Re the SMGs, Im wondering if anyone else had seen the article in a recent Autoweek.? In it,the article said that, for all you guys who enjoy your shift lever, youd better enjoy it while you can. It quoted a Germain head of Product development, who apparently said that in the near future, SMG will be the ONLY transmission type available in all the M cars. His rationale was that M cars stand for top performance, and the top performing transmission type is the SMG. I have no idea how many current M3s are ordered with SMG, and Im pretty sure more Euro cars are than american. But nevertheless, Im sure Im not the only one who would be terribly disappointed if stick shifts went the way of the dinosaur! Am I so far behind the times that Id be in the minority in my preference for at least making sure a choice of a Stick shift continues to be available?? Paul, I'm with you about wanting a *real* manual transmission. It's a sad day when a manual transmission in a performance car is discontinued. I don't care what is said about SMGs, to me it will always be a glorified automatic. -Steve Paul Elliott wrote: > >Date: Mon, 30 Sep 2002 10:20:36 -0400 >From: "Paul Elliott" <elliott.paul@worldnet.att.net> >Subject: M3 SMG II easter egg? > > > >>>Anyone heard of this? >>> >>> >http://slashdot.org/articles/02/09/29/2232249.shtml?tid=126 << > >Interesting article. #3. High Dollar Down Shift - from DiVincenti, A.J.
Top
Date: Mon, 30 Sep 2002 09:31:06 -0500 From: "DiVincenti, A.J." <ADiVin@lsuhsc.edu> Subject: High Dollar Down Shift Well, it happened to me. I made the high dollar down shift at Sundays autox. It was a fast course and I was looking for third and guess what gear I found - first! As soon as I let the clutch out I knew it. The motor made some bad noises and then died. This was on the last run of the day. On the run before, I hit fifth gear by mistake, so this time I guess I overcompensated. It's just to damn easy for this to happen especially in an interference motor. I have the 320i tranney mounts and the UUC Short Shifter. Now I know why Ferrari had gated shifters. I don't know the extent of the damage yet. At least the block is not punctured. I'm hoping it is just the head and valves. If its just the head, what kind of expense am I looking at for parts? What opportunities to make performance upgrades are there? Are there any gains to be made by working the head? AJ 95 M3 (with a very expensive autox trophy)

#4. Coolant Level Issues - Long - from Brad Ahrens

Date: Mon, 30 Sep 2002 08:13:29 -0700 (PDT) From: Brad Ahrens <txsaggie97@yahoo.com> Subject: Coolant Level Issues - Long Having a Coolant issues and wanted to see if any of you guys could chime in. Not sure if I am just not getting it bled or what. A month+ back or so I replaced the water pump, radiator, changed to al thermostat housing, new thermostat and hoses & belts (bimmerparts package deal) after losing the radiator neck on the Dallas Tollway. I was stopped at the time in traffic and got the car over before getting the temp into the red. The problem I am having is gettting Low Coolant Warnings on the OBC when turning the car off. The coolant gauge stays dead center while driving. If I cool the car a bit and open the rad fill cap the coolant comes back up to a normal level like there is air in the system. I've rebled the system by opening just the bleed cap with the car at operating temp and the heater on. I usually have to rev the car to 2k or so to get fluid out. Then close the bleed when clear fluid is exiting and the revs still up. (Unless my friend doesn't understand what bubble free fluid is...) I ran into this right after install but then had no problems for the last 4 + weeks. Thought I had it licked. I haven't seen any leaks but maybe I was getting drippage into the undertray and then it blew out at highway speeds. I need to get under the car and look around. I don't recall seeing any fluid in the oil and the fluid is good as well but I will check again over lunch. At no point since install has the car gotten hot even in rush hour TX stop and go. What I am missing or doing wrong? Thanks Brad Ahrens Dallas, TX Frustrated M3/4 owner __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? To satisfy my > curiousity, is there a way I can find out just how rare this color I wish I could tell you some numbers, but I literally searched for a well-cared for Avus Blue for over a year (once or twice a week perusing the classifieds and online sites). Only once did I ever spot an Avus Blue with black interior. I believe I even saw one with the tan/Naturel interior (blech IMHO). The Avus Blue is rare enough by itself. Did it cost more than the standard Alpine/Cosmos/Hellrot paint? > Also, where can I find a nice model of an E36 M3, preferably Avus blue? I have a Maisto 1:18 and another 1:24 E36 M3 in race trim, white exterior (sorry, I can't remember the real details on it, shame on me :)). I would have prefered a clean Avus or Estoril Blue myself. Quick Google search yielded link below - the listings at the top are really the Z3, but they do have a E36 M3 in Dakar with the LTW forged wheels further down on the page. You might try searching more for the 'PMA' branded models. http://www.inscale.com/CARS/vintage/crvnbmd8.htm Ivan - '93 SE-R 111k, '95 M3 108k http://ichou.freeshell.org/se-r.html

Maybe I'm doing something wrong then, as even my stock exhaust tips turned colors slightly. Either way, I took Chester's advice and tried "Blue Magic" from my local Pep Boys. It took a bit of rubbing, but now the exhaust looks like it belongs on the car. No more "Bling! Bling!" for me. ;) Looks great now!! If anyone has some metal they need polished up, give this stuff a try. On Thursday I happened to hydroplaned my car into a retaining wall on the Interstate at about 60mph. The passenger side / rear end is toast with the exception of the passenger door. Front wheel sheared off and rear wheel shattered. I know the suspension is toast as well. I am waiting on the adjuster to take a look and weigh out my options. As this is my first wreck and therefore new to this any advice would be helpful. Thanks David '97 M3 Coupe very sick

I think Stephen just never drove hard enough :) My AA gen III tips changed colors a bit after the driver schools. Some elbow grease and metal polish took care of it, though. Remember, tires start off dumb and don't get smarter or dumber as they wear. ;-) Sounds like you hit harder than me. You can fix it if you want. Here's the progress of my baby: http://www.geocities.com/chester_p_wong/almost.jpg I just swapped out the left rear suspension over the weekend. The upper control arm was FUBAR. The spring opening with ovate rather than circular. I replaced the lower one just because it was $50...hahaha. I think my trailing arm (a $500+ part) is fine, though. Imagine watching the guy do this on your car! http://www.geocities.com/chester_p_wong/fire.jpg http://www.geocities.com/chester_p_wong/fire2.jpg =( Chester --- David Morad <Dogdave@msn.com> wrote: > Date: Mon, 30 Sep 2002 11:55:11 -0500 > From: "David Morad" <Dogdave@msn.com> > Subject: Wreck advice needed? > > On Thursday I happened to hydroplaned my car into a retaining wall on the > Interstate at about 60mph. Yep, valves (ask me how I know - or better yet, ask to see the picture :-( ). >If its just the >head, what kind of expense am I looking at for parts? Hmm, I'd have to look at my receipt for parts only, but the total repair bill on my 325is was ~$3000, which included parts, labor and machine shop. Machining was ~$400, and parts included: - Intake & exhaust valves - Valve guides - Retainers (I think) Again, if you want specifics, I can look up the receipt at home. >What opportunities to >make performance upgrades are there? The obvious one is cams (which is what I did). >Are there any gains to be made by >working the head? Hmm, maybe, although I'm not sure. Others may have more insight into this. (Rules didn't allow me to work the head.) Hope that helps, and again, sorry, Jim Bassett 1998 M3/4 1993 325is #44 KP - BTDT, and worse
