than that, there are no geometry differences to the M3 rear suspension. The trailing arm bushings are interchangeable between all the different E36 versions. I have the PowerFlex ones, and have noticed no undesirable traits in the 10K miles they have been in. There was one other change that I noticed when browsing the ETK. It seems that on 96+ M3's, the lower outer control arm bushing is something that is called a "ball joint". All the E36's use the same ball joint in the upper position, but the 96+ uses this part in the lower position as well. The lower position on the other E36's and the 95 M3 is called a "rubber mounting". I wonder if the ball joint would fit in the lower position of the regular E36 trailing arm? I wonder if it would even be worth trying? Maybe someone (James Clay?) has some experience with these and could lend us some advice. The ETK is so fun to play with :-) Butch 94 325is with M3 suspension (mostly) http://www.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=3476 -------------------- Original message -------------------- Date: Tue, 24 Sep 2002 11:32:01 -0400 From: Jesse Chamberlain <JChamberlain@mapletree.com> Subject: Difference between 95 M3 rear trailing arms 325i rear trailing arms..? A few months ago I was able to purchase a full rear subframe from a 95 M3...So my question is, what is different between the 325i and M3 trailing arms?...Also, are the GC shims for the rear trailing arm bushings worth it for a street driven car? #5. FS 1995 BMW M3 - Auto - from Jon S.

Date: Fri, 27 Sep 2002 01:03:22 -0500 From: "Jon S." <treehouse@comcast.net> Subject: FS 1995 BMW M3 - Auto Hey all, Here's my shameless plug for one of my cars that must go..... This 1995 M3 is Cosmos Black on Black Leather. It is in very good condition and has 99,000 miles on it. The car has been well cared for under my watch and shows signs of being cared for in the past. It's totally stock and has no modifications or track time. The leather is in very good condition except for normal light wear on the drivers side bolster (no cracks or tears). A can of leather dye will make it look new. The car needs nothing except a passenger airbag; I hit a parking block in a parking lot and dammit if the airbags didn't go off. I have replaced the drivers side, but not the passenger. Here's your chance to own the most sought after E36 M3. I have made arrangements to have the transmission switched to a 5 speed if the buyer desires so. Otherwise you may leave it automatic. I purchased a M5 for my family (new baby) and need to sell this car ASAP! See pics at: http://treehouseracing.com/images/1995M3/index.htm $15,900 or your offer. Delivery available upon request. Hopefully she will soon get through school and get a good job and an M3. :) My little sister has her permit and the birthday is coming up soon. Found a nice looking little 1988 325i with 140k on it for $3400 and would like to get it checked out by a good mechanic down there (I live in Boston). Independent would be best but recs on dealers appreciated too! If you have strong feelings and lots of experience with this particular E30 and what to look for let me know off list at dspragg@attbi.com but I will likely learn lots more from some reading tonight.
