Well, last thing I want to add to this thread is just maybe SMG (i.e., BMW engineers) has too much techno stuff attached to it. Case in point, a couple of autox's ago, two SMG's were there. One guy was almost DNF in staging because the SMG computer kept shifting the tranny to neutral! The other guy (in the other SMG M3) yells, "pop the hood and slam it down (to trip a sensor)". See, if the hood is not down tight, the tranny automatically defaults to neutral. Maybe, they should have named this system 'HAL' instead. But still, you know if I drive one and like it...forget what I said ;-)) just my last two cents Bob Gill 97 ///M3 coupe Philly Region SCCA AS Champion 1997 & 2000 BSP Champion 2001

I figure $250. I'd rather not mess with the defroster in a DIY job. 2) Is there a quick way to understand what manufacturer's radio is in the car. I have a spare Alpine changer, and am wondering if it's going to be compatible. #6. M3 SMG the only option? - from Paul Elliott

Date: Tue, 1 Oct 2002 23:22:42 -0400 From: "Paul Elliott" <elliott.paul@worldnet.att.net> Subject: M3 SMG the only option? >>I find the SMG transmission to be a delight to drive. I used to love shifting with gear stick and clutch, but the degree of precision and speed one gets with the SMG transmission obeying your commands can hardly be equaled<< I have a hard time believing that anybody's computer program is going to emulate my shifting style better then my mechanically doing it myself.... But, regardless, the point is, while Im sure the SMG is great, and that there are people which are going to prefer it, it should still be all about choice. If the smg is great, fine, offer it as an option. But, why make it the only shift methodolgy? It just seems crazy to me, to take what has been, admittedly, the single feature which identifies driving freedom, and sportiness in cars most, and in one fell swoop, do away with it, among the clientele most interested in driving freedom and sportiness in cars. Sheer Lunacy, if you ask me. I want something sturdy as this is for a race car and I don't want stuff going through my radiator - factory plastic ain't gonna cut it. And the less fab work I have to do at this point, the better. Thanks in advance. - rob

Date: Tue, 1 Oct 2002 23:55:41 EDT From: Raginglennie@aol.com Subject: forgive me Off topic, I know, but do any of you other M3 owners have wives/girlfriends with Audi A6's? I'm looking for an oil change procedure (namely torque specs for filter and drain plug), and I'm guessing a few of you are probably in the same boat as I am (i.e. the mrs. wanted an automatic, a little more room, a smoother ride, all the luxo goodies and could care less about how it handles at the limit in the carousel at Road America). Am I right? I just don't trust the meatheads at the local oil change places to not strip the threads in my oil pan, etc. Any help here would be appreiciated. And I promise, I won't ever mention that 4-letter "A" word again. Just make sure you get a new copper washer for the drain plug and snug it down with a 17mm wrench. The amount of torque you can put on the wrench while laying on your back is about right. Filter should be hand tightened until you feel resistance, than 1/4 turn more. It'll probably take you longer to get the car up in the air and remove the belly pan than it will to change the oil. -josh (former audi owner edition) --- Raginglennie@aol.com wrote: > Date: Tue, 1 Oct 2002 23:55:41 EDT > From: Raginglennie@aol.com > Subject: forgive me > > Off topic, I know, but do any of you other M3 owners > have wives/girlfriends > with Audi A6's?
